Hybrid backup strategy has improved recovery orchestration and now supports flexible DR planning
I think improvements could be made in Commvault Cloud. Lately what I have seen is that there are AI capabilities that different data protection organizations are coming up with, which basically revolves around tiering of not frequently accessible data to glacier kind of storage, plus bringing in a high level of compression and deduplication capabilities. All those features I believe are there in other customers and they are bringing in new use cases from the AI perspective which I have not recently seen in Commvault. I have seen that Dell does have such features. We recently pitched a solution to the customers where we talked about data tiering and the other AI use cases, identifying the data by itself and autonomously taking decisions on how to tier the data between the different storage classes that we have. Those kind of capabilities that we have proposed to the customer as far as the partner solutions are concerned. I would like to see AI capabilities in Commvault Cloud. The rest of the features pretty much align with the other enterprise solutions that we have in the market. It is just the AI capability that is being asked by the customers as well as that I see missing with Commvault.

Great backup that's user-friendly and very reliable
The initial setup is very straightforward. It is easy. There are no great difficulties when setting up the solution. Even the configuration is simple. The deployment itself takes only a couple of days. It only takes one person to install it. You do not need a big team. We had an engineer manage it. The product does not require any maintenance.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We evaluated other options, but Commvault is a very complete solution."
"We have seen a high return of value, and management is also happy."
"The data is well-protected. It doesn't age off until it's copied. That's a big feature right there. When you reach the end of your retention, it does not expire until the secondary copy is completed. That allows you to hold onto data that otherwise would have aged off by retention. I like that feature. It's hard to just delete or lose data using the Commvault platform."
"The user interface is very easy to navigate."
"The solution has enabled us to save on infrastructure costs by being able to manage what were disparate data management solutions in one place."
"There are many valuable features of Commvault HyperScale X giving many possibilities to complete jobs, particularly with the backup and restore."
"The beauty of this solution is that it includes two disk libraries therefore backing up to tape will often not be required, unless very long term retention is needed and even then it is likely to be very infrequent."
"We use the solution for cloud and data backup."
"I've found flexibility to the most valuable feature. I also like that it's scalable and that the stability is okay."
"The best part about this solution is that it just works."
"I like this solution and recommend it to clients."
"It's a great product because it's great scalability and it scales out from small to big companies perfectly."
"The administration and management integrate with multiple solutions, not just with one or two environments, even if they're not VMware products, and we've found this to be a valuable feature."
"The most valuable features of Veeam Cloud Connect are its ease of use and the portal is very useful."
"A really good feature is backing up the emails of the company."
"I like the fact that it gives you the possibility to set the data out of the customer on-premises site and to have an off-site copy in your Cloud Data Center."

Cons

"The solution requires improvement with its connection and bandwidth."
"Sometimes, for customers, the setup is difficult compared to Veeam, which we sometimes also sell to much smaller customers."
"I would like to see some of the code execute a little bit better when I add new licenses and assign licenses to users. I'd like to see that information update a little quicker."
"The solution must provide deception files across the network."
"The new HTML5-based management portals are very nice, but do not yet have all of the features of the Java-based client."
"The HTML interface is a remarkable improvement. However, there are still some features that are not available in that interface that are available in the Java console, but I'm sure that will come with time."
"The product is a bit complex."
"The interface could be improved because it has two different consoles."
"There are some issues with the cloud providers for Veeam Cloud Connect that do not support all the features."
"We were interested in investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in VMware. VMware right now is one of the biggest solutions in the world, in terms of the IT environment. But for Cloud Connect it's not. I think they need the cloud version to reach more customers, to enable the cloud version to be used by more people."
"I would like to see more advanced training courses made available to cover complicated use cases."
"The biggest thing that Cloud Connect needs is native deduplication."
"The solution should allow for interfacing with other public cloud vendors. They could work to build something around that concept."
"Pricing could be improved and I also think archiving could be improved."
"The security of encrypted data could be better."
"We encountered some issues with stability at the beginning."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"...the battle came down to pricing, as well as some small features, and Commvault was the best in all the criteria."
"Commvault is quite high in terms of pricing and licensing."
"It would not be affordable for small to medium size organizations."
"It is cheaper than NetBackup, but its price can be lower. If a good solution can be cheaper, it is always an advantage. Its licensing is on a yearly basis."
"Everyone else offers the subscription-based model nowadays, while Commvault Complete Data Protection still has the traditional license model, where you must buy a set of licenses. You pay for one hundred licenses even if you only use fifty virtual machines, so the licensing model needs improvement."
"The product is very competitive for pricing in some countries because it is possible to set up Commvault hardware with other vendors using its certification."
"Using a subscription-based license has been advantageous."
"Hands down, Metallic provides us with more predictable costs for our backup requirements. You are getting what you pay for. If they are charging you X amount of dollars at that point, that is what you are going to pay. So far, I have not seen any hidden costs or any kind of gotchas. It is pretty cut-and-dry. They will let you know, "Hey, you are going to use our storage and it will cost you this much. You are going to use your storage, then we are going to charge you this much to backup.""
"The licensing is MSP-based. It is connected to the portal, and you can deploy it to your end users as well."
"The price of the solution could be cheaper. There are monthly or yearly subscription options available. The annual subscription tends to be cheaper."
"The price of the solution is reasonable because of our good standing with the vendor."
"It's not the cheapest solution on the market but it's reliable, so we find it cost-effective."
"I think that this is one of the most cost-effective solutions."
"The licensing fee is on a monthly basis."
"We are looking into how we can extend the license of this product."
"The pricing of Veeam Cloud Connect is good."
