Hybrid backup strategy has improved recovery orchestration and now supports flexible DR planning
I think improvements could be made in Commvault Cloud. Lately what I have seen is that there are AI capabilities that different data protection organizations are coming up with, which basically revolves around tiering of not frequently accessible data to glacier kind of storage, plus bringing in a high level of compression and deduplication capabilities. All those features I believe are there in other customers and they are bringing in new use cases from the AI perspective which I have not recently seen in Commvault. I have seen that Dell does have such features. We recently pitched a solution to the customers where we talked about data tiering and the other AI use cases, identifying the data by itself and autonomously taking decisions on how to tier the data between the different storage classes that we have. Those kind of capabilities that we have proposed to the customer as far as the partner solutions are concerned. I would like to see AI capabilities in Commvault Cloud. The rest of the features pretty much align with the other enterprise solutions that we have in the market. It is just the AI capability that is being asked by the customers as well as that I see missing with Commvault.

Great backup that's user-friendly and very reliable
The initial setup is very straightforward. It is easy. There are no great difficulties when setting up the solution. Even the configuration is simple. The deployment itself takes only a couple of days. It only takes one person to install it. You do not need a big team. We had an engineer manage it. The product does not require any maintenance.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It runs all the tests and emails us the reports. We take daily, weekly, and monthly snapshots, and I integrate the storage snapshot scripts with the Commvault workflow. The Commvault workflow runs all the scripts and sends us the reports. It also features cloud-side reports and workflows. Commvault has many tools for backing up, restoring, and archiving things, but we use another service for our archives."
"All workloads can be integrated with Commvault. If we use a new technology, Commvault integrates with it. Commvault is a data management solution with support for building the DR side of things. With Commvault we can rapidly back up and restore any application we add to our environment."
"The embedded deduplication engine is really good because we use a Near Line SAS disk as a repository for our backups, and we don't need to pay for another appliance such as a Data Domain or Quantum so that we can have hardware-based deduplication."
"The features I find most helpful in Commvault are its ability to perform incremental backups and significantly reduce backup times for our diverse multi-architecture, multi-environment environment."
"One of the most valuable features is the encryption which helps save you from ransomware. Because the data is already encrypted, it cannot be encrypted again."
"Commvault is an all-in-one product that is very simple and operational for business use."
"The product is user-friendly."
"It provides us a good holistic view of everything that we have backed up so far. It also provides us all the recovery points. If we look at an an object that has been backed up, we can tell how many retention copies it has, how far we can go, and recover any data, if needed."
"I've found flexibility to the most valuable feature. I also like that it's scalable and that the stability is okay."
"I like the fact that it gives you the possibility to set the data out of the customer on-premises site and to have an off-site copy in your Cloud Data Center."
"The deployment is quite simple. Users are generally happy because of the familiarity they have with the features. The solution offers good transparency for the end-user."
"In my opinion, the console or dashboard is the most valuable feature of this solution."
"Cloud Connect's best features are its simplicity, flexibility, and constantly-expanding options."
"This solution works really well and it is simple to deploy."
"The most valuable features of Veeam Cloud Connect are its ease of use and the portal is very useful."
"The most valuable feature is the snapshot capability."

Cons

"I think the one thing that could be improved is the customer experience. The interface should be more user friendly."
"Bare-metal restore needs some work. It's not intuitive and seems to have been an afterthought."
"It is a little more complicated than it really needs to be."
"The solution must provide deception files across the network."
"I would like more communication informing us on what Commvault is doing in the background."
"The most common feedback I get in terms of Commvault is that it can be complex. I always refer my customers back to their own environment. Almost everything that goes into Commvault is a request by a customer. While it can be complex, it can also be very simple. You just need to understand your environment in order to make sure that you really need to turn on that extra feature or thing inside of Commvault. Maybe you don't need those things. It really depends on how simple or complex your environment is, whether you need all of Commvault's features."
"Our customers complain that this is a difficult product to manage."
"The initial setup is rather complex, especially when switching versions."
"The solution should allow for interfacing with other public cloud vendors. They could work to build something around that concept."
"We are now able to work on more security-related tasks with Acronis, as they offer features such as antivirus, DLP, and various cybersecurity options. This is a significant improvement compared to our previous solution with Veeam Cloud Connect, where we were lacking such features. It also allows us to offer a wider range of security options to our customers."
"The solution could improve the stability."
"The dashboard could be more intuitive."
"We need the solution to offer IT storage."
"The bandwidth optimization needs to be improved and have better efficiency so that you send fewer amounts of data from one site to the other."
"There are some issues with the cloud providers for Veeam Cloud Connect that do not support all the features."
"If a customer has a low budget, Veeam may be too expensive."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"There is a bit of cost involved with signing up the entire solution. It's not a cheap solution."
"It is not the cheapest solution. I think the pricing is fair for mid-side customers. It is between all the other options."
"The solution is bundled with hardware licensing. If I want to increase the hardware, I have to buy exactly the same because it's based on the core hardware license. We cannot tell discount because we have an NDA signed with Commvault because of my academic license. The solution is more expensive than NetBackup and Veeam but cheaper than Rubrik."
"The price should be reduced because it is too expensive for our customers."
"Commvault's license fee is per server-based."
"Some of our customers say that Commvault is a very expensive solution, but Commvault has many features that the competitors don't have. It is not a good choice for a small or medium business, but it is a good choice for enterprise businesses."
"The pricing has improved. It is simplified compared to the way that it was a few years ago. It is fairly straightforward and pretty easy to articulate to customers, which is handy."
"Its cost is reasonable, but anybody else can do better benchmarking."
"The price of the solution is reasonable because of our good standing with the vendor."
"We are looking into how we can extend the license of this product."
"I think that this is one of the most cost-effective solutions."
"It's not the cheapest solution on the market but it's reliable, so we find it cost-effective."
"The pricing of Veeam Cloud Connect is good."
"The price of the solution could be cheaper. There are monthly or yearly subscription options available. The annual subscription tends to be cheaper."
"The licensing is MSP-based. It is connected to the portal, and you can deploy it to your end users as well."
"The licensing fee is on a monthly basis."
