Highly stable product and auto-updates the software
Customer service support depends on money. If you're a white box manufacturer and we're selling thousands of these, you're going to get awesome support, a ten, amazing support. But if you're starting and need only one or two chips, the support is just access to online stuff or whatever's been done. The better support comes with more units bought. Initially, I would probably rate the support a five out of ten. But then we paid more money, and suddenly, it became a ten, awesome. We had people showing up in the office and walking us through it. But there are also different support models. You can work with them directly or with distributors like Avnet or Arrow, who can provide support. And then there's higher level support with the team in Los Angeles who can provide even more support. It just depends on how many units you're going to buy. The more you buy, the more support you get in the queue.

Network security enhancement with sturdy switches despite high costs
The Cisco Ethernet switches are primarily used as regular core switches for networking, distribution, and access levels. We also utilize Cisco Wi-Fi, VPN, and Wi-Fi controllers The Cisco Ethernet switches have improved our network's security, ensuring it is 100% secure by not allowing any…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Easy to integrate with any of the other hardware platforms."
"The good thing about the StrataDNX is that the Broadcom family is very interchangeable, so they work well with different optical transceivers."
"The features that I have found most valuable are the core reliability and the switching group. All the features are very generic switching features with high reliability. That is the main key point I can highlight."
"The solution effectively provides a stable connection for users."
"DNA Center is very interesting in automating the setup and monitoring as with each occurrence it gets easier to troubleshoot and provides an impression about what could be the problem."
"The queue functionality is the solution's most valuable feature, specifically because we are delivering a lot of Layer 2 services. Layer 2 protocol tunnels work well on Cisco switches."
"I like their after-sales support more than anything because it's very good."
"The greatest advantage of Cisco switches is their reliability. For example, we bought some 500 series switches back in 2002 or 2003, and they ran 24/7. I never had an issue for seven years."
"The features that I have found most valuable are that it is easy to use and it has good technical support."
"Multicast is an advanced feature that helps alleviate some of our work challenges."

Cons

"The number of surfaces that can be handled by the chipset could be increased."
"There is room for improvement in the pricing model."
"The price of the solution could be reduced."
"To keep up with the market, the solution should have better evolution and innovation."
"Technical support for integrations with other network products is insufficient and should be improved."
"Cisco Ethernet Switches could improve if they removed the command line interface and replaced it with a better GUI. It is too difficult at the moment, we always need to figure out the commands."
"There is room for improvement in terms of cost."
"There is a need for improvement on the ordering and delivery side for Cisco Ethernet switches."
"The enterprise-level switches should have a simpler deployment. They should make it possible for lower-skilled workers to be able to deploy the product."
"In terms of features, they tick all the boxes as of now. That could be because we tailor the solution around the product. I have not seen anything that pulls me back or is not working well for me. However, there could be better integration with the network monitoring systems. It doesn't mean it is currently not there, but there could be better discoverability with some of the network monitoring systems to be able to have more visibility. When you're setting up a control room, you can have more visibility into what is going on in the network. It has been doing that, but it can do that more."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"The cost of Cisco Ethernet Switches is expensive."
"The pricing is reasonable, and for small business it is acceptable."
"The solution can be comparatively cheaper."
"We get the SMARTnet and one of the switches has that Cisco ONE licensing. It's probably running about $12,000 a year right now."
"This is an expensive solution, but you are paying for stability."
"The equipment might be more expensive, but when you take total ownership of the configuration, maintenance, and analysis, then it's a large benefit. Sometimes customers see only the first cost of the switches and don't look any further. This is a weak point of Cisco."
"Cisco products are not cheap, which is something that can be improved."
"Customers have to pay for some of the L3 switches licenses, which are expensive."

Benefits of Juniper vs Cisco
Both are decent products. I prefer Juniper for the following reasons: 1) Cleaner separation of data plane from control plane. Higher end Cisco devices are better at this but most of the lower end products still seem to be more integrated than I like. 2) The Hierarchical config design means I can…
