Hybrid backup strategy has improved recovery orchestration and now supports flexible DR planning
I think improvements could be made in Commvault Cloud. Lately what I have seen is that there are AI capabilities that different data protection organizations are coming up with, which basically revolves around tiering of not frequently accessible data to glacier kind of storage, plus bringing in a high level of compression and deduplication capabilities. All those features I believe are there in other customers and they are bringing in new use cases from the AI perspective which I have not recently seen in Commvault. I have seen that Dell does have such features. We recently pitched a solution to the customers where we talked about data tiering and the other AI use cases, identifying the data by itself and autonomously taking decisions on how to tier the data between the different storage classes that we have. Those kind of capabilities that we have proposed to the customer as far as the partner solutions are concerned. I would like to see AI capabilities in Commvault Cloud. The rest of the features pretty much align with the other enterprise solutions that we have in the market. It is just the AI capability that is being asked by the customers as well as that I see missing with Commvault.

Great backup that's user-friendly and very reliable
The initial setup is very straightforward. It is easy. There are no great difficulties when setting up the solution. Even the configuration is simple. The deployment itself takes only a couple of days. It only takes one person to install it. You do not need a big team. We had an engineer manage it. The product does not require any maintenance.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It is a stable solution."
"Commvault is easy to deploy and easy to understand for any end-user or any new system."
"The 1-Touch recovery feature is helpful for all customers."
"Integration with Active Directory and the Azure platform make it a complete solution."
"We have seen a high return of value, and management is also happy."
"The most valuable feature is the ability to backup over the dedicated Fiber Channel directly from SAN."
"Commvault helps our administrators to minimize the time they spend on the backup tasks and that gives them time for other projects."
"It's a complete software that can protect all the main applications. Perhaps that's the feature I like most. The integration with the NetApp and other apps is also very nice."
"While there are some complexities, Veeam tries to keep the product simple and offers a good knowledge base. It's quite structured, so you can easily take one subject and learn about it simply by reading through the documentation."
"The most valuable feature is the snapshot capability."
"Technical support is perfect, they are very helpful."
"The deployment is quite simple. Users are generally happy because of the familiarity they have with the features. The solution offers good transparency for the end-user."
"The solution is already far more advanced than our customers require and offers advanced scripting and automation pre-testing to support the custom library and custom tasks."
"It's a stable solution."
"The best part about this solution is that it just works."
"A really good feature is backing up the emails of the company."

Cons

"The reporting is complicated and should be simplified in an upcoming release."
"When we started using Commvault, we felt that there were some technical issues with managing it, but we are comfortable enough with managing it now. There were many issues, like index corrupting, when we first started, but all those issues were resolved by the Commvault tech team."
"Sometimes there are people, personnel, that are not that well educated. Sometimes I know more than the person I'm talking to and they are supposed to be helping me with technical problems."
"The product's migration process and stability need improvement."
"It takes a lot of steps to implement backups. We have to do a lot of planning to make the solution work properly. It takes some time to create every policy. It's an easy task, but there are many steps. It's not as easy as using Veeam."
"I would assess the Command Center as a very useful but sometimes difficult tool. It is multipurpose. It has all the features of logging and monitoring, especially for the actual setup. For us, it is easy because we work daily with it, but for customers who only use it once a week, they sometimes have some difficulties. Command Center is not user-friendly for beginners."
"This solution can be complex and difficult to administer because it supports all of the many platforms, so it would help if they could simplify it."
"The initial installation is straightforward and took approximately two days. However, the process could be more simple."
"Some of the features I'd like added to the solution would be coming up in version 12, so the only area for improvement I saw in Veeam Cloud Connect was the need to have more support for object storage."
"We encountered some issues with stability at the beginning."
"The solution should allow for interfacing with other public cloud vendors."
"The biggest thing that Cloud Connect needs is native deduplication."
"The pricing is much higher than what our clients expect it to be."
"The bandwidth optimization needs to be improved and have better efficiency so that you send fewer amounts of data from one site to the other."
"Some of the features I'd like added to the solution would be coming up in version 12, so the only area for improvement I saw in Veeam Cloud Connect was the need to have more support for object storage."
"I would like to see more advanced training courses made available to cover complicated use cases."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The product is very competitive for pricing in some countries because it is possible to set up Commvault hardware with other vendors using its certification."
"In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually."
"Based on the customer's needs, their pricing and model is very confusing sometimes. You need to check with their sales to make sure you are getting the right pricing on whatever you are using. I know that they have simplified a lot regarding the licensing model nowadays, but it is good to always double check and make sure it has everything that you really need."
"Metallic is an affordable solution."
"Its cost is reasonable."
"We have checked some other products, but we are not testing them because price-wise, Commvault is better than the other solutions."
"The solution is bundled with hardware licensing. If I want to increase the hardware, I have to buy exactly the same because it's based on the core hardware license. We cannot tell discount because we have an NDA signed with Commvault because of my academic license. The solution is more expensive than NetBackup and Veeam but cheaper than Rubrik."
"The license is paid on an annual basis and the price is reasonable."
"The price of the solution is reasonable because of our good standing with the vendor."
"The licensing is MSP-based. It is connected to the portal, and you can deploy it to your end users as well."
"We are looking into how we can extend the license of this product."
"The pricing of Veeam Cloud Connect is good."
"It's not the cheapest solution on the market but it's reliable, so we find it cost-effective."
"The licensing fee is on a monthly basis."
"The price of the solution could be cheaper. There are monthly or yearly subscription options available. The annual subscription tends to be cheaper."
"I think that this is one of the most cost-effective solutions."
