What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No issues. Simple to deploy. The team helped set up the appliance and were quick to help with any custom requests.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No issues yet.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No.

How are customer service and support?

Customer Service:

Very good. Very quick response times.

Technical Support:

Very good. Knowledgeable staff.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

No.

How was the initial setup?

It was fairly straightforward to set up and anything we could not figure out ourselves the team had a solution for us very quickly.

What about the implementation team?

In house/directly with VMTurbo.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is an expensive product so we have only licenced the critical hosts in production. Some of the features may not work if your VMware hosts are not licenced. Features such as DRS will not work unless you have a cluster licenced for DRS in VMware. Therefore the workload placement VMTurbo tries to carry out will not work as the VMs will not migrate.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Yes, vROPS.

Helps us in predicting when a new host will be needed soon.

What is most valuable?

Best feature is the ability to move my virtual machines around automatically to balance out loads on each of our hosts.

How has it helped my organization?

This keeps our hosts optimized at all times and helps us in predicting when a new host will be needed soon.

What needs improvement?

One issue I have is just not knowing how to get some information I believe is there. I have not found any detailed walkthrough of the software and all of its features. I could call and have someone walk me through it, but would rather do this on my own time.

For how long have I used the solution?

3 years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No issues with deployment.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No stability issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

None.

How are customer service and technical support?

Any time we have talked to tech support we have had no issues. Seem to get us the answer we are looking for quickly.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

No previous solution.

What other advice do I have?

We have really loved having VMTurbo. It keeps out workloads spread evenly across multiple hosts and has good analytics.

I know for us it predicted that we could shut off a host in most cases for new servers we add. We have started to get up there and I don't think it predicts that any more but it is a great tool in this regard.

I tend to use the "To Do List" in order to keep my systems efficient.

Valuable Features

The Capacity Planner was invaluable when doing a server consolidation / host migration project. On a daily basis, I tend to use the "To Do List" in order to keep my systems efficient.

Improvements to My Organization

I'm able to work in a more proactive manner and now have less issues to deal with. I'm able to avoid major problems.

Room for Improvement

I'd like to see the creation of custom dashboards become a little more streamlined. I love the concept, but it's the thing I have struggled with the most thus far. I am trying to get dashboards created for application groups, only giving them exposure to certain elements. I can't get as granular as I would like. It also takes several steps in quite a few screens to get things going.

Use of Solution

About 10 months.

Deployment Issues

Deployment and training were both EXCELLENT.

Stability Issues

The system has been stable since day one.

Customer Service and Technical Support

Customer Service:

Every support engineer I have worked with has been friendly, professional and knowledgeable.

Technical Support:

10 of 10

Initial Setup

It was very straightforward - deploy the appliance, add my vCenter Servers and wait for data to populate. Doesn't get much easier than that.

Implementation Team

I implemented the appliance myself with the help of VMTurbo

Pricing, Setup Cost and Licensing

The pricing is competitive and the licensing model is flexible. We knew that we would be significantly reducing our host count over the six months following implementation. There were license options available for this exact type of scenario

Other Solutions Considered

Other Advice

We purchased this product because it was the best that we evaluated. I'm very happy with our choice.

We utilize it to increase our VM density on our VDI clusters.

What is most valuable?

We utilize the Turbonomics product to increase our VM density on our VDI clusters.

How has it helped my organization?

This product has extended the life of our HW and allowed us to get more utilization out of the existing HW before needing to add hosts to the cluster.

What needs improvement?

Would like some better canned reports allowing for average utilization of VMs in the environment during a defined range of hours.

For how long have I used the solution?

2 years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Some minor issues once in a while with versions - remediated quickly with an update.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Fantastic - any time we've had a problem or needed to get a specific set of information out of the tool, they've helped.

Technical Support:

10 out of 10

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

No.

How was the initial setup?

Both, you can do a lot with it out of the box, but you can also get quite advanced with managing the environment.

What about the implementation team?

In House.

Forecasting allows you to forecast and simulate new environments. I can add new hardware, test and predict how our investment will impact our performance.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature for us is the feature which allows Forecasting. Forecasting allows you to forecast and simulate new environments so you can decide what to add to your environment and what won't work. Looking to add Cisco nodes, for example, I can add new hardware and test and predict how our investment will impact our performance.

How has it helped my organization?

The direct impact is that we decided to expand our platform and I needed specific numbers to see how a specific node would impact our environment, we were able to get specific reporting. That’s direct ROI. The feature that allows you to optimize and distribute your loads according to the balance of your “sweet point,” balancing your load against your compute is very valuable for decision making.

What needs improvement?

I think that the interface can use some modernizing and less abrupt transitions. There has already been a good attempt but need to dig deeper.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using the solution for one year.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No, it was great.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No issues with stability.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

They are very responsive.

Technical Support:

They are great - very responsive.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have tried other solution, VCOPS as well as Virtual Instruments. VMTurbo was unique – other products were not as complete a match.

How was the initial setup?

Initial setup was straightforward.

What was our ROI?

Price is a little bit steep – if you have a targeted project, then its worth it, otherwise ongoing costs can be a little steep.

What other advice do I have?

Understand the product and what it does, it falls into a little bit of a luxury tool, know how they approach the problem and you have to know your platform. This is not the kind of thing you buy off the shelf.

The ability to load balance automatically my storage and hosts has saved a lot of time.

What is most valuable?

Automation and planning. Turbonomic's ability to automatically load balance my storage and hosts has saved a lot of time. Planning for a future VDI deployment has allowed us to eliminate the need to scramble for resources during the deploy.

How has it helped my organization?

It has balanced the load on the hosts during the day to eliminate bottlenecks.

What needs improvement?

The user interface has room for improvement, but it is well on its way with the new UI that is being developed.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have had it for over two years now.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Deployment was easy. It was done over an hour long conference call. Had tangible data in place several hours after that.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Had one issue on an early release (first several months of owning Turbonomic), when Turbonomic made a suggestion to resize itself and it changed a few other settings upon a reboot. Since then, no issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No. Have yet to have a need to change the number of hosts in our environment. We have had to replace some older hosts per Turbonomic's suggestion.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Excellent. We talk to our account rep on a regular basis and he walks through our environment and offers other areas for automation as well as new features being added.

Technical Support:

Excellent. For the very few issues we have had, they have been quick to respond and solve the issue.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not have a previous solution that monitored everything. It was all done manually via the vCenter Server. When we purchased Turbonomic (VMturbo at the time), vRealize Operations was just getting going and it was outrageous. Turbonomic offered everything we thought we needed, and even things we didn't know we needed, at a great price.

How was the initial setup?

Very easy. Deploy an OVF template, some minor out-of-the-box configuration, and it is up and going.

What about the implementation team?

We purchased direct, and implementation was done via a WebEx.

What was our ROI?

Hard to put an exact dollar amount on it, but it did eliminate the need for us to add an additional person in our department as it automated most of the work in our VMware environment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Just license what you want to monitor. We have a DR environment which we chose not to monitor.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We checked out vROPs and a Veeam solution, but they just didn't cut it.
