Hybrid backup strategy has improved recovery orchestration and now supports flexible DR planning
I think improvements could be made in Commvault Cloud. Lately what I have seen is that there are AI capabilities that different data protection organizations are coming up with, which basically revolves around tiering of not frequently accessible data to glacier kind of storage, plus bringing in a high level of compression and deduplication capabilities. All those features I believe are there in other customers and they are bringing in new use cases from the AI perspective which I have not recently seen in Commvault. I have seen that Dell does have such features. We recently pitched a solution to the customers where we talked about data tiering and the other AI use cases, identifying the data by itself and autonomously taking decisions on how to tier the data between the different storage classes that we have. Those kind of capabilities that we have proposed to the customer as far as the partner solutions are concerned. I would like to see AI capabilities in Commvault Cloud. The rest of the features pretty much align with the other enterprise solutions that we have in the market. It is just the AI capability that is being asked by the customers as well as that I see missing with Commvault.

Great backup that's user-friendly and very reliable
The initial setup is very straightforward. It is easy. There are no great difficulties when setting up the solution. Even the configuration is simple. The deployment itself takes only a couple of days. It only takes one person to install it. You do not need a big team. We had an engineer manage it. The product does not require any maintenance.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"One-Pass (Archive) DataBase backup (Online Backup and Granular level restore), VM backup and restore."
"Its compression and deduplication allow us to store more backups and save storage space. The reporting is great; we are able to obtain critical business reports and infrastructure/usage information very easily."
"Several years ago, we encountered some ransomware; we just had to recover the file with Commvault, which was great."
"The convenience of backing up and restoring simultaneously is very valuable."
"HyperScale X is really user-friendly and has a lot of features, and it's also cheaper, faster, and more stable than its competitors."
"We can use it on-premises and in the cloud."
"Metallic is user-friendly, cost-effective, and the technical support is impressive."
"It's the leader in backup and archiving."
"The solution is already far more advanced than our customers require and offers advanced scripting and automation pre-testing to support the custom library and custom tasks."
"For my needs, the solution offers everything I want."
"I like the fact that it gives you the possibility to set the data out of the customer on-premises site and to have an off-site copy in your Cloud Data Center."
"It's a great product because it's great scalability and it scales out from small to big companies perfectly."
"The deployment is quite simple. Users are generally happy because of the familiarity they have with the features. The solution offers good transparency for the end-user."
"Generally speaking about Veeam, as a vendor, from a technical support perspective, I've really enjoyed the fact that they have a really high response rate."
"The best part about this solution is that it just works."
"Replication without network changes."

Cons

"This is not a very high standard product."
"The workflow has room for improvement."
"One issue we face is the complexity of the console. That could be improved on."
"The solution's breadth and depth of cloud support are good, but could be better. Some cloud features that are common-sense, especially on AWS, are not completely integrated yet in the product. They are a work-in-progress."
"Commvault HyperScale X could improve by allowing backups of the storage area network (SAN)."
"The local support could be improved."
"What I need is deeper CLI documentation for both QCommand and SQL queries."
"The HTML interface is a remarkable improvement. However, there are still some features that are not available in that interface that are available in the Java console, but I'm sure that will come with time."
"Basically, a huge amount of storage capacity can be required in certain cases."
"The bandwidth optimization needs to be improved and have better efficiency so that you send fewer amounts of data from one site to the other."
"The security of encrypted data could be better."
"There are some issues with the cloud providers for Veeam Cloud Connect that do not support all the features."
"I think Veeam Cloud Connect could be more stable, scalable, and secure. I think better pricing is needed."
"We need the solution to offer IT storage."
"The solution could improve the stability."
"Some of the features I'd like added to the solution would be coming up in version 12, so the only area for improvement I saw in Veeam Cloud Connect was the need to have more support for object storage."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Commvault's license fee is per server-based."
"It is a bit more than other products, but when you consider the time savings, it is saving money."
"The price is not cheap, but when you compare it to the other products they are all almost the same level in terms of price."
"The pricing is far better than we had in the past. The license for Dell EMC was not too expensive, but the storage, given that Dell EMC is based on data domains, was pretty expensive."
"It was not very popular because of its previous cost, but they have been working on the pricing, and now anyone can afford to use Commvault. They changed the modeling criteria for their pricing. Previously, there was only the capacity modeling based on your content capacity. In this case, they would give you a license and you would have to pay it. Now, most of the environment is virtualized so you can have the best CPU, VMs, etc. You buy whatever you need and pay for what you need."
"The price is a little bit high."
"We have checked some other products, but we are not testing them because price-wise, Commvault is better than the other solutions."
"I would rate the price of Commvault Cloud seven out of ten with ten being the cheapest."
"The price of the solution could be cheaper. There are monthly or yearly subscription options available. The annual subscription tends to be cheaper."
"The licensing is MSP-based. It is connected to the portal, and you can deploy it to your end users as well."
"The price of the solution is reasonable because of our good standing with the vendor."
"The pricing of Veeam Cloud Connect is good."
"I think that this is one of the most cost-effective solutions."
"We are looking into how we can extend the license of this product."
"The licensing fee is on a monthly basis."
"It's not the cheapest solution on the market but it's reliable, so we find it cost-effective."
