We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We now have the capability to recover a virtual machine without relying on the NFS system, but instead are able to use certain features provided by Commvault.""The solution’s user interface for managing the on-prem environment is good.""We switched to Commvault because we were looking to centralize management. This reduced IT administrator time as well as providing stability and reliability for data backups in a single console.""Commvault has support for backing up operating systems and servers.""Commvault's Command Center is one of the best solutions out there. You can rely on Commvault solutions for the most complex and most demanding environments.""There's no impact on the endpoint. It runs in the background and it's something that you install and then forget about.""Complete Data Protection is convenient because you can manage various types of databases, and it's pretty easy to set it up.""It's an enterprise product. It's a stable product. We have good support. Almost all databases are in the scope."

"The solution is scalable and can be fitted for any customer.""The most valuable features of the solution stem from the fact that the product works and helps with restoration areas whenever there is a need to restore something.""The support from IBM is very good.""The solution's stability is high because it is derived from Spectrum Protect.""The most valuable feature is how we can easily power speed up the VM even though the VM resides in remote storage.""We used to use the solution with tapes a few years ago. We've switched to discs, and it has gotten much faster.""This is a multi-platform backup solution where you can take a backup from AIX, Windows, or Linux servers and restore from CD, disk, or tape.""A full-featured data protection solution that is reliable and stable."

Cons
"I need documentation for Azure backups. One expectation that I have is regarding PDF documentation. When I was trying to browse the documentation, I could not locate that.""Sometimes the web page doesn't work. I don't know if it's an outage or if there is maintenance going on in the background. From time to time, Commvault will suddenly stop taking backups for some intervals.""They can always improve the interface design to make it easier. Sometimes, you need to click two or three times to do something. They should look at what tabs are used most and make them more accessible, to cut the time it takes to get to that information.""They need to improve when it comes to large, video file archiving. They're good, but they have not met my expectations as a customer in this area.""The main area for improvement is that we sometimes experience negative effects from their updates. If they had a larger test area for their updates, that would help.""The solution is expensive in comparison to similar solutions.""There could be improvements to the backup failures.""Just to keep it running is time-consuming. There are five people on my team. Commvault was supposed to be one of the less time-consuming solutions, but in reality it takes 60 percent of our time just to keep it running, and that's not even fine-tuning it; that's just to keep it running."

"An area that needs improvement is data validation. We currently use another product that gives us immediate validation, information about when the last backup was, and no risk of corruption happening. TSM in IBM Spectrum is not mature so that you can validate on the spot.""The administration needs to be improved and made simpler to use.""You end up needing to do a lot of troubleshooting to get things to work effectively.""The software's technical support could improve its response time for different time zones.""I would like integration into where the VMware guys can do their own restores.""There could be better integration with Spectrum Protect and Spectrum Protect Plus, it should be one solution.""IBM Spectrum Protect Plus could improve security.""It requires much more automation features."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "If budget allows using the per socket license and not the agent based with per GB counter for Dedup is the way to go."
  • "There is now a subscription based licence option that, depending on your environment, could offer a more efficient method to licence the solution if you are OPEX cost driven rather than CAPEX."
  • "New licensing is easy and affordable."
  • "Licensing could be better explained. Sometimes, it's unclear what features are available in different licensing models."
  • "Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair."
  • "In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually."
  • "The price could perhaps be lower as well."
  • "Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers."

  • "If you need to extend it, it can be extended acting like a normal Spectrum Protect with a long archive."
  • "The price offering from IBM is coming down because it is based on number of VM machines. So, IBM is coming to the market to show the added value of the product."
  • "The licensing model of Spectrum Protect Plus is more efficient and cheaper compared to the original."
  • "In addition to the standard licensing fees, we paid for implementation and training."
  • "Unlike some other solutions, such as Veritas NetBackup where you have to pay for different licenses to use different features, there is a single license that allows you to use all of the features."
  • "Depends on the licensing options that you choose."
  • "The price is lower than that of some competing products."
  • "Clients prefer to buy a perpetual license, but the majority opt for a yearly subscription."
