Has a deployment phase that is straightforward but needs improvement in the area of scalability
The main issue with HPE SimpliVity is that you are very attached to VMware or VMware dependencies because the tool works with VMware technology. HPE SimpliVity is an add-on from VMware. Nowadays, my company has a lot of concerns about VMware's licensing policy. Another big concern of the tool is related to security because one has to continuously update patch vulnerabilities that are appearing continuously in VMware's different versions. Actually, the foundation of all the architecture is VMware and that is one of the main issues with the tool. My company is analyzing our virtual infrastructure strategy to see if we can move to Nutanix because maybe it may work better and might have another approach. Nutanix is absolutely independent of VMware. I could add that since HPE SimpliVity is very precisely dependent on VMware, it is not open to containers unlike Nutanix, for example. The aforementioned area is a concern that needs to be resolved by HPE.

Scalable solution with a good technical support team
We use the solution for data backups and ransomware protection The solution is compatible with cloud storage platforms, such as Amazon S3. Also, it efficiently reduces the storage cost for archiving. The solution's training process and online documentation could be more thorough. We have been…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The interface is very good and is very easy to navigate. You can find everything you need from one central place."
"No SAN switches and having a native backup is pretty cool."
"The simple management comes in handy since a standard VMware admin can manage it."
"The initial setup was straightforward."
"The ability to manage the environment without special consoles or interfaces is a plus."
"The pricing of the solution is very good."
"I have saved time and money by moving to the platform."
"The backup feature is valuable, and replication is also valuable. It is very quick and easy to use."
"It is a stable solution."
"I like the fact that we can simultaneously upload the virtual tapes to different cloud providers, and the settings can be adjusted to speed up the upload times even further."
"The most valuable feature of the StarWind Virtual Tape Library is the archiving to the AWS cloud."
"StarWind VTL allowed us to back up to virtual tape that was created within Veeam and upload the tape to the cloud."
"The solution made our backups way more reliable."

Cons

"HPE could give us more options for server models to chose when using the product. Right now, we can only use the DL380."
"If there was anything I would like to see, it would be indexed backups."
"One thing that I would like to see improved is the flexibility of the node expansion."
"They can bring more awareness about this product. In this part of the world or this region, people normally don't know about SimpliVity and its capabilities. The company we have it sold to hasn't been able to fully utilize all the features or understand the features. So, product awareness should be improved."
"The biggest feature, which should be included, is some method to handle archival backup or cloud-based backup. Where SimpliVIty typically falls down with their data structure is: The longer a backup is kept, the more space it ends up inevitably using. When you get into things that you have to keep for five or seven years for legal requirements or regulatory compliance, then you start taking up a lot of space with these old dead backups that you are probably never going to use again. Being able to offload those to a separate platform or cloud storage location would be ideal."
"I do not see the product really working in productivity at the moment with real loads."
"The initial setup is not that easy."
"An area for improvement would be the flexibility of server configuration."
"The main thing that I felt could be improved was having an estimated time of completion for the virtual tape uploads to the cloud."
"I am not sure if this is a limitation of my physical hardware or if it is the software itself. However, I would like the throughput to be faster."
"The initial installation can be complex and should be simplified."
"The solution's training process and online documentation could be more thorough."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"ESXi licensing is a big part of initial investment if you do not already have that covered."
"All-in license, simple and fair."
"The price is one of the biggest problems our customers have."
"The hardware is expensive. For the same price, Cisco can provide more hardware specifications for us."
"The licensing is on a yearly basis. The licensing cost also includes vCenter at a cost in the cloud solution."
"The only thing that I think we are paying for is the VMware licenses, but we are enterprise, so it is not horrible."
"There is not a license required for the solution."
"For the VMware licensing, it is approximately $10,000 a year."
"The initial setup and deployment are also covered in the purchase at no additional cost."
"If you currently have Veeam there is no other solution that is as easy and affordable as StarWind."
"The pricing of the solution could be more flexible to meet the needs of smaller to mid-market size companies."
"The solution is cost-effective."
