BDRShield and Cohesity DataProtect are two contenders in the data protection category. Cohesity DataProtect seems to have the upper hand due to its broader feature set and stronger customer support.
Features: BDRShield features automatic backup replication and comprehensive support for virtual environments, along with key compression and deduplication capabilities. Cohesity DataProtect integrates seamlessly with cloud platforms and offers near-instant recovery and efficient data search, backed by a unified management interface.
Room for Improvement: BDRShield users desire better support services, more detailed automation, and robust reporting. Cohesity DataProtect calls for enhanced legacy system support and a more user-friendly interface, along with improvements in backup and replication efficiency.
Ease of Deployment and Customer Service: BDRShield provides simple on-premises deployment but faces challenges with inconsistent support. Cohesity DataProtect is praised for its comprehensive deployment options and reliable, knowledgeable technical support.
Pricing and ROI: BDRShield appeals to small and medium businesses with its cost-effective, straightforward pricing model, albeit with fewer advanced features. Cohesity DataProtect, priced higher, offers significant long-term savings and is attractive to larger firms seeking robust solutions.
Using Cohesity DataProtect is easier to manage, and it simplifies various components into one architecture, reducing the need for extensive human resources to manage backups.
Not needing technical support is even better than good technical support.
The support can depend on the region, and for larger customers, I advise having a Technical Account Manager for better assistance.
For the support, I can provide a rating of four only because they initially provide some steps, but later say they are not sure, which is a problem in a production environment.
Cohesity DataProtect is built on a scale-out architecture, which means it can effectively scale to meet various needs.
On the whole, any problems were more related to hardware limitations rather than issues with Cohesity DataProtect itself.
There could always be little things that could still be fixed or improved for stability.
The container functionality is very limited at the moment, not covering the whole container.
There is room to improve the user interface of Cohesity DataProtect for more intuitive navigation.
While there are improvements to be made, such as providing support for older systems like IBM iSeries and tandem systems from HP, the solution overall shifts from older methods to modern practices.
I find Cohesity DataProtect to be expensive.
The features I find most valuable are ease of backup, ease of restore, the full restore, just getting some data out of a backup server or even the applications that are in the server, going through the database or going to Exchange.
Global deduplication ensures that only unique data blocks are stored, significantly reducing storage consumption.
The option to maintain evidence in Europe for regulatory compliance, the ability to maintain the backup with the same technology and same control plane, along with the same solutions to use backup solutions such as S3 or similar services in AWS, is what we are working with.
The platform is based on a scale-out architecture with each node having compute, RAM, SSD, and HDD.
