Its reliability and security are the features most valuable for us.

What is most valuable?

Its reliability and security are the features most valuable for us. We know we can depend on it and that it keep our data secure.

It's also a ubiquitous solution. It seems that OBD is everywhere. I know that knowing how to use it in one company will help me in my career at another company.

How has it helped my organization?

The biggest improvement to our organization is from a security perspective. It just keeps all our data safe as an integral part of the company. It's our go-to database solution.

What needs improvement?

Although we're not using the latest version, there are some ODB tools that are quite cumbersome to use. For example, we often use the standard backup tool and have found it to be pretty cryptic. It's needs improvement in usability as it takes a lot of effort to use.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using it since 1992.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

We've had no issues with deployment.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's stable. We haven't had any issues with instability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We don't. I know it does, but we don't. We are a pretty small shop. Our data's small, so not really.

How are customer service and support?

This is one of our favorite things about ODB. The support is pretty good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I used another database and data storage system as a developer in a prior role.

How was the initial setup?

It's a very complex product, and it takes a lot of skill and experience to implement it. It's a lot easier now, but back then it was like 75 floppy disks for setup.

What other advice do I have?

Consider an open source solution as well.

The most valuable feature for us is certainly the scalability of the DB as we need capabilities for multiple terabytes of data.

Valuable Features

The most valuable feature for us is certainly the scalability of the DB as we need capabilities for multiple terabytes of data.

Improvements to My Organization

I don't know much about other organizations, and I've used SQL in the past at other companies, but because most of our customers are different federal government agencies, it's provided us scale to support many terabytes of data.

Room for Improvement

Recently with the 12.102 version, Oracle decreased the number of hardware you can use. I would like them to revert that back to where it was. We use the standard edition, so obviously that's going to hurt our customers as Oracle is reducing the hardware we can use.

Use of Solution

We've been using DB since the beginning, so 33 years now. I haven't used it personally since then, but the company has.

Deployment Issues

We've had no issues with deployment.

Stability Issues

It's definitely stable. We've had no issues with instability.

Scalability Issues

It's very scalable, which is the primary reason we use it.

Customer Service and Technical Support

Oracle's technical support is better than most, but it's not perfect. Obviously, when we open a ticket for support, it needs to get escalated a couple of times before we actually get an engineer who can really get down and help us. That's typical of the industry, so it's better than most, but not perfect.

Initial Setup

The complexity of the initial setup depends. The patch releases have been simple: you download, you install, and it works fine. There have been no issues that we've run into there. The major upgrades, however, I think with the new 12.102, they've made some changes in it, so we're still trying to figure that one out.

Other Advice

It's a great product, no doubt about it. Oracle did a good job on it and that's why they have a big market share. I think if you're starting from scratch, look for other alternatives. Investigate the alternatives to see if they can meet your needs.

Technically, it's almost flawless, I would say. There are bugs in it of course, but they are bugs that doesn't impact us as a company.

Stable relational database management system with good partitioning and analytic functions
Pros and Cons
  • "Stable solution with analytic and partitioning functions that work well."
  • "Technical support and how they treat their customers need to be improved."

What is our primary use case?

I'm working as a BI consultant, so the usual use cases for this solution are creating data integration and building a data mart.

What is most valuable?

The features I found most valuable on Oracle Database are the standard features: partitioning and analytic functions.

What needs improvement?

Oracle's technical support needs improvement.

Oracle should really continue working on their cloud topics. Everything they're currently doing on the cloud is on the right path, but they need to continue working on it.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Oracle Database for 15 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle Database is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

As an on-premise solution, scalability depends on the hardware, but I find Oracle Database scalable.

How are customer service and support?

I contacted Oracle technical support in the past about a bigger issue and it was a hassle. On a scale of one to five, with one being the worst and five being the best, I'll give technical support a score of three.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I'm using all kinds of products, and it's not that I'm switching from one product to another. The product I'm using will depend on the client. We choose products that would be the best fit for the architecture. Architecture and pricing are the main points for choosing which product to use for each client.

How was the initial setup?

Oracle Database is more complex than any other database that I have installed so far. On a scale of one to five, with one being the worst and five being the best, I'm rating the initial setup for this solution a three.

What about the implementation team?

I implemented Oracle Database in-house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing for Oracle Database is on the high-end side. In addition to the standard licensing and fixed fees for this solution, there's a cost for implementation and additional services.

Their licensing policy also needs improvement.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I evaluated Microsoft SQL Server.

What other advice do I have?

I have experience with MicroStrategy and also with SQL server reporting tools. The last time I worked with MicroStrategy was two years ago. With Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services, I didn't work with it for a long time. I'm not currently working with it.

I'm not much into development nowadays. The only tool I'm currently working with directly is any kind of database, or with Power BI, e.g. Oracle Database, SQL Server, Access, etc.

In our organization, we don't use Oracle Database. In my own company, we don't use this solution, because it's being used on the client side. I'm working as a consultant, so I'm using it and most of the other tools, always on behalf of my clients.

Deployment for this solution took an hour, and what I did was a fresh install, not an update. I just set up a new Oracle database to try out new things, and not for setting it up on the client site. I implemented it myself and didn't need a third party or a technical team to help with the deployment.

I have no idea on the licensing costs of Oracle Database because it's the clients who pay for the licenses.

If I would install a new database, I would not go for Oracle. If Oracle Database is currently installed in the company, then it's okay to use it, otherwise, I won't recommend it as a new installation. My reason for not recommending it to others is because of their bad license policy and how they've treated their customers badly, in the past.

I'm giving Oracle Database a score of eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

A stable and scalable database solution with a useful query optimization feature
Pros and Cons
  • "I like the query part and the optimization of the query to get the data. I also like its speedy recovery and stability. In the security part, the loss of data is minimal for any crashes that could happen. First of all, it might not occur, or if it happens, the recovery of the data is smoother than others."
  • "It would be better if the administrator part could be simplified. At the moment, we need specialized skills for managing or administering Oracle Database. If that is simplified, my juniors or basic database engineers could use it. Right now, we need specific administrative skills to manage the Oracle Server."

What is our primary use case?

We are using a BI solution and Oracle Transaction Server for transaction data. So, transactional data is being stored in the Oracle Database.

What is most valuable?

I like the query part and the optimization of the query to get the data. I also like its speedy recovery and stability. In the security part, the loss of data is minimal for any crashes that could happen. First of all, it might not occur, but if it happens, the recovery of the data is smoother than others.

What needs improvement?

It would be better if the administrator part could be simplified. At the moment, we need specialized skills for managing or administering Oracle Database. If that is simplified, my juniors or basic database engineers could use it. Right now, we need specific administrative skills to manage the Oracle Server.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been dealing with Oracle Database for more than a decade.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle Database is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle Database is definitely scalable. For the project we are working on, the team size is around 500 to 600 engineers. But not everyone is working on Oracle. Even if we go with the 10% or 5% count, you still end up with 20 to 50 people who are dealing with the SQL queries, day in, day out.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this database solution to potential users, but it depends on their specific business needs.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give Oracle Database an eight.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

A stable and scalable solution which is easy to install and offers great support
Pros and Cons
  • "Optimization of databases, RAC, Data Guard Replication with Data Guard and RAC Database are the best features."
  • "There is a new version of Oracle and Database Firewall, version 20, for which I would be interested in receiving training."

What is our primary use case?

For the Database solution, I'm working with the 12c version. For Security Solution, I'm working with Oracle based Audit Vault and Database Firewall, versions 12 and 20.

We use the solution in Cameroon, where I reside, for payroll purposes.

What is most valuable?

Optimization of databases, RAC, Data Guard Replication with Data Guard and RAC Database are the best features. The solution offers many features. We try to tailor the deployment to the needs of the company involved. Some need replication, others optimization and still others, RAC.

What needs improvement?

There is a new version of Oracle and Database Firewall, version 20, for which I would be interested in receiving training. For the moment, training is not an option. Having the time to undertake this does not pose an issue for me, as I would speak with my supervisor to allot the requisite time.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle Database for nearly four or five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The version of the solution being employed today is definitely scalable.

How are customer service and technical support?

We work as a partner company with Oracle and have a representative in our region to whom we can appeal directly for collaboratively resolving any issues which may arise with our clients.

We are satisfied with the support. While we don't encounter issues on a daily basis, there has not been a single time that we have failed to resolve one when it has arisen.

How was the initial setup?

The installation does not take long. They have provided a simplified edition on the hardware and database of the latest version of Oracle Database Appliance, a product I have recently installed. It is quite user friendly and makes things easier than has been the case in the last five years. With the improved installation, the solution is now easy to install.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing costs are on a yearly basis, although I am a technicican and am not involved in this process. This is in someone else's purview.

What other advice do I have?

In NFC Cameroon the solution is deployed on-premises. When it comes to Oracle Database, certain companies are deployed on-cloud and others on-premises. We have yet to deploy on cloud.

We have many clients, ranging from medium sized to very large. We have assisted more than ten clients in implementing the solution in our data center.

I rate Oracle Database as an eight out of ten.

Easy to use, stable, and offers great technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "Technical support is great."
  • "If you want to scale, it will get even more expensive."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for data storage.

What is most valuable?

Oracle is one of the strongest solutions on the market.

The user experience and the tools provided with Oracle are great. For example, there's the SQL developer, and these tools are really easy and user-friendly. You get used to it very fast.

The initial setup is straightforward.

The solution scales well.

We have found the solution to be quite stable.

Technical support is great.

What needs improvement?

The solution has a high cost. Due to this, people are going for open-source instead.

If you want to scale, it will get even more expensive.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for ten years or so. It's been a decade or so.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is good. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability potential depends on the package that a company gets. If you purchase Datadog, it will be easy to extend and have multiple nodes. The more features you purchase, however, the higher the price. Scaling comes at a cost.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support has been very helpful. They respond on time and you don't waste any time waiting for the tickets. You just get the answer directly usually in the same hour or on the same day at a maximum. We are extremely satisfied with them.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not overly complex or difficult. It's very straightforward.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The cost is very high. All the customers that I know are planning to move to an open-source database for this reason.

What other advice do I have?

I'm just a customer and an end-user.

We used to use 12C, however, we recently moved to 19C.

I would recommend the solution if the company has a budget and if you have a project that will provide revenue to cover the price for the actual product. If a company is going to start a product that will not give the right revenue at the beginning, I would suggest PostgreSQL.

I would rate the product at an eight out of ten. It loses a  few points mostly due to the high price tag.

A reliable solution with great performance
Pros and Cons
  • "This solution is very reliable. The performance is great."
  • "It would be nice if creating indexes and other small, repetitive tasks could be automated."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution to run custom-made software for medical, social security, and medical care companies in Guatemala.

Within our organization, there are roughly 70-75 employees using this solution.

What is most valuable?

This solution is very reliable. The performance is great.

What needs improvement?

It would be nice if creating indexes and other small, repetitive tasks could be automated.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle Database for 10 years.

How are customer service and technical support?

We receive very good support here in Guatemala from our local partner. We're very happy to have this relationship.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup wasn't complex, but it wasn't simple either — it's in between.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, on a scale from one to ten, I would give this solution a rating of nine.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Extremely reliable with very high system resilience
Pros and Cons
  • "A very reliable solution."
  • "Digital support of the product could be improved."

What is our primary use case?

‎I am deputy head of ICT and we are customers of Oracle.

What is most valuable?

This is an extremely reliable solution with very high system resilience.

What needs improvement?

Digital support of the product could be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using this solution for a couple of years.

How are customer service and technical support?

We use premium support and there are some difficulties there. It can be complex, particularly when you catch them on a shift change, and there is a change in engineering staff.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very straightforward. We have a server administrator and database administrator who monitor the solution. We have over 3,000 users in our company.

What other advice do I have?

I rate this product a 10 out of 10.
