Lacks multi-platform support and physical infrastructure but excels in storage optimization
We use it for VM backup and Office 365 backup I find the solution to be user-friendly and easy to manage and deploy. It provides storage for Office 365, which is beneficial, and the deduplication technology is excellent, especially in optimizing storage capacity compared to others. In terms of…

Manageable and comprehensive and integrates robust backup features for core banking
It's adequate for my core banking, however, I am looking for another solution for all systems. It is not compatible with other operating systems like Windows or Linux, and lacks a consolidated dashboard from Browser Spectrum. This is why I am searching for another solution. The product also lacks any centralized graphical user interface (GUI), such as Jarek Pod, and I am limited to using a console-based text user interface, which my local partner handles completely.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"VM backup and the item level recovery are the most valuable features."
"All of the features are fantastic and also the management from Microsoft dealing with multiple machines is great. The whole package is excellent for me."
"The CDP backup feature is very nice, as it allows you to take backups at high frequencies and with application consistency."
"Hornetsecurity Altaro VM Backup's most valuable features include its user-friendly interface and the ability to perform data compression updates, which enhance overall efficiency and effectiveness."
"I find the solution to be user-friendly and easy to manage and deploy."
"It is an excellent product. It is easy to deploy, stable, and fast. Their support is excellent."
"The initial setup was simple and easy. Anyone without prior experience can install, configure, and use it."
"The product has many valuable features for handling backup needs, including replication, live migration, and incremental disaster recovery."
"Its flexibility is valuable. It is a very flexible solution. There are always more ways than one to do something. It is a software solution, which means you can buy your own hardware and expand it whenever you want. You are not boxed in or locked into something you've bought and outgrown. You can always expand it."
"Some of the people in our group, like our DBAs and non-technical people, can restore some stuff themselves via Spectrum Protect. That is how simple it is."
"The tool proves invaluable in scenarios where systems need recovery, such as restoring damaged data."
"by backing up only the changed data, we average around 75TB per night. If we had to do full backups, even occasionally, we would not be able to complete the backup within 12 hours, or we would have to make a large investment to fit a full backup within the 12 hour window."
"It is a very stable product. The cost is similar to that of other enterprise solutions."
"Traditional archiving. One of our revenue streams involves maintaining archives of our customers' data for very long periods of time."
"The amount of data that it protects with very little storage by doing incremental forever is one of its most valuable features."
"One of the main things that I like about IBM is the versioning of the data - meaning that we can have multiple versions of a file or directory of a server."

Cons

"The solution needs multi-platform support as it is currently only available for VMware and Hyper-V. It also lacks support for physical servers and workstations."
"Hornetsecurity Altaro VM Backup could be improved in several areas, such as enhancing scalability features and possibly reducing the price."
"The initial set up was complex, and I was not able to do the set up myself."
"If you look into the performance of a virtual machine and you look to the performance of the physical machine, the correlation between these is totally unclear."
"Stability."
"Basically, how it works is that you have a single local drive, and then you have a cloud backup. It'd be nice if you could rotate the single local backup drive. As of now, you can't."
"Hornetsecurity Altaro VM Backup could be improved in several areas, such as enhancing scalability features and possibly reducing the price."
"Backup speed and comparisons between versions used to be slow on big VMs but that was improved greatly later on."
"They do not have a unified GUI, they only work on CLI and operations center, which is really complicated for the installation and configuration."
"Integration with Windows environments needs improvement. It should be more "assisted", both at the application and database level. It remains a product that fits better in Unix/Linux environments than in Windows environments, given its configuration procedures."
"An area for improvement would be the ease of use - the GUI is not up to the mark compared to other products in the market."
"The administration tools for GI need improvement, as the current assessment suggests shortcomings in the back-end system."
"It could use single store. The ability to mark an archive from my backup for long-term retention."
"I need two separate solutions for virtual and physical systems. I need IBM Spectrum Protect Plus for virtual systems and Spectrum Protect for physical systems and that's a pain. It would be an improvement if they were combined."
"We are still using TSM Manager for many of our projects to administer our platform because the gap was not resolved with the new Operations Center."
"The version that we had when I first started made it look really bad. We are talking about commands that should have run in two seconds, but instead took four to eight hours. Other components were sluggish."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"By implementing the solution at multiple locations, significant cost savings were achieved."
"Its yearly maintenance fee is fairly high for me to renew for upgrades and support."
"Altaro had the best prices and ROI in the whole bunch that we evaluated."
"There is a free version for two VMs. I would advise to study the deployment environment well, prior to committing to order a license per host."
"The price is great for the utility you get and the licensing has never caused any issues with my company."
"No other product offers these features for this price. The ROI is great."
"VMware is a little pricey, but it is a good solution and priced similar to other products."
"The pricing is okay,"
"It is expensive."
"The platform is neither highly priced nor inexpensive. I rate the pricing a seven out of ten."
"IBM Spectrum Protect, cost-wise, has way higher pricing than Veeam. By switching over to Veeam, my company saved over $600,000 in USD. The IBM Spectrum Protect pricing is a two on a scale of one to ten. My company paid additional fees for maintenance, apart from the standard licensing fees."
"We have capacity licensing. We use the front end. The capacity licensing is pretty okay on the licensing price. I used to use the old PVU-based licensing in the early environment, but now we use capacity-based licensing."
"The pricing is a little expensive for our current employer, so they want to move to a cheaper solution."
"The most important feature which I wish to be added involves the GUI, the user interface."
"Use capacity licensing. It's easier and cheaper."
"The licensing fees are on a yearly basis, which for us it is about R400,000 (approximately $27,000 USD)."
