Offers a unified view, supports many data source types, and provides good data discovery
The solution needs to improve: Scan Reliability. Enhancing the functionality and speed of the remote scanner setup is imperative. User Interface Navigation: The dashboards and findings landscape require significant improvement. API Flexibility: It is crucial to make enhancements in data export operations. Navigation and Usability: Some users find catalog navigation challenging due to the lack of a search-by-column feature, making locating specific data difficult. Export Functionality: The export feature tends to be buggy, particularly when dealing with large data sets, leading to delays and necessitating manual intervention FalsePositives: The process has to find a new way to validate the regex match pattern by validating with some external source

Gives us great visibility into data governance, and integration with Microsoft solutions is easier
There is no AIP for Linux systems. That's a setback. Another thing it's lacking is libraries to work with Python. It has libraries for C# and C++, for example, but not for Python and, these days, Python is very useful. Power Automate can be improved as well. You can do plenty of things with it but it still doesn't do everything that you have in a full development language. It doesn't have that flexibility. I would also like more integrations in Power Automate. Because so many things are a premium with Power Automate, you cannot do everything. There are a bunch of integrations that you have to pay more to use. That's not very good.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I like BigID's in-depth discovery and scanning capabilities, especially for unstructured data. This feature is a standout compared to competitors. The tool's data classification capabilities are impressive. It offers custom classifiers and a blend of regular exploration and artificial intelligence, making it a next-generation solution. This enhances data security, and its security posture management is straightforward and user-friendly."
"BigID offers different scan types for data discovery. The most powerful one is the full scan, which scans both data and metadata. However, the metadata scan is faster in comparison."
"One of the most valuable things in a data-focused world is a tool, a technology that's data-centric, not trying to master data management or whatever else. It's a source of truth for what data an organization holds, giving it the ability to catalog, categorize, and understand its data."
"The tool's most valuable feature is correlation. Using BigID's data classification capabilities has strengthened our data security. It lets me classify and connect data, which helps me manage data at various classification levels."
"The data classification offered by the tool can help companies improve their security strategy"
"BigID integrates well with our other products."
"It provides a unified view across different databases and supports a wide range of data source types, including cloud and on-premises systems."
"BigID's scanning feature is its most valuable component."
"One of the valuable features of Purview is the ability to create a legal hold on a user's account within the compliance portal. That's pretty useful when it comes to any litigation or if you want to redeem the content within a mailbox, OneDrive, or a generic public SharePoint site."
"The tool's most valuable feature is in the area of OCR."
"We can use Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention to manage devices and site policies."
"The solution's IDM (Indexed Document Matching), EDM (Exact Data Matching), and DCM (Described Content Matching) features have been most effective in identifying and mitigating potential data leaks."
"When you are going to use Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention, most of the setup is already done by default as per your needs."
"There's a good amount of documentation in case you run into any problems."
"It has helped our clients to reduce the time to action on insider threats because it can be integrated."
"The solution's most valuable feature is the mature O365 DLP, which works with SharePoint and Teams."

Cons

"BigID is making some forays into the GRC space, and that's a natural progression. I'd like to see that improve so that data governance is better, data risk is identified, and the ability to control and mitigate it."
"The challenge we encountered was with data connection across multiple databases. We struggled with configuring the data connection successfully. However, with the assistance of dynamic teams, we resolved this issue."
"The tool currently lacks security features."
"More classifications about different states are needed"
"In terms of what could be improved, when you're looking in a BigID file, you cannot really get the whole file. You have to export it to download it to another platform that allows you to completely view it, or run a program. That was one of the things that was really a disappointing point for me. Not to be able to view everything. There's a lot more data, but you can't get it all at once."
"BigID is expensive. I prefer McAfee."
"Some users find catalog navigation challenging due to the lack of a search-by-column feature, which makes it difficult to locate specific data quickly."
"One concern I have with BigID is regarding certain scans, like the multi-scan. The issue is that we can stop and retrieve these scans, but once they start, they go through an enumeration process."
"It could cover more solutions and technologies."
"The platform can be challenging to navigate and has the potential for improvement."
"The solution should provide better integration with other systems."
"We faced a performance issue with the tool when we didn't get alerts for file uploads."
"The tool's user interface and document fingerprinting have been very poor for my customers because uploading files manually can be problematic."
"There is a need for improvements, particularly in ensuring that file-based recognition is more reliable and comprehensive."
"There is a lot of ambiguity when you are setting up labels, such as sensitive information labels. It is a little daunting at first if you don't have prior knowledge, and there is a little bit of a learning curve for setting up the labels. Some of the setup wizards could be more helpful from an AI perspective. They can streamline the setup through more AI technologies so that you don't have to jump through so many hoops and different menus and dropdowns. It would be useful to have a setup wizard that is more hands-off and engaging for setting up the information type labels. If you tell them this is what we're trying to protect, it should basically start to lead you down that path of best practices. Such a feature would be great."
"The support is poor."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The product is expensive, but so are all competitor tools"
"The pricing depends. If you have thousands of data sources to connect and manage, and you struggled with an MDM package in the past, you'll find BigID valuable and even cheap. But if you're a small business, it's probably not the right tool for you."
"The solution is expensive."
"The solution is not licensed per user but rather based on capacity. For instance, organizations with large amounts of data, such as 50 GB or more, are the ones that typically qualify for BigID."
"I think that BigID's pricing is very reasonable."
"The product has the best price-to-performance ratio."
"The pricing is reasonable."
"We are using the E3 license for Microsoft 365 with the E5 compliance license add-on."
"If one is very cheap and ten is very expensive, I rate the price as one out of ten."
"The solution’s pricing is reasonable."
"Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention is part of a bundle and is not sold as a standalone product."
"It is a part of our Microsoft licensing. We pay for a yearly renewal. Its price is reasonable for the size of the organization we are. It is fairly competitive, and you get what you pay for. We have an E5 license, and a part of understanding the E5 license is to see what all you get with it. If you really look at it from that standpoint, you get a lot of value. You have Defender and all its security features in there as well. Their licensing is fairly flexible. They have different programs. We've seen ones where you could pay for up to three to five years in advance. There is also a monthly pay-as-you-go type of deal, but we're doing a yearly renewal and fixing the budget."
"You get the solution in a bundle if you get the E5 suite."
