Hybrid backup strategy has improved recovery orchestration and now supports flexible DR planning
I think improvements could be made in Commvault Cloud. Lately what I have seen is that there are AI capabilities that different data protection organizations are coming up with, which basically revolves around tiering of not frequently accessible data to glacier kind of storage, plus bringing in a high level of compression and deduplication capabilities. All those features I believe are there in other customers and they are bringing in new use cases from the AI perspective which I have not recently seen in Commvault. I have seen that Dell does have such features. We recently pitched a solution to the customers where we talked about data tiering and the other AI use cases, identifying the data by itself and autonomously taking decisions on how to tier the data between the different storage classes that we have. Those kind of capabilities that we have proposed to the customer as far as the partner solutions are concerned. I would like to see AI capabilities in Commvault Cloud. The rest of the features pretty much align with the other enterprise solutions that we have in the market. It is just the AI capability that is being asked by the customers as well as that I see missing with Commvault.

Great backup that's user-friendly and very reliable
The initial setup is very straightforward. It is easy. There are no great difficulties when setting up the solution. Even the configuration is simple. The deployment itself takes only a couple of days. It only takes one person to install it. You do not need a big team. We had an engineer manage it. The product does not require any maintenance.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It is a scalable solution."
"The fact that the solution is a single platform has enabled our company to accelerate growth."
"Without Commvault, or with another solution based on Windows, I don't think the recovery would have been possible."
"Commvault has helped us to win some customers against our competitors because we have this solution and they don't have anything like it."
"It is easy to use and stable; it delivers what has been promised, and when it says it can do something, it can actually do it, as opposed to some of its competitors."
"Over the years, it has actually become cheaper, due to the fact that I've become smarter about how to use it better."
"The most valuable feature is the ability to backup over the dedicated Fiber Channel directly from SAN."
"Commvault allows us to use one product for almost everything; it's better than the competitors."
"The solution is already far more advanced than our customers require and offers advanced scripting and automation pre-testing to support the custom library and custom tasks."
"The most valuable feature is that it is very elastic. It's adaptable because it's very flexible and modular."
"With Veeam, you get a useable copy when you restore a backup."
"The best part about this solution is that it just works."
"It's a great product because it's great scalability and it scales out from small to big companies perfectly."
"It hasn't given us any issues so far."
"In my opinion, the console or dashboard is the most valuable feature of this solution."
"A really good feature is backing up the emails of the company."

Cons

"Just to keep it running is time-consuming. Commvault was supposed to be one of the less time-consuming solutions, but in reality it takes 60 percent of our time just to keep it running, and that's not even fine-tuning it; that's just to keep it running."
"The interface could be improved because it has two different consoles."
"The most common feedback I get in terms of Commvault is that it can be complex."
"The Java interface is not great. The Command Center interface is far better and it looks nicer, but it doesn't have all the powerful features available in the CommServe/Java console. The place to improve the product is on the management interface level."
"Our customers complain that this is a difficult product to manage."
"There is room for improvement in terms of data security."
"We get an alarm if a lot of files are deleted, for example. That could look like ransomware, even if it is not."
"Commvault is a rich system that might scare somebody the first time they see it because it feels so huge."
"The dashboard could be more intuitive."
"If a customer has a low budget, Veeam may be too expensive."
"Pricing could be improved and I also think archiving could be improved."
"The bandwidth optimization needs to be improved and have better efficiency so that you send fewer amounts of data from one site to the other."
"We were interested in investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in VMware. VMware right now is one of the biggest solutions in the world, in terms of the IT environment. But for Cloud Connect it's not."
"I think Veeam Cloud Connect could be more stable, scalable, and secure. I think better pricing is needed."
"It would be helpful if the enterprise edition was more complete. It's not as complete as the enterprise plus edition is. For instance, in the enterprise version, we can only use one accelerator with the cloud provider. It means if I have my Cloud Connect, I cannot connect another site of mine with another cloud connect and use an accelerator of Veeam. They should change this."
"The solution needs to be more scalable. There should be no reason to set up Veeam Cloud Connect and have 10 servers in order to have a cloud backup. The initial setup could be easier."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price is not cheap, but when you compare it to the other products they are all almost the same level in terms of price."
"The cost of an integrator license is moderate and its features cover most customers."
"Commvault's pricing model and pricing structure were initially confusing, but once we worked more closely with the company, we were able to transition to a subscription license that saved us a lot of money."
"The tool is cost-effective."
"We work with Commvault and a partner on our environment needs according to capacity, licensing, pricing, components, modules, etc. Additional costs depend on your backup needs."
"The solution is licensed based on the number of objects that we're going to back up, and that's a known quantity. As a result, we get predictable costs for our backup requirements."
"In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually."
"I would rate the price of Commvault Cloud seven out of ten with ten being the cheapest."
"The pricing of Veeam Cloud Connect is good."
"The price of the solution is reasonable because of our good standing with the vendor."
"The licensing is MSP-based. It is connected to the portal, and you can deploy it to your end users as well."
"I think that this is one of the most cost-effective solutions."
"The licensing fee is on a monthly basis."
"The price of the solution could be cheaper. There are monthly or yearly subscription options available. The annual subscription tends to be cheaper."
"We are looking into how we can extend the license of this product."
"It's not the cheapest solution on the market but it's reliable, so we find it cost-effective."
