Enables us to save data for data projection but could improve its integration with other backup solutions
NetApp SnapCenter is highly efficient because it allows you to automate the creation of snapshots. Instead of manually creating snapshots using IMS or HMS, you can schedule and automate them, specifying the timing and frequency. This eliminates the need for daily manual intervention and streamlines the process. SnapCenter also enables you to assign specific user roles to manage these tasks, enhancing efficiency. SnapCenter ensures that your LPOs and RTOs are extremely quick. Although it may seem expensive initially, after using it for a while, you'll appreciate the efficiencies and gains it provides. I recommend the solution. Overall, I rate the solution a seven out of ten.

Covers a large spectrum of products and operating systems and part of a multi-layer strategy for data protection
We use it like any other backup solution for resource restoration when needed and for populating systems in environments with data. We use NetBackup's data management strategies for multi-target backups and retentions. That's the short answer. The full explanation is quite involved. It would require describing our environment, our workflows, and how we use policies and vaulting policies to move data around. But to keep it brief, NetBackup simplifies managing data across multiple targets with various retention periods. NetBackup is part of a multi-layer strategy. It's one of the many tools we use, to ensure we don't rely on a single product. So, the product has positively impacted our protection strategy. Moreover, we're satisfied with its performance when it comes to the deduplication function.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The backup features are the most valuable because they allow the DBAs to replace SnapManager for Oracle (SMO), which is going away, and to do cloning as well. We can also clone to different servers and have the actual backup clone mounted on different servers. And we can split easily too."
"The way that it interconnects with VMware is really handy, because you can go right into your vSphere client, where you spend a lot of the day anyway, right-click on one of the VMs where you have backups running for however long, and you can restore either some files or restore the entire thing."
"It's a centralized, easy-to-use solution empowering RBAC management, monitoring, notifications, extensive logging, and backup schedules for standalone as well as groups of the same types of environments. The cloning capabilities accelerate development."
"The product’s most valuable feature is cloning."
"It's very helpful because SnapCenter is already integrated with VMware Snapshot, so it's very easy to use."
"It has very fast backup and can handle a huge amount of data. It also enables really fast recovery."
"It has greatly improved our DR activity."
"Technical support has been very helpful when we have issues."
"Veritas NetBackup is very stable and scales out very well."
"It saves time for the backup needs of our organization."
"The documentation is good."
"The troubleshooting is very good."
"They are among the top in the world for backup and recovery."
"AIR and duplication, overall management and troubleshooting."
"It's durable — we achieve what we expect from it."
"The most valuable feature of Veritas NetBackup is the protection policies or protection module."

Cons

"The Dashboard view needs to be more compressed with better ease of access and drill-down features. They should also reinstate Linux filesystem backups of storage volumes (which existed in the prior version)."
"The UI, the User Interface, needs to be improved. It's not as clean or modern as it could be."
"The tool could be faster."
"Since the solution's initial setup is complex, it should make training documents available in the public space."
"Groups might be helpful for each site or data center so that we know a given data center has these resources while another data center has those resources. It's not always easy to group hosts by type."
"The product lags in terms of availability."
"I'm waiting for SnapCenter for hybrid solutions. Right now, we only have SnapManager for hybrid. I need agents for that. People are looking to install SnapCenter in a SQL environment, but where they're running SQL on Hyper-V and using virtual files. Currently, we don't have support for hybrid."
"We would like to see more granular repording and reporting in bigger sets available in SnapCenter."
"We want a solution that can be scaled-out because our data is growing very quickly, and we aren't able to back it up quickly. It takes one or two days, which is a problem. It is very slow. We just use one backup server. We want another solution with maybe a backup server cluster to back up more data in one day. We want a solution that can be scaled-out to back up our data quickly and efficiently."
"System administrators would be more efficient in NetBackup if the number of tools and command lines was reduced."
"The speed of restoring data could be improved."
"Main area that could be improved is the pricing, to make it more competitive"
"There have been issues with performance and some features."
"There is room for improvement in the implementation of Power servers."
"The product is not able to keep up with other competitors in the market."
"We are facing a challenge regarding the support for Docker and Kubernetes features. We hope for the possibility of directly backing up Kubernetes and Docker images without the necessity of taking full virtual machine backups."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We have a site license, so it comes with the product."
"The product is inexpensive."
"It's free. The license is included with other NetApp products."
"We see a financial value with SnapCenter because we don't have to license Commvault, which is pretty expensive."
"The licensing is well-designed because it's already included in some packages with NetApp storage. Therefore, for most customers, it's okay as the SnapCenter license is already included in some NetApp bundles."
"It comes free with the amount of equipment we purchase from NetApp. In terms of pricing, zero is my favorite number."
"Pricing is very good because if you already have NepApp controllers, then it's included."
"The license for SnapCenter was included with the storage array."
"When we consider the quality and value of Veritas NetBackup, it is worth the cost."
"If you want to have more scalability you have to purchase more licenses. The license is annually and there are a lot of different licensing depending on the number of terabytes needed. It is not based on per-user, core, or servers. You can backup anything you want using the purchased terabyte space."
"I rate the product's pricing a seven out of ten."
"If you have a complex environment with dozens of different servers and apps, I recommend you look for TB licensing."
"It was on a yearly basis. During the annual review, when we asked them about our licensing, they couldn't explain it. For example, we had reduced by a factor of 40%, but our license only dropped by 5%. We would then ask Veritas people if we've reduced this much and shut down these servers, why has our license changed so less? They were never able to give us a straight answer. They weren't able to say, "Well, you're using this, and this is more expensive." In many cases, as we reduced our capacity and what we were using with Veritas NetBackup, our licensing actually went up, and they were often unable to explain why."
"The price of Veritas NetBackup is high, it should be reduced."
"The licensing fees are expensive."
"Our license is capacity-based."
