Has provided seamless virtualization and centralized control with strong security and reliable performance
I find almost every feature of Nutanix AHV Virtualization useful, as it's a very nice HCI solution from Nutanix. AHV is their native product, so it's very integrated with all the hardware they provide. Integration is very nice with the baseline hardware. We are using all built-in security features of Nutanix AHV Virtualization, which include encryption. It is very effective in protecting our VMs, and it is very secure. The impact of AHV, such as micro-segmentation, is very effective for us and it's working as per our requirements. We are very happy with the features. Role-Based Access is also a very nice feature for us to define to whom to give admin access and to whom to give read-only access. This kind of authentication helps us distribute tasks within the teams. Using Nutanix AHV Virtualization in a single management pane is very important to me, as it allows us to see everything related to our hardware, software, servers, and VMs from one console. We can reach everything from this one console, which provides a nice inside view for our software, hardware applications, server details, issues, alerts, or any unwanted activity. We are using the non-disruptive operations feature because Nutanix AHV Virtualization is in our production environment, and this feature helps us perform any activity without any downtime.

Has supported virtualization projects in side jobs but has required workarounds due to lack of maintenance
In my opinion, the best features of RHEV are that it is a real hypervisor and it is free, so it performs better than VMware. I have used the live migration feature in the past with RHEV. There is a free clone of it that is based on the open source. Live migration is a nifty feature if your app is not highly available and you need to do maintenance on a machine. You can migrate the VM off of it, do your maintenance, and move it back when you are done. RHEV has a high availability architecture with a built-in monitoring feature where you could see machines other than the one you are operating on. I tend to implement high availability not so much in RHEV, but by using standard application high availability strategies. Red Hat has another product specifically for high availability.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Nutanix AHV's most valuable feature is the one-click upgrade capability."
"Nutanix's customer support is good, one of its biggest selling points."
"It is always a great deal to work with Nutanix AHV Virtualization because it saves a lot of time and reduces the need for human interventions."
"The redundancy factor features are valuable, and the storage features and volume system are great."
"The solution is very proactive and can even anticipate an issue that might occur."
"The most valuable feature of Nutanix AHV is the prism, it is a beneficial central management console."
"We use Prism Central, the centralized management console for AHV clusters. It allows administrators to manage multiple clusters from a single interface and provides a unified view of the entire infrastructure."
"The most valuable feature of Nutanix AHV Virtualization is the user-friendly environment, and the integration, implementation, and training for the solution are good."
"In my opinion, the best features of RHEV are that it is a real hypervisor and it is free, so it performs better than VMware."
"Technical support for RHEV is very fast and good."
"RHEV’s cost is much less compared to VMware."
"I advise keeping an open mind. It's an excellent solution."
"For the Windows side, we also initiated a digital transformation project, moving a lot of Windows applications to the container side and the open-source software side, which resulted in almost 70% savings of our past expenses."
"We find the ease of use of this solution to be invaluable, as it is user-friendly and integrates well with other software."
"It's a very good platform to build your virtual machines on and highly integrated with Red Hat itself and its satellites."
"The solution is overall very good with all the facilities, it is user friendly, easy to configure, has documentation, and support is available."

Cons

"There are times when consultants, construction, or building firms need to use Beam but it can be difficult."
"Nutanix actually promised to build clouds once they made the new generation moving the clients or the servers on-premises, and that's not working as advertised right now."
"Nutanix AHV Virtualization's price is very high."
"My storage use is doubled; if I am creating a one TB virtual machine then my storage policy will take two TB from my cluster."
"It worked well in the beginning but after using it for some time, we found some limitations in terms of compatibility with other software."
"If we have to opt for a high level of capacity planning and need more analytics—like deciding on new purchases or budgeting, or if we need additional resources in the near future—we need to pay for Prism Central. I would suggest that Nutanix improve a bit on the analytics part of Prism Element so we can calculate those kinds of things within that flavor."
"There is no web interface for AHV."
"VMware does tend to have more features than AHV. It's more of the leader in this space."
"Customers are not aware of this solution, they can improve by providing more awareness and solution availability."
"In comparison to VMware, this solution isn't as stable. We're testing it right now, and we're not trusting the stability of the product."
"This solution could be more secure."
"There is not any proper documentation on the site to reference."
"In comparison to VMware, this solution isn't as stable. We're testing it right now, and we're not trusting the stability of the product."
"Its scalability can be improved. It is not easy to scale, and we hope that Red Hat can provide a more scalable system."
"I have found that the stability is related to the upgrade cycle. I find the cycle a little bit annoying; if the system is constantly upgrading then it is very painful in terms of the operation."
"When we do a direct comparison, then obviously VMware does better in terms of having Fault Tolerance and doing active disaster recovery and these kind of things. This is something that can be improved within Red Hat."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The setup cost for four nodes was about $200,000 (in US currency)."
"Nutanix AHV is low cost."
"The product is costly and comes with an annual subscription."
"I would rate the pricing a three out of five. It is expensive, but it also provides the value for money and performance that you require as a hyperconverged and virtualization software."
"AHV licensing is often included in the Nutanix HCI package."
"Since Broadcom bought VMware, Nutanix also increased its pricing, making the solution expensive."
"We don't have to pay extra for Acropolis because it is built into Nutanix."
"Nutanix AHV costs less than VMware vSphere."
"This is an open-source solution."
