Has provided seamless virtualization and centralized control with strong security and reliable performance
I find almost every feature of Nutanix AHV Virtualization useful, as it's a very nice HCI solution from Nutanix. AHV is their native product, so it's very integrated with all the hardware they provide. Integration is very nice with the baseline hardware. We are using all built-in security features of Nutanix AHV Virtualization, which include encryption. It is very effective in protecting our VMs, and it is very secure. The impact of AHV, such as micro-segmentation, is very effective for us and it's working as per our requirements. We are very happy with the features. Role-Based Access is also a very nice feature for us to define to whom to give admin access and to whom to give read-only access. This kind of authentication helps us distribute tasks within the teams. Using Nutanix AHV Virtualization in a single management pane is very important to me, as it allows us to see everything related to our hardware, software, servers, and VMs from one console. We can reach everything from this one console, which provides a nice inside view for our software, hardware applications, server details, issues, alerts, or any unwanted activity. We are using the non-disruptive operations feature because Nutanix AHV Virtualization is in our production environment, and this feature helps us perform any activity without any downtime.

Has supported virtualization projects in side jobs but has required workarounds due to lack of maintenance
In my opinion, the best features of RHEV are that it is a real hypervisor and it is free, so it performs better than VMware. I have used the live migration feature in the past with RHEV. There is a free clone of it that is based on the open source. Live migration is a nifty feature if your app is not highly available and you need to do maintenance on a machine. You can migrate the VM off of it, do your maintenance, and move it back when you are done. RHEV has a high availability architecture with a built-in monitoring feature where you could see machines other than the one you are operating on. I tend to implement high availability not so much in RHEV, but by using standard application high availability strategies. Red Hat has another product specifically for high availability.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Nutanix AHV Virtualization provides measurable benefits in terms of time-saving and cost-saving because it is hardware-independent, allowing customers to choose from various hardware suppliers such as Cisco, HP, or Lenovo."
"It has a vs switch for the people who know Linux, in case it's easier for them to use AHV than it is to use VMware."
"Nutanix AHV's most valuable feature is the one-click upgrade capability."
"It is a stable solution. Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."
"Simplicity is the most valuable feature, and with the management capabilities and monitoring tools, clients can do everything they need to do in their day to day operations."
"The most valuable feature of the solution is the built-in data protection, that helps with backup in a matter of minutes."
"It is the simple non-consideration we get with this product that's great. It just works."
"The most valuable features are that AHV is highly secured, simple to set up, and easy and flexible to use."
"It is a stable solution...It is a scalable solution."
"Technical support for RHEV is very fast and good."
"The solution makes migration easy."
"The solution is stable, there are no bugs or glitches, it doesn't crash or freeze, and it's reliable with good performance."
"We are very satisfied with it."
"When you purchase RHEV, you are essentially buying a subscription license. This license can be integrated with various client types, including these integrations with the subscription."
"The biggest aspect for me is the disk usage, the virtual manager, and the deployment of machines."
"The price is the solution's most valuable aspect; it's much cheaper than, for example, VMware, so companies can save money using it if they need to."

Cons

"I would like to see more automation of Day One operations, such as DRS, and HA."
"If you want to install a specific operating system, you must first check to see if it is listed in the compatibility list; only then will you be able to install it, and that is one issue for now."
"Server migration from physical to virtual must be supported by Nutanix AHV Virtualization, but it is currently not supported."
"The solution is very expensive and is one of our concerns as we intend to upgrade."
"Some of our applications do not support Nutanix. There are some compatibility issues and some of our software cannot run on it."
"It would be better if the solution's replication to another site could be efficiently optimized."
"For the moment, the graphic user interface is not good, and it needs to be improved."
"It should focus on providing more detailed and helpful error messages. One area we'd like to see enhanced is better support for guest VMs, especially in a heterogeneous environment."
"There are two things that I would like to see improvement in when it comes to Red Hat. First is the pricing and second is the support."
"I heard that there are big differences between Red Hat eight and seven, but it's still quite difficult for me to judge it. I found it a bit more difficult to manage than version seven, which was much easier. In term of features, though, it is still not yet clear which is better. I have no clear idea of which features need to be changed at the moment."
"The solution should be made more user-friendly."
"When we do a direct comparison, then obviously VMware does better in terms of having Fault Tolerance and doing active disaster recovery and these kind of things. This is something that can be improved within Red Hat."
"The support is tricky in a few places. We're facing some challenges within Malaysia where we don't really have the system integrators available who can provide extended support. When we need personnel on-site, we can't get them."
"It would be better to have more patches, especially kernel-level updates, live and online so that we can keep the business up and running during this period."
"Red Hat by itself is not scalable. But you can have third party add-ons like Ceph to make it massively scalable."
"If you wanted to go to the desktop computer side of things, it lags behind in that you need to go to something like Fedora to get all the extra bells and whistles."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"AHV is free, it's an open-source solution."
"When comparing this solution to others on the market, such as VMware and Citrix, the price could be reduced."
"Nutanix AHV Virtualization is expensive. I rate it a six out of ten."
"The solution's pricing is cheap for a new customer but becomes expensive during renewal."
"The setup cost for four nodes was about $200,000 (in US currency)."
"The product is costly and comes with an annual subscription."
"Some of the features required additional licenses."
"The solution’s pricing is relatively fair."
"The solution does not require licencing but a subscription is necessary, which is very affordable."
"Its price depends on the use cases."
"I believe we pay on a yearly basis."
"Price-wise, RHEV is okay, in my opinion."
"RHEV offers pricing based on a per-physical-machine licensing model."
"We have to pay extra for vulnerability and fault tolerance."
"I would say the price is acceptable."
"The price of RHEV is high. It is an open-source solution, the price should be less. The price should not be on par with a solution, such as VMware. It's not more or equal to VMware, it's less, but the difference should be more substantial."
