A tool that offers good capacity management and product management
I am satisfied with the product. The tool streamlines our company's data backup and recovery processes since the solution fits into our landscape and portfolio, especially with what we have in our infrastructure, and it actually helps us comply with data regulations. The tool protects critical data by dealing with areas like unauthorized access. I don't have hands-on experience with the product to be able to comment on how its UI enhances our company's data management tasks. The tool is majorly used in our company's operations team. I only work on certain projects and help the teams to deploy the product. The tool has the ability to handle growing data volume since my company has not faced any scalability issues since we were able to manage areas like sizing and future capacity expansion. To date, my company has not found any scalability issues with the product. It is a good product that fits in the latest infrastructures very well. If you have legacy products in your environment or data centers, then it is better to consider some other product other than Dell PowerProtect Data Manager. I rate the overall tool a seven or eight out of ten.

Highly stable, intuitive design, and integrates well
The scalability of Veritas Backup Exec is good. Veritas has physical hardware appliances, and hard disks, you can easily upgrade your backup appliances to have more storage if needed. It is easy to scale. We have approximately 200 people who use this solution in my organization. We are happy with the usage at this time. I recommend this solution for large-scale and enterprise companies.

"The most valuable feature of the solution is its integrated approach."
"I would say flexibility is the most important feature of the product. The performance and speed are the best on the market."
"Dell EMC PowerProtect Data Manager is user-friendly and easy to use. it does what it needs to do."
"The most valuable features of the solution are flexibility and data protection."
"The solution's initial setup is straightforward."
"The deduplication is the most valuable feature because it helps to control the overhead."
"It is easy to set up and use for daily processes and a good solution for preserving crucial data."
"I have not seen another backup solution as scalable as this one."
"Veritas Backup Exec is easily managed."
"I like that Backup Exec integrates with Microsoft Exchange. We can retrieve backups from the email boxes."
"The usability and interface of the solution are good."
"It's quite stable, and so far, we have had no technical issues with Veritas Backup Exec."
"The most valuable features of Veritas Backup Exec are the easy-to-use intuitive GUI. It is very easy to understand. I have never lost data and I have been able to recover all the data I need."
"This solution is not complex and you do not have to be too technical to use it."

Cons

"A lot of improvement is required in Dell's first level of support."
"You need to use additional software to back up entire environments. It will be good if they could support entire tape libraries."
"The Dell EMC PowerProtect Data Manager reports could improve. There should be different kinds of reports on failures, such as dashboards that we can submit to top management or auditors."
"As a new product, there are some things that still need to improve a bit as it matures."
"The solution should enhance its user interface and make it more flexible."
"The tool's scalability has certain shortcomings, making it an area where improvements are required."
"PPDM requires further development. It is primarily integrated with DevOps systems."
"There is always room for improvement. The compression ratio should be improved as well as the efficiency."
"I wish that they have an outlet for the other products from Veritas built into the Backup Exec product. For example, Backup Exec does only server backup. Currently, it is possible to read the backup of one other product, but if they can add more products so that you can just go into the dashboard of these other products by clicking on a button within the Backup Exec product, it would be great."
"If you keep it for too long and the catalog gets really big, the application tends to move slowly."
"They can work on the issue of the job timing out when it is unable to reach a selection item. It sometimes hangs up on the selection item, thus preventing the job from continuing."
"The solution lacked local support, which became an issue for us and our customers. They needed to have more presence on the ground."
"Currently, the solution does not have the capability to restore a single mailbox, so you lose a lot of time having to restore for example ten mailboxes just to recover one."
"Whenever a job fails, it would be a great improvement to be able to resume the job from that feature. Suppose a job was started this morning and that it is going on while there are interruptions like network issues, server restart issues, server connectivity issues, services stopping, etc. For some reason, let's assume that the job failed or that it was mistakenly canceled by another person. It will be a great improvement if that failed job can be continued."
"In terms of improvements, I think the pricing model could be improved. They charge you by port, for every port that you have even if you're not using all of them."
"Better integration with non-Microsoft products would be an improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We offer monthly or yearly subscriptions. The price could be cheaper."
"Dell PowerProtect Data Manager is not an expensive solution."
"The product is offered at a very competitive price in the market."
"The solution is more affordable than other vendors."
"The solution is not less expensive than competitors but pricing deals are available."
"The price of Dell EMC PowerProtect Data Manager is reasonable."
"The licensing costs and pricing model are based on capacity and the license is easy to upgrade."
"It has a good price-value ratio. Its price-value ratio is better than Veeam."
"Veritas licensing is somewhat expensive. They have to decrease the price."
"It is affordable, but I hope that the price will come down a lot because of other competitors. It is a good price for the customer, but sometimes, the competition provides a much lower price. There are two ways to license it. You can license it per instance or per terabytes of data that we are mocking up. It is enough because it is not so complex. It is good when you're working with customers."
"Regarding expense, Backup Exec is generally suitable for small and medium businesses. However, we can customize them based on the workload."
"I would like to see a better licensing model. They changed it and it's just horrendous."
"The solution costs $700 per agent and is expensive compared to other products that offer better stability."
"Licensing depends on the part of the backup you're using. If you have SQL backup, then you must have a SQL license. If you have normal data backup, you would require a license for that."
"The product's price is reasonable."
