Unified data protection has simplified hybrid backups and has improved ransomware recovery speed
Commvault Cloud's best feature in terms of protection is that it provides data protection and accomplishes its job effectively. It offers a unified approach to backup across all environments, including on-premises, public cloud, and SaaS applications such as M365 and Salesforce. I also use it for virtual machines and databases. The unified protection approach helps my team manage different environments effectively. Before Commvault Cloud, I used a separate VM backup tool to protect the VMware environment. For database backup, I had to use the native tool or backup scripts. For the cloud part, I had to use the native AWS or Azure cloud tools. After moving to Commvault Cloud, a single policy or a set of backup policies is applied across virtual machines, databases, workloads, and cloud workloads. I can protect my environments, which reduces manual configuration errors. Regarding visibility, it provides one dashboard to manage and centralize monitoring of all workloads. It is very easy to track backup success or failure. I can see the SLA compliance and storage usage without needing to jump between tools to check or have visibility of it. Regarding the recovery experience, the recovery time has been reduced drastically by using Commvault Cloud. It has simplified cloud management and provides easier manageability to manage retention policies, encryption policies, and compliance rules. This helps reduce operational workloads. Commvault Cloud has impacted me very positively. It simplifies and unifies data protection across hybrid workloads. Instead of managing multiple backup tools for virtual machines, databases, and SaaS applications, I now have a single platform with consistent policies and centralized visibility. This has really reduced my operational complexity and improved backup reliability. Regarding the cyber resiliency posture, the immutable backups and ransomware recovery workflow give me greater confidence in recovering quicker from potential risks. Commvault Cloud has positively impacted me in several key areas: unified backup management across environments, reduced operational overhead, improved ransomware resiliency, faster recovery times, better visibility for compliance, and easier management of hybrid or cloud workloads.

User-friendly interface, and reasonably priced but the support needs improvement
While the solution is generally satisfactory, we encountered difficulties when attempting to seek assistance for issues we faced. Getting the necessary help proved to be quite challenging. The after-sales service is not ideal for French-speaking customers like us in Quebec. Unfortunately, there is no local support available for us. We are now able to work on more security-related tasks with Acronis, as they offer features such as antivirus, DLP, and various cybersecurity options. This is a significant improvement compared to our previous solution with Veeam Cloud Connect, where we were lacking such features. It also allows us to offer a wider range of security options to our customers.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Before Commvault we had one product for backup, one for replication, and a few consoles, and with Commvault it's just one product and one license that is easy to manage and has saved us about 30 percent in storage while enabling our company to accelerate growth."
"It never fails. Sometimes we miss a backup, but there's always a reason for it, and it's not the fault of Commvault. In the last three years, we've never had to open a ticket with Commvault."
"The initial setup is straightforward."
"The Command Center is provided from the web interface. You can back up the data for everybody, but also you can give everybody the ability to view and restore their data. For example, if a laptop, machine, or environment is owned by X, then X can look in and see the environment and data that he has backed up. He can see everything that he owns and can manage the environment as he wishes. It gives him an excellent view of his environment and infrastructure. Also, if you are a service provider, you can back up data for multiple companies and give everyone an interface for their environment to manage, backup, and restore data. Commvault has done excellent work in this area."
"Among the best features are the BMR (Bare Metal Recovery), Live Sync, and IntelliSnap, which is used for snapshots of hypervisor storage. It's predefined so you only need to enable it and it works. I haven't seen anything like this in other backup tools like Veritas NetBackup or Dell EMC or TSM. We will use snapshotting for all our machines."
"The product is user-friendly."
"The most valuable features of Commvault Cloud include deduplication and compression."
"If we had lost that storage, it would have been a catastrophic loss of scientific data."
"While there are some complexities, Veeam tries to keep the product simple and offers a good knowledge base. It's quite structured, so you can easily take one subject and learn about it simply by reading through the documentation."
"It hasn't given us any issues so far."
"It's a stable solution."
"The most valuable features of Veeam Cloud Connect are its ease of use and the portal is very useful."
"The most valuable feature is that it is very elastic. It's adaptable because it's very flexible and modular."
"The most valuable feature is the snapshot capability."
"With Veeam, you get a useable copy when you restore a backup."
"The best part about this solution is that it just works."

Cons

"Support for this product needs to be improved because I have seen a couple of cases where it is taking more than the required time to solve issues."
"Its competitor, Veeam, includes backup and replication in the same product. I don't know if Commvault has it or not, but they should if they don't."
"When we started using Commvault, we felt that there were some technical issues with managing it, but we are comfortable enough with managing it now. There were many issues, like index corrupting, when we first started, but all those issues were resolved by the Commvault tech team."
"Could be easier to implement."
"Sometimes there are people, personnel, that are not that well educated. Sometimes I know more than the person I'm talking to and they are supposed to be helping me with technical problems."
"Sometimes the web page doesn't work. I don't know if it's an outage or if there is maintenance going on in the background. From time to time, Commvault will suddenly stop taking backups for some intervals."
"The local support could be improved."
"The initial installation is straightforward and took approximately two days. However, the process could be more simple."
"We were interested in investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in VMware. VMware right now is one of the biggest solutions in the world, in terms of the IT environment. But for Cloud Connect it's not. I think they need the cloud version to reach more customers, to enable the cloud version to be used by more people."
"Some of the features I'd like added to the solution would be coming up in version 12, so the only area for improvement I saw in Veeam Cloud Connect was the need to have more support for object storage."
"The solution should allow for interfacing with other public cloud vendors. They could work to build something around that concept."
"We encountered some issues with stability at the beginning."
"The flexibility results in more administrative GUI. The GUI needs improvement."
"Basically, a huge amount of storage capacity can be required in certain cases."
"I think the pricing could be improved and I also think archiving could be improved."
"The bandwidth optimization needs to be improved and have better efficiency so that you send fewer amounts of data from one site to the other."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution is bundled with hardware licensing. If I want to increase the hardware, I have to buy exactly the same because it's based on the core hardware license. We cannot tell discount because we have an NDA signed with Commvault because of my academic license. The solution is more expensive than NetBackup and Veeam but cheaper than Rubrik."
"In India, this is a very expensive product."
"Hands down, Metallic provides us with more predictable costs for our backup requirements. You are getting what you pay for. If they are charging you X amount of dollars at that point, that is what you are going to pay. So far, I have not seen any hidden costs or any kind of gotchas. It is pretty cut-and-dry. They will let you know, "Hey, you are going to use our storage and it will cost you this much. You are going to use your storage, then we are going to charge you this much to backup.""
"The product is cheap."
"Commvault is quite high in terms of pricing and licensing."
"Commvault is more expensive than Veeam, which is the reason that we are changing to Veeam for cloud environments."
"If budget allows using the per socket license and not the agent based with per GB counter for Dedup is the way to go."
"Commvault's license fee is per server-based."
"I think that this is one of the most cost-effective solutions."
"The price of the solution is reasonable because of our good standing with the vendor."
"The pricing of Veeam Cloud Connect is good."
"The price of the solution could be cheaper. There are monthly or yearly subscription options available. The annual subscription tends to be cheaper."
"The licensing is MSP-based. It is connected to the portal, and you can deploy it to your end users as well."
"It's not the cheapest solution on the market but it's reliable, so we find it cost-effective."
"The licensing fee is on a monthly basis."
"We are looking into how we can extend the license of this product."
