Hybrid backup strategy has improved recovery orchestration and now supports flexible DR planning
I think improvements could be made in Commvault Cloud. Lately what I have seen is that there are AI capabilities that different data protection organizations are coming up with, which basically revolves around tiering of not frequently accessible data to glacier kind of storage, plus bringing in a high level of compression and deduplication capabilities. All those features I believe are there in other customers and they are bringing in new use cases from the AI perspective which I have not recently seen in Commvault. I have seen that Dell does have such features. We recently pitched a solution to the customers where we talked about data tiering and the other AI use cases, identifying the data by itself and autonomously taking decisions on how to tier the data between the different storage classes that we have. Those kind of capabilities that we have proposed to the customer as far as the partner solutions are concerned. I would like to see AI capabilities in Commvault Cloud. The rest of the features pretty much align with the other enterprise solutions that we have in the market. It is just the AI capability that is being asked by the customers as well as that I see missing with Commvault.

Great backup that's user-friendly and very reliable
The initial setup is very straightforward. It is easy. There are no great difficulties when setting up the solution. Even the configuration is simple. The deployment itself takes only a couple of days. It only takes one person to install it. You do not need a big team. We had an engineer manage it. The product does not require any maintenance.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We can use it on-premises and in the cloud."
"Commvault is stable, we've never had problems with it, it's always available, and it's doing the job without any issues."
"With the use of the cloud, the solution is easy to learn."
"The solution includes the best compatibility metrics for integration and they are managed by Google support."
"It is easy to use and stable; it delivers what has been promised, and when it says it can do something, it can actually do it, as opposed to some of its competitors."
"What I found most valuable in Commvault Complete Data Protection is its deduplication technique, mainly because the solution has the highest deduplication ratio, giving you higher storage capacity."
"The granularity of the Office 365 Backup & Recovery feature is very good. We've used all of it, recovering data from each of the four systems that we back up with it, and it works very well."
"It is easy to use and stable. It delivers what has been promised. When it says it can do something, it can actually do it, as opposed to some of its competitors."
"The most valuable feature of Veeam Cloud Connect is the server backups, such as the Microsoft Windows server. Additionally, the updates provide useful enterprise functionality."
"One of the most valuable features of Veeam Cloud Connect is it does not require the use of an extremely fast internet connection for it to work. The backup process is automated which is great."
"The solution is extremely stable; we haven't come across any bugs, crashes, or glitches."
"Replication without network changes."
"Cloud Connect's best features are its simplicity, flexibility, and constantly-expanding options."
"It's a stable solution."
"The solution is already far more advanced than our customers require. It offers advanced scripting and automation pre-testing to support the custom library and custom tasks."
"Generally speaking about Veeam, as a vendor, from a technical support perspective, I've really enjoyed the fact that they have a really high response rate."

Cons

"My customers are not satisfied with the tool because there is a little trouble with the throughput of Metallic."
"HyperScale X is not user-friendly. There are many settings that have to be done on your own."
"The initial setup was complicated."
"This solution can be complex and difficult to administer because it supports all of the many platforms, so it would help if they could simplify it."
"They should move the CommServe outside of Windows machines and the database should be distributed among servers. It's still a single point of failure."
"Setup is complex."
"Sometimes the web page doesn't work. I don't know if it's an outage or if there is maintenance going on in the background. From time to time, Commvault will suddenly stop taking backups for some intervals."
"They don't market their products well. They don't do a lot of marketing to enable them to move forward."
"Pricing could be improved and I also think archiving could be improved."
"There are some issues with the cloud providers for Veeam Cloud Connect that do not support all the features."
"We were interested in investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in VMware. VMware right now is one of the biggest solutions in the world, in terms of the IT environment. But for Cloud Connect it's not."
"I think the pricing could be improved and I also think archiving could be improved."
"Doesn't back-up from KVM."
"There are some issues with the cloud providers for Veeam Cloud Connect that do not support all the features."
"The security of encrypted data could be better."
"It would be helpful if the enterprise edition was more complete. It's not as complete as the enterprise plus edition is."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It is cheaper than Veeam."
"Commvault's pricing model and pricing structure were initially confusing, but once we worked more closely with the company, we were able to transition to a subscription license that saved us a lot of money."
"The price is not cheap, but when you compare it to the other products they are all almost the same level in terms of price."
"It is a little too high. I would like to get more of a consumption model or more of a periodic true-up type of model that is more friendly to the ups and downs that you may have in your data instead of locking into multi-year agreements."
"Some of our customers say that Commvault is a very expensive solution, but Commvault has many features that the competitors don't have. It is not a good choice for a small or medium business, but it is a good choice for enterprise businesses."
"Compared with other backup technologies, Commvault is a bit more costly, but we are satisfied with the support, the services, and the features that we get with Commvault."
"You have to pay for the licenses and the hardware you need for the Commvault environment. If you don't have all the hardware, you have to buy it, which can cost a few million. In the end, it's vital to protect our data, so the price isn't an issue."
"The license is paid on an annual basis and the price is reasonable."
"We are looking into how we can extend the license of this product."
"The licensing is MSP-based. It is connected to the portal, and you can deploy it to your end users as well."
"I think that this is one of the most cost-effective solutions."
"The price of the solution could be cheaper. There are monthly or yearly subscription options available. The annual subscription tends to be cheaper."
"The pricing of Veeam Cloud Connect is good."
"It's not the cheapest solution on the market but it's reliable, so we find it cost-effective."
"The price of the solution is reasonable because of our good standing with the vendor."
"The licensing fee is on a monthly basis."
