Hybrid backup strategy has improved recovery orchestration and now supports flexible DR planning
I think improvements could be made in Commvault Cloud. Lately what I have seen is that there are AI capabilities that different data protection organizations are coming up with, which basically revolves around tiering of not frequently accessible data to glacier kind of storage, plus bringing in a high level of compression and deduplication capabilities. All those features I believe are there in other customers and they are bringing in new use cases from the AI perspective which I have not recently seen in Commvault. I have seen that Dell does have such features. We recently pitched a solution to the customers where we talked about data tiering and the other AI use cases, identifying the data by itself and autonomously taking decisions on how to tier the data between the different storage classes that we have. Those kind of capabilities that we have proposed to the customer as far as the partner solutions are concerned. I would like to see AI capabilities in Commvault Cloud. The rest of the features pretty much align with the other enterprise solutions that we have in the market. It is just the AI capability that is being asked by the customers as well as that I see missing with Commvault.

Great backup that's user-friendly and very reliable
The initial setup is very straightforward. It is easy. There are no great difficulties when setting up the solution. Even the configuration is simple. The deployment itself takes only a couple of days. It only takes one person to install it. You do not need a big team. We had an engineer manage it. The product does not require any maintenance.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The data protection itself is very good compared to other products."
"The compression and deduplication are great for optimizing bandwidth and speed. I don't have to worry about it or think about it, and, because it's a SaaS solution, I don't have to worry about the storage size."
"Commvault is very simple to use and it is automated."
"Commvault just doesn't have any weaknesses in their product lineup, so it is the ability to do everything that really sets Commvault apart."
"Over the years, it has actually become cheaper, due to the fact that I've become smarter about how to use it better."
"Metallic has also saved our organization money on infrastructure costs because the price was amazingly affordable, and we didn't have to create an on-prem solution."
"The solution is scalable."
"What I find valuable is restoring the complete server. Restoring files is also valuable, but I like restoring the server because you don't have to rebuild a new one."
"Cloud Connect's best features are its simplicity, flexibility, and constantly-expanding options."
"The solution is extremely stable; we haven't come across any bugs, crashes, or glitches."
"the interface is the most valuable feature and for the client it's security."
"While there are some complexities, Veeam tries to keep the product simple and offers a good knowledge base. It's quite structured, so you can easily take one subject and learn about it simply by reading through the documentation."
"I am happy with their support, they are fast, and their response is very good."
"With Veeam, you get a useable copy when you restore a backup."
"The most valuable quality of Veeam Cloud Connect is its reliability."
"It's a great product because it's great scalability and it scales out from small to big companies perfectly."

Cons

"I think the one thing that could be improved is the customer experience. The interface should be more user friendly."
"Commvault HyperScale X is more expensive for hybrid environments than traditional solutions."
"Could be easier to implement."
"Setup is complex."
"Bare-metal restore needs some work. It's not intuitive and seems to have been an afterthought."
"There is room for improvement in its user interface and web console, called Command Center. They are improving it every year so if they continue in that direction, I think it will be a very reliable console."
"We previously had difficulty with the support being foreign."
"Sometimes, for customers, the setup is difficult compared to Veeam, which we sometimes also sell to much smaller customers."
"The dashboard could be more intuitive."
"We were interested in investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in VMware. VMware right now is one of the biggest solutions in the world, in terms of the IT environment. But for Cloud Connect it's not."
"Pricing could be improved and I also think archiving could be improved."
"The bandwidth optimization needs to be improved and have better efficiency so that you send fewer amounts of data from one site to the other."
"We are now able to work on more security-related tasks with Acronis, as they offer features such as antivirus, DLP, and various cybersecurity options. This is a significant improvement compared to our previous solution with Veeam Cloud Connect, where we were lacking such features. It also allows us to offer a wider range of security options to our customers."
"Basically, a huge amount of storage capacity can be required in certain cases."
"The pricing is much higher than what our clients expect it to be."
"The flexibility results in more administrative GUI. The GUI needs improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"If budget allows using the per socket license and not the agent based with per GB counter for Dedup is the way to go."
"The price is a little bit high."
"The tool is affordable."
"Commvault's license fee is per server-based."
"Commvault is more expensive than Veeam, which is the reason that we are changing to Veeam for cloud environments."
"I looked at this at the beginning of the year and I don't remember what the prices were for all the other services, but I thought that Metallic's was fair. It was also highly rated, which was even more important than cost because I need a reliable, secure, backup method."
"There is now a subscription based licence option that, depending on your environment, could offer a more efficient method to licence the solution if you are OPEX cost driven rather than CAPEX."
"The product is cheap."
"The licensing fee is on a monthly basis."
"The price of the solution could be cheaper. There are monthly or yearly subscription options available. The annual subscription tends to be cheaper."
"It's not the cheapest solution on the market but it's reliable, so we find it cost-effective."
"We are looking into how we can extend the license of this product."
"The pricing of Veeam Cloud Connect is good."
"The price of the solution is reasonable because of our good standing with the vendor."
"The licensing is MSP-based. It is connected to the portal, and you can deploy it to your end users as well."
"I think that this is one of the most cost-effective solutions."
