Cortex XDR by Palo Alto Networks Reviews

I have been working as a cybersecurity manager. I focus on implementing cybersecurity solutions for different companies, and I have hands-on experience working with Cortex XDR solution by Palo Alto Networks.

Cortex XDR features advanced threat detection capabilities. The handling GUI allows for advanced searches, rule creation, and local detection. It incorporates AI for normal behavior detection, distinguishing unusual operations. 

These features make the product very effective for threat detection. Additionally, the GUI is user-friendly and the product offers robust AI or normal behavior detection.

I used the product at my previous company until November 2018.

After deploying Traps, we saw the performance of the network improve by 65 to 70 percent. There was a drop in the latency rate over the application, when accessed via our users. We received feedback from users that usually when they were downloading a bunch of things or browsing the Internet, ad popups would spring up which are a gateway to bring viruses and stick in temp files. This improved a lot because Traps occasionally gives an alert to them to be careful, such as don't go on play on this site and download malicious things. The overall performance of the entire organization was improved because of this.

When I was monitoring Traps, during the period after we deployed it fully on our organization, there was around 125 users on it. We could see in a whole day that there was around 10 to 15 threats which kept popping up. Because I work in the hotel industry, we have a lot of emails which come through worldwide. They are for reservations and booking. Out of those 50 emails, five to six emails are malicious emails which have the extension of .exe files or other encrypted files. They could have had macros enabled in those files as well. Traps would alert us to these malicious files.

The network was infected when we were using Traps. One of the reservation computer was infected with ransomware. It was detected by the Traps. In Traps, it shows up that they investigated the file which was in a zip format. We uncompressed it to view the file and saw Traps detected this infection. It does analysis of all the files to an in-depth level, which was helpful for us to detect and avoid that infection being spread around.

Our company uses the solution for endpoint protection, detection, and response. The solution has antivirus and EDR capabilities. Our SOC analysts use it to investigate incidents. We currently have 300 to 400 users with two admins for management. The solution is installed on all user laptops to protect workstations.

We also implement the solution for customers as a service. Most customers buy the solution for registry reasons and compliance standards. It gives you all the compliance points and improves how your SOC functions because it provides comprehensive visibility over the entire network and endpoints. It is called XDR because it not only looks at endpoints but also network traffic. 

The solution is offered on Palo Alto's private network. I think the underlying provider is Google Cloud, but that doesn't really matter. You are asked the region of your instance for connection such as Europe or the Middle East. 

The solution perfectly correlates with Palo Alto's Networks Firewall to perform XDR capabilities such as network traffic plus endpoint security. This is what distinguishes the solution from other products. 

From a single pane of glass, you can easily manage all of your endpoints.

The dashboard is intuitive so you can easily investigate or track incidents. 

The solution has a fair amount of integrations with certain intelligence tools or third-party products. 

Cortex covers everything I need. It's a perfect solution. Cortex provides a different level of visibility because it's an extended EDR, allowing you to grab logs from the network and firewalls. Palo Alto invented the concept of the extended EDR or XDR.

The price could be a little lower. 

I use the solution in my company to protect our clients from unknown malware and threats. We also use the tool in our environment as an antivirus, EDR, and XDR solution.

The solution's most valuable feature is that it protects against unknown malware and activities and offers behavioral threat detection functionalities. With a wildcard and based on whatever configurations, it gives alerts and offers an XDR Quick Scan facility. We get proper results from the tool, and after scanning, we can see them on the dashboard.

Officially, I'm an MSP, but I also host it for our own internal software. I've got XDR installed on 26,000 devices. It is used for threat prevention, policy enforcement, firewall rules, and DLP. We use it for pretty much everything. Our firewalls also integrate with XDR.

We use XDR Pro. It is in the cloud, and we have got version 7 at the moment, which is probably the latest update of it.

The key thing is the visibility of what's going on in our networks and on our end devices. It gives us visibility.

It provides the ability to query. I can query for any file or any IOC on any of the devices installed, and it will search for a data link.

Advanced endpoint protection.

Traps has drastically reduced our endpoint attack surface via advanced detection capabilities, sandboxing of never before seen programs, and by drastically limiting where executables can launch in the first place. We have not had any malware successfully execute on an endpoint since deploying Traps.
