What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

We have not encountered any deployment issues. It went very smoothly. You can deploy the OVA/QCOW2 file to multiple hypervisor platforms or use a RHEL distribution instead.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Aside from the Flash-based UI needing to be refreshed, it is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

One Turbonomic instance supports up to 10,000 VMs, so no, scalability was not an issue.

How are customer service and support?

Customer Service:

Customer service is great.

Technical Support:

Technical support is great.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used vRealize Operations Manager a lot for VMware solution monitoring. I changed to Turbonomic because it is a vendor-agnostic platform that can be used for monitoring, but really is an automation and control platform for optimizing your entire environment.

How was the initial setup?

Initial setup was straightforward: deploy OVA, assign IP address, log in as administrator, configure your targets, done. You can be up and going within 60 minutes.

What about the implementation team?

An in-house team implemented it.

What was our ROI?

I typically see a 30%-40% ROI in the first year.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Try the solution out; it is easy to set up and the first 30 days are free. After that, scope your requirements and talk to Turbonomic about the cost of the solution and then NEGOTIATE a discount.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Before choosing this product, we evaluate d VMware vROps, ManageEngine AppManager, and OpManager.

What other advice do I have?

Try it out for free and see how quickly it can optimize your environment.

Disclosure: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer: I work for RoundTower Technologies and we are a Platinum partner of Turbonomic.

Creating custom dashboards is easy and gives quick visibility into a specific groups of systems or metrics.

What is most valuable?

The default dashboards give an excellent view of the current health of the virtual infrastructure. But its not just current health, it give sensible recommendations for remediation. Creating custom dashboards is easy and gives quick visibility into specific groups of systems or metrics.

How has it helped my organization?

We have been able to get the most out of our hardware investment as its being used more efficiently. Virtual machine resource over and under commitment quickly filters to the top and can be addressed. We are also using the storage integration module which allows us to track storage performance from virtual machine to storage controller.

What needs improvement?

When trying to view a trend at 4+ day period, the trend lines tend to flatten out and move to a single data point a day.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this product for about 2 and a half years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No issues and it can't get any easier. Love the virtual appliance deployment.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

None.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

None.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

I'm in contact with our Customer Experience Manager every month. He is always checking to see how things are going, asking what can be improved, and offering assistance in using the functions of the product.

Technical Support:

I've had very few interactions with support but the ones I've had have been very helpful and resolved the issue.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

None.

How was the initial setup?

Step 1. Deploy OVA.
Step 2. Connect to vCenter.
Step 3. Complete

Pretty Straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

In-house.

The customizable dashboard lets us get quick insight into our environment.

What is most valuable?

The customizable dashboard lets us get quick insight into our environment. The quick overview of your environment allows you to get to fixing the things that matter most quickly.

How has it helped my organization?

It allows us to plan accordingly for any future growth.

What needs improvement?

There needs to be a way to permanently ignore certain alerts, such as if you have a server where you know the HDD space is low but also know it's never going to grow any to tell it to always ignore that one. Also email alerts for HDD space do not seem to exist, or if they do they aren't working properly or they aren't self explanatory to setup.

For how long have I used the solution?

About a year.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No, we did not have any deployment issues

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No issues with stability

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Customer service is top notch, the product demos and trial we got early on were very helpful.

Technical Support:

We haven't had to use tech support yet but I'm sure they are fantastic

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did use Virtualization Manager before and it didn't seem near as robust as Turbonomic and it was more expensive so we switched.

How was the initial setup?

Setup was very easy.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented it with the help of VMTurbo team.

What other advice do I have?

This is an overall great and easy to use product and has been very helpful in our organization, definitely recommend it!

Good support, has improved our efficiency, and has a helpful planning tool
Pros and Cons
  • "The automation and orchestration components are definitely the best part, as you can tell it what it can do and when, and just let it be."
  • "Some features are only available via changes to the deployment YAML, and it would be better to have them in the UI."

What is our primary use case?

We looked to this product to help us to right-size our virtual machines and containers. Most people who request virtual machines tend to request more resources than they need, and most of the time it's hard to prove that they don't.

Our environment is entirely on-premises. We have virtual machines and Kubernetes running on some of those VMs. We also have plans to go to the cloud with some workloads in the future, so it's good to have this tool to help get the sizing just right when the time comes to pull the plug.

How has it helped my organization?

Turbonomic has been helping us use our resources more efficiently, the challenge we currently face internally is getting people to allow the servers to be turned off to make the changes recommended.

I also like the planning tool, which is helpful to make sure we have enough capacity for failing over one datacenter to the other in case of disaster, while still maximizing what we already have and helping to keep us from making host purchases we don't need yet. It's nice not having to make all those calculations on my own.

What is most valuable?

At the moment, I have only really had the opportunity to manage virtual machines with it.

We're starting to let it look at our Kubernetes workloads as well.

The automation and orchestration components are definitely the best part, as you can tell it what it can do and when, and just let it be. However, I haven't reached that point yet. That is the plan for the future though.

I really like the planning tool so I can make sure we have enough resources for upcoming projects that require servers, while still having enough resources for our disaster recovery failover needs.

What needs improvement?

The reporting feature could be made a little more seamless with the rest of the tool. It would be nice to be able to share and print the reports a little more easily.

Some features are only available via changes to the deployment YAML, and it would be better to have them in the UI.

The upgrade process is a bit tedious, but I know the team is working on that.

The ability to set the scope at the dashboard level and let it flow down to all the widgets you add would be amazing. Having to select the scope per widget is a bit tedious.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Turbonomic for just under a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is pretty stable, we have not had issues with that.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Turbonomic seems scalable to me.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is where Turbonomic shines.

Lots of features are still in the works but the company really makes sure you have a lot of attention and support after the sale, which is sometimes hard to get. Most of the time, once a vendor has your money, you never hear from them again. However, I have had a great experience with post-sales support and a lot of hand-holding.

It is really well done on their part to make their customer happy.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not use a similar solution prior to this one.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is pretty straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

Deployed was completed in-house.

What was our ROI?

We have no ROI so far.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's worth the time and money investment if you can afford it.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated VMware vROps before selecting Turbonomic.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

We utilized the Plan View to understand our hardware requirements

What is most valuable?

  • Improving the overall efficiency of the dashboard.
  • Plan View
  • Environmental Health Chart

How has it helped my organization?

We utilized the Plan View to understand our hardware requirements. When we replaced our old hardware with the new hardware in our datacenters, we were able to more accurately predict our needs, then with the old rule of thumb method.

What needs improvement?

We have two Turbonomic sites set up and use an aggregator to provide an overview of them. The biggest suggestion that I could make is for the changes in the aggregator to be imported into the Turbonomic sites. Currently, we make the change at one site, then the second site keeps our environment on an equal basis.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have used Turbonomic for over two and a half years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No, there have never been any issues in deployment.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Early on in our PoC, we encountered issues, where some of our VMGuests failed to have their information log correctly. That was a number of versions ago and we have not experienced the issue since.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The only issue we have had with scalability is that the sites are not integrated into the aggregator. We need to update each site individually and cannot export or import the changes, and need to do double duty to maintain a level playing field in multiple environments.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Excellent.

Technical Support:

Excellent.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not have a previous solution.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

A vendor team who was excellent.

What other advice do I have?

Turbonomic has provided us an automagic optimization of our environment from an operational point of view. I am not sure if we could have as easily setup the same functionality from vROps or on such a granular level.

We have rebalanced our storage platform improving performance and capacity use across hosts and storage

What is most valuable?

We have found the automation for moving VMs optimally to be much better than VMware DRS. We have also rebalanced our storage platform using the recommended storage moves. This has improved performance and capacity use across hosts and storage.

Cluster Capacity Dashboards have been a huge benefit towards capacity planning and scaleout reviews

The planner element of the product is fantastic for host replacement planning and allowing the rightsizing of our disaster recovery (DR) provisioning.

How has it helped my organization?

We now have a more robust capacity request process within the department, and over the past 18 months, we have put on hold a scale out of physical hosts at both our primary datacenter and DR. This has saved the trust 1000s in new hosts and more than paid for the solution many times over.

What needs improvement?

The planner can be complex to complete.

For how long have I used the solution?

Three years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No issues.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No issues.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Excellent.

Technical Support:

Excellent.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager was our previous product. This solution was slow, overly complex and its impact limited in terms of what it was capable of doing.

How was the initial setup?

Very straightforward and the technical team walked us through all we needed to configure.

What about the implementation team?

In-house, as it was very straightforward.

What was our ROI?

This year, we have probably saved around £24,000 on new host scaleouts.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We pay a subscription model, which more than pays for itself each year.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Yes, we used SolarWinds Virtualization Manager.

What other advice do I have?

As a manager of a large complex critical healthcare infrastructure, this product has been a huge benefit to me and my team. It is the go to solution for troubleshooting and decision-making regarding our VMware-based datacenters.

Gives us a good idea of the hardware specs we will need for future expansion

What is most valuable?

  • Assure service performance
  • Policy/automation
  • Plan/capacity planning
  • Application module
  • Network module

How has it helped my organization?

Assure Service Performance: This feature is useful, because it gives us insightful information (similar to ESXTOP, but minus all the analysis) about a virtual machine (VM), whether it is over-provisioned or under-provisioned. The recommendations help us maintain a well-balanced virtual environment.

Policy/Automation: We set up a policy of automatically adding more vCPUs to the VMs based on Turbonomic's recommendation and continuous monitoring. This feature serves a dual-purpose for us: alleviate administrative tasks for our sysadmins and help maintain the highest performance in our VMs.

Plan: It is a great tool for capacity planning. It helps to eliminate all the guesses and gives us a good idea of the hardware specs we will need for future expansion.

Application/Network Module: Another great features that we use in our environment to help autoscale our application servers, so they are performing smoothly and fluidly with minimal intervention.

What needs improvement?

It would be helpful to have the option to display the target(s) by their host name instead of their IP address. Also, hopefully Turbonomic will continue to increase supports for more target types (vendors).

For how long have I used the solution?

For me, a bit over a year. However, our team has been using it for years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

It has been a while, and I forgot. If there were any issues, they were probably very minimal. Otherwise, it was pretty straightforward.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Nothing so far.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

It has been excellent.

Technical Support:

It has been excellent.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were using both Veeam and VMTurbo at one point, but it was management's decision to go with VMTurbo.

How was the initial setup?

It wasn't too complex.

What about the implementation team?

Vendor team. They were knowledgeable and the deployment was pretty smooth.

What was our ROI?

Not applicable.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Not applicable.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?
