Reliability and reasonable pricing enhance data center management
I researched on peerspot.com about IT solutions, specifically about HPE BladeSystem and HPE Synergy, because we are already using HP servers in our state data center. In HP Cloud System, we are using a converged infrastructure to connect LAN and SAN connectivity across the network. Regarding Virtual Connect technology, there is a noticeable impact on network management. For day-to-day operations, we use various applications such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams to connect virtually. Using HPE BladeSystem Virtual Connect technology in HP Cloud System, we achieve efficient network management with well-defined LAN and SAN connectivity. We already have a defined modular architecture in place designed by the HP team for our data center. My company name is National Institute for Smart Government, also called NISG, under the National e-Governance Division. My title is Technology Management Consultant. I would rate HPE BladeSystem as an eight out of ten.

Used to run the compute load on servers, but firmware and driver upgrades are a bit difficult

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"With iLO and other features, our experience has been really good especially when a lot of people are working remote or offsite."
"They have served different needs for us from virtualized web servers to dedicated databases and application servers."
"The features that are the most valuable to us are its scalability, performance, and cost."
"BladeSystem was a huge improvement over rack. We gained an awful lot of productivity when we went to BladeSystem, because we can set up so much infrastructure in one swipe."
"At the time, when we migrated to BladeSystem, we reduced the amount of energy, amount of space, and we got more capacity."
"It puts all the elements of the modern data center such as power, cooling, connectivity, redundancy, security, compute, and storage into a modular, right-sized and self-optimizing unit with agile intelligence."
"Probably the most value there is the compactness and the density you can get into the data center."
"HPE BladeSystem is very reliable, it is 100 percent stable."
"We are using Lenovo Flex System for our internal platform where we store our operating systems, Windows, Linux, and VMware, and then virtualize our machines."
"We use the solution as a compute model to run the compute load on servers."
"Flex System's best features are its performance and stability."
"It comes at a good price. We didn't face any problems with this product."
"One of the most valuable features of this solution is its ease of use."
"The Lenovo Flex System is very stable."
"I have found the solution to be quite stable."
"The functionality is reliable and requires minimal support."

Cons

"The only thing we think is on the down side is that you can't push them anywhere near as hard as the pizza-box servers; the rack mounts."
"HPE has a replacement system called Synergy, though it’s a more high-end system than the old C7000."
"Access to updated drivers and firmware. They now require you to log on and have the device serial number to get to drivers."
"In general, there is a 10% to 15% price gap compared to competitors."
"I would prefer to have changes in the compatibility of the blade servers with the new ones designed by HPE, as the top team's version does not have it."
"The management is great but there are other competitors that are implementing a better approach."
"Currently, in the case of a disk failure there is a need to remove the whole bay and as a result, to disconnect all the other disks."
"One way to improve would be in the monitoring and reporting. We get one report per server and it's ten pages long, but at the end, there's no aggregate showing the order of the infrastructure."
"The product could improve its integration capabilities."
"The installation was not easy."
"I had some difficulties with the initial setup."
"The solution's firmware and driver upgrades are a bit difficult."
"Continuing the production of this product is necessary. It is currently out of support, and we are seeking support from other sources besides Lenovo."
"It does not have the same module flexibility that was present in IBM Blade. On the Blade System, I was able to choose between the Cisco module, or BMC module. Since the switch to Lenovo, I have not had the same choice of modules, only the BMC modules."
"The user interface needs improvement because they have an application from which we have to manage the whole system and all of the infrastructure."
"The solution could improve by providing more integration with other platforms."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"BladeSystem is a little bit cheaper."
"With regards to the prices, they need to adapt to the current needs of the country."
"The HPE BladeSystem is an expensive solution."
"There is a one-time purchase for the HPE BladeSystem."
"The prices for the HPE Virtual Connect Modules are expensive compared to other I/O Modules available."
"Their licensing program is pretty simple."
"We have an annual license."
"It is not expensive, really, in this class of server products."
"The 14 blade server allows significant room for upscaling before having to invest in another chassis. You would have to purchase another chassis much sooner in the case of an eight or nine blade server."
"We are just paying the operational cost, which is not much."
"The is an annual license cost to use the Lenovo Flex System. If the price was less expensive and flexible overall and for additional features, our customers would be happier."
"There is a one-off payment to buy the equipment and the support is purchased annually."
"The price is interesting. I am able to quote a client based on their needs and offer them either Lenovo or Dell."
"We have the whole maintenance for the 3 years, starting the deployment. We also have the VMware license for 3 years and I think we have another license to buy. There are no additional costs besides licensing."
