Highly stable, simple installation, and helpful support
In our environment, we have a special custom configuration for the Hyper-V switches we use. We have a full-scope VM in our environment and especially for certain Cisco configurations, such as the spam folder in the Hyper-V. It is really difficult to configure from scratch. In this scenario, the…

Scales easily, helps with consolidation, and enables us to clone a VM
Usually, there are separate administration teams that take care of servers, but in our organization, servers are usually looked after by the application owner. However, the application owners cannot reinstall the software, OS, and other things. That only aligns with the role of the HCI administrator. If these rights can be provided, it will be very easy. Previously, it was there, but after certain updates, we found that they have withdrawn those services. For example, you requested a VM, and based on the business use case, I approved it and gave you a bare-metal server. Now you are the owner of that particular VM, so whatever you need, you should be able to do over there, but currently, you have to request me for the installation of the OS that you need, and I have to do it. It is an overhead for the HCI administrator. If that can be offloaded to the VM owners, that will be much easier for us. I have already shared this feedback with Nutanix.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I have found the GUI user-friendly and having the solution be a Windows application makes it familiar to users."
"It's a very manageable product."
"The most valuable features are ease of use, and it gets the job done in a straightforward manner."
"The setup was straightforward and easy for our company. The deployment was fast."
"It is a great advantage for any company that is using a Microsoft Windows server."
"It utilizes the hardware so there are multiple applications running on one hypervisor."
"II prefer customers to use Hyper-V because Hyper-V is mostly integrated with Microsoft solutions."
"Live migration, SMB3."
"Nutanix does a superb job with technical support."
"The most valuable features are simple management and one-click upgrades."
"The flexibility of this system is very good. It's also faster than others, and has skilled technical support who showed more initiative than a competitor, e.g. VMware."
"The HCI environment itself is very intuitive. Everything is centralized under one solution. And, they also have fast server built in in addition to a network analyzer."
"It's easy to use and has a very smooth onboarding process."
"It is 100% stable. It's the most stable infrastructure that we have."
"Simplified management: It provides us more time to work on other tasks."
"The scalability, performance, and licensing model are the most valuable features."

Cons

"The initial setup was complex. It was nearly six years ago, but I remember it was complicated."
"The solution should be compatible with different systems."
"VLAN is not very easy to configure."
"The product can be a bit difficult to use."
"I would love to see other options for connecting VMs to large data storage."
"The backup site could be better. We used to face a lot of issues, and we are looking to solve that now. We are in the process of moving all the infrastructure to the cloud. It could also use more integration on the management part. We also need more integration on the monitoring sites."
"There is a hard limitation of 20 gigs per file with Dropbox, so you've got to overcome that by chunking the zip files into something smaller and manageable."
"The pricing and technical support can be improved."
"While their overall Nutanix Bible is good, they are lacking good descriptions for particular scenarios that might be helpful to many users."
"The file services that they also provide need some more features, like on the Windows file server."
"The product requires a lot of resources."
"The reporting feature isn't very good."
"I would like to see Acropolis add the ability to migrate VMs between storage containers. I don't know if they've added this in the latest versions, but I haven't seen it yet. It's mainly about AHV. When we use VMware, we can move between storage containers. In VMware, it's just like regular storage, and we can move it."
"In a hybrid cloud setup, we should be able to port our floors from on-premises to the public cloud and from the public cloud to on-premises."
"There is a need is to be able to consume Nutanix storage from outside the cluster for other, non-Nutanix workloads."
"With some projects that we are deploying, there are errors that arise when adding nodes."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Hyper-V is free when you buy Windows Server. You only have to pay for engaging in the management aspect in System Center."
"Because we're an NGO or a charity, we get discount rates from Microsoft. The costs are not astronomical for us. To give you an example, Office 2019 would only cost 30 or 45 for us. We tend to use the on-premises version rather than the cloud version. The reason is that the subscription service works out more expensive after a few years than the on-premise version. We're not worried about having the bleeding edge stuff. We just want it to be functional."
"I wish the licensing was simpler, and allowed for a greater number of VM's with the Microsoft standard licensing, but overall I think it's fair. The pricing is definitely fair."
"The pricing is not an issue for us because we have a licensing agreement with Microsoft. So we are given an 80% discount."
"I recommend Hyper-V to customers with budget constraints."
"Microsoft Hyper-V is not expensive and is easy to set up."
"I use the free version of Hyper-V."
"Hyper-V is expensive."
"AHV is free! This is a great feature that should be taken advantage of."
"The setup cost, pricing, and licensing are very competitive and TCO is very low compared to three-tier solutions."
"Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure could be cheaper. It's costly to upgrade the solution. There are no additional costs aside from the license."
"The overall cost depends on the contract of each customer and the discounts they have, but the price for the three-tier architecture can be slightly lower."
"I don't feel that I am receiving the performance which I am paying for."
"Its price is fine. I can't really complain about that."
"Our customers are on three years license to use Nutanix Acropolis AOS. The price of the solution includes all features and support."
"There are a lot of features included with Nutanix that cost a lot with other companies."
