What's your experience using Tableau for HR analytics?
Hi all,
I am the Group HR Director for a large manufacturing company.
We are exploring different BI tools for HR analytics. Kindly advise from your experience of using Tableau for HR analytics and what other BI tools you recommend.
Pui Jeng... Tableau is a leading tool and is pretty easy to deploy and use. The reality however about BI tools is that there are a great number that can do pretty much the same thing (too many to list) as this is a very mature technology space. Given that they can essentially take any data and present it in a report/visualization, the question is really about your environment. For instance, PowerBI would be highly recommended if you are operating in a MSFT environment. If not and Salesforce is a major part of what you use (e.g. Salesforce Lightning), then Tableau may make sense from an investment/integration perspective. If this is simply a need for a departmental HR tool that is quick and easy to use, then you make want to look at some standalone cloud tools. There are two main factors: business and data. From a business perspective, you need to know the questions that you are looking to answer, as no tool will do that for you. On the data side, you really need to have a clear picture of where your data is, how much of it you can access, and what the quality looks like to start (or your reports will not be accurate). Once you have this information, you should look at tools that have tried and tested integrations for your specific scenario. A good general list of leaders would be MSFT, Tableau, Tibco, Qlik, SiSense, SAP, Oracle. The latter two would only really be recommended if you if you are running your company on one of their ERP platforms. You could also add Google if your company is running on their enterprise apps (e.g. Google Looker). If you are looking for niche cloud-based tools that are designed for HR, then you can just google that and you will come up with a list (e.g. Visier), but again, do your due diligence on APIs/integrations for your specific environment if you are going "off-platform." So, in SUMMARY: Tableau is a very good tool and you can't really go wrong with it, but there are several options to consider that are pretty much the same. Just remember that the tool is not the solution - it is simply a technology to enable delivery of your defined business questions based on the data that you have. Hope this helps.

It depends on what kind of HR analytics you consider. What are the data sources, and HR systems? How many users will deal with it? What is your business goal? You can start with open source and then evaluate commercial platforms. Tableau is a very complex solution for heavy BI deployment.
Well Tableau is a BI Platform, you can use it to build HR reports, widgets, and UI elements supported by Tableau, in my opinion, are enough to build almost all kinds of dashboards, still, if you feel Tableau lacks then extensions are the way to go.
