Hybrid backup strategy has improved recovery orchestration and now supports flexible DR planning
I think improvements could be made in Commvault Cloud. Lately what I have seen is that there are AI capabilities that different data protection organizations are coming up with, which basically revolves around tiering of not frequently accessible data to glacier kind of storage, plus bringing in a high level of compression and deduplication capabilities. All those features I believe are there in other customers and they are bringing in new use cases from the AI perspective which I have not recently seen in Commvault. I have seen that Dell does have such features. We recently pitched a solution to the customers where we talked about data tiering and the other AI use cases, identifying the data by itself and autonomously taking decisions on how to tier the data between the different storage classes that we have. Those kind of capabilities that we have proposed to the customer as far as the partner solutions are concerned. I would like to see AI capabilities in Commvault Cloud. The rest of the features pretty much align with the other enterprise solutions that we have in the market. It is just the AI capability that is being asked by the customers as well as that I see missing with Commvault.

Great backup that's user-friendly and very reliable
The initial setup is very straightforward. It is easy. There are no great difficulties when setting up the solution. Even the configuration is simple. The deployment itself takes only a couple of days. It only takes one person to install it. You do not need a big team. We had an engineer manage it. The product does not require any maintenance.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Commvault is stable, we've never had problems with it, it's always available, and it's doing the job without any issues."
"The multi-tenancy is the most valuable feature for us because it's the only software that is fully multi-tenant and that has all the features we need to provide to all our tenants. It provides us with advanced features for MySQL and Oracle, among other platforms"
"The user interface is very easy to navigate, the interface itself is very simple, and overall it is doing the job we need it to do while supporting all types of backup systems quite easily."
"Overall, this is a unified solution and it's wonderful."
"The email archiving feature is very smooth and better than others."
"The most valuable part of the solution is that it is fire-and-forget."
"What is most valuable to me are the search features, where you can search through large backup data sets and find what you're looking for. Our data sets are so big that we're over the petabyte mark. To find a specific file for a specific user out of 10,000 users is a challenge... If we can glean from them a general description of where it might be, the search feature comes in very handy to actually locate it and restore it for them."
"Metallic is user-friendly, cost-effective, and the technical support is impressive."
"The most valuable feature of Veeam Cloud Connect is the server backups, such as the Microsoft Windows server. Additionally, the updates provide useful enterprise functionality."
"With Veeam, you get a useable copy when you restore a backup."
"The solution is already far more advanced than our customers require and offers advanced scripting and automation pre-testing to support the custom library and custom tasks."
"In my opinion, the console or dashboard is the most valuable feature of this solution."
"A really good feature is backing up the emails of the company."
"I like the fact that it gives you the possibility to set the data out of the customer on-premises site and to have an off-site copy in your Cloud Data Center."
"The most valuable feature is the snapshot capability."
"I like this solution and recommend it to clients."

Cons

"The product is expensive."
"Suppose I am restoring a particular file. If I want to restore the permissions only from that particular folder, that is not possible. I have to restore all the data for that particular folder. If there was an option to just restore the permissions, that would be better."
"The solution requires constant attention. Commvault is very complex. We are constantly making adjustments and working through hotfixes, updates, and issues."
"They should move the CommServe outside of Windows machines and the database should be distributed among servers. It's still a single point of failure."
"We've run into some issues when attempting to restore very large numbers of files."
"Sometimes there are people, personnel, that are not that well educated. Sometimes I know more than the person I'm talking to and they are supposed to be helping me with technical problems."
"Adding new users who are non-technical can be a little challenging."
"We did a POC with one of our customers who is archiving more than fifty thousand email accounts, all over the world, on a daily basis, and Commvault failed miserably."
"We need the solution to offer IT storage."
"There are some issues with the cloud providers for Veeam Cloud Connect that do not support all the features."
"The flexibility results in more administrative GUI. The GUI needs improvement."
"We were interested in investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in VMware. VMware right now is one of the biggest solutions in the world, in terms of the IT environment. But for Cloud Connect it's not."
"The dashboard could be more intuitive."
"I think the pricing could be improved and I also think archiving could be improved."
"The pricing is much higher than what our clients expect it to be."
"It would be helpful if the enterprise edition was more complete. It's not as complete as the enterprise plus edition is. For instance, in the enterprise version, we can only use one accelerator with the cloud provider. It means if I have my Cloud Connect, I cannot connect another site of mine with another cloud connect and use an accelerator of Veeam. They should change this."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price is a little bit high."
"Commvault's license fee is per server-based."
"The solution is bundled with hardware licensing. If I want to increase the hardware, I have to buy exactly the same because it's based on the core hardware license. We cannot tell discount because we have an NDA signed with Commvault because of my academic license. The solution is more expensive than NetBackup and Veeam but cheaper than Rubrik."
"Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers."
"Commvault is more expensive than Veeam, which is the reason that we are changing to Veeam for cloud environments."
"The pricing is fairly in line with the other products we've compared it with recently. We do spend more on it than we did in our Backup Exec days, but it's fairly competitive with some of the other best-in-class data protection platforms."
"The solution is expensive. The subscription is based on a monthly basis. There are additional costs that vary depending on the size of the backup."
"I looked at this at the beginning of the year and I don't remember what the prices were for all the other services, but I thought that Metallic's was fair. It was also highly rated, which was even more important than cost because I need a reliable, secure, backup method."
"I think that this is one of the most cost-effective solutions."
"The pricing of Veeam Cloud Connect is good."
"It's not the cheapest solution on the market but it's reliable, so we find it cost-effective."
"The licensing fee is on a monthly basis."
"The licensing is MSP-based. It is connected to the portal, and you can deploy it to your end users as well."
"The price of the solution is reasonable because of our good standing with the vendor."
"We are looking into how we can extend the license of this product."
"The price of the solution could be cheaper. There are monthly or yearly subscription options available. The annual subscription tends to be cheaper."
