The features most valuable are seeing over allocations and being able to automatically make changes.

What is most valuable?

The features most valuable are seeing over allocations, being able to automatically make changes, and determining how much new VMs would allocate resources.

How has it helped my organization?

Basically if there were issues with our VMs, which account for 95% of our environment, we had to wait until one of the techs would look and react to the issue. We can set up triggers to automatically handle these issues before they get any worse.

What needs improvement?

Like any software I use, I'm looking for the least amount of clicking needed to get to places. If I need to click 10 different windows to get a report, I'm done with the software. This software is very good with this, but there could always be improvements.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using it for about six to eight months now.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Deployment was very easy but I advise reading the manual.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No issue with stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We've had no issues with scalability yet.

How are customer service and support?

Customer Service:

Customer service is very good. They are knowledgeable about the product. If they don't have the answer they will get someone who has it.

Technical Support:

I have no complaints about tech support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I did use something else and I was able to get the information I was looking for. If the data I'm looking for is 15 windows away, there's no way I'm using it.

How was the initial setup?

If you are familiar with the VM product you're using, then setup shouldn't be a problem.

What about the implementation team?

We went through in-house. Their knowledge was very good.

What was our ROI?

Less downtime due to small issues becoming big because we didn't see them. Also, the VMs are running at their optimal performance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing is a little on the high side but you get what you pay for.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I looked at some others but would like not to put names out there. Just know we though this was the best solution.

What other advice do I have?

This is not a set it and forget product. You will have to look at what is going on and have a plan.

Turbonomics resolves the issue with continuous workload placement and sizing recommendations/actions.

What is most valuable?

  • Automatic placement of workload in multi-node VMware cluster.
  • Recommend/perform memory and vCPU configuration to match work load.

How has it helped my organization?

Everyone's sizing guess is wrong.

Turbonomics resolves the issue with continuous workload placement and sizing recommendations/actions.

What needs improvement?

Licensing for clusters with few VMs (i.e. HA focus over consolidation focus).

For how long have I used the solution?

One year.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No, the integration was cake.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No. Very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No. We use if for seven hosts at two sites.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Excellent. We were able to evaluate and implement with full support.

Technical Support:

High.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

No. We just guessed and tried to use PerfMon and VMware performance and user feelings to size and place the workload. Bad.

How was the initial setup?

Just install and hook into vCenter and then understand what it is saying.

We did initially work with pinning workloads between types of VMs but now let all swim in the same pool with a Turbonomic lifeguard.

What about the implementation team?

In-house with input from application vendor.

What was our ROI?

Continuous as the workload placement is automatic as things change.

There was no other solution that actually allowed the execution of its recommendations.

The sophistication of the algorithm is sufficient to not cause imbalance by the execution of balancing. Totally sweet.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is most applicable with clusters that host large numbers of VMs.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

VMware vRealize Operations was reviewed but did not sufficiently automate the process and did not seem to be as sophisticated in its analysis.

What other advice do I have?

This has been a set-it-and-forget-it solution that does a great job but is behind the scenes.

Better than DRS to load balance VMs across hosts.

What is most valuable?

  • Very easy installation.
  • Reports back with recommendations and system health within hours of deployment.

How has it helped my organization?

Better than DRS to load balance VMs across hosts, allowing us to release 30% more computing resources.

What needs improvement?

Had issues trying to get Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V hosts attached to Turbonomic. This required more effort as there are some changes to be made on WMI configurations. No way near as straightforward as VMware vSphere.

For how long have I used the solution?

2 years +

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

VMware - just make sure your infrastructure allows the Turbonomic application to see all your vCenters.

Hyper-V - I tried to test Turbonomic on Hyper-V in a test environment. This was not at straightforward as attaching to a vCenter. It needs various Windows settings changed. Not sure if this has been fixed/made easier in new versions.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

None.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

None. We deployed the appliance two years ago and since then have added four more vCenters (200+ VMs) for it to manage and we have not had to change any settings to do this.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

The support is very good. Very quick responses if you have a support issue.

By using the Green Circle community, you can get answers to real life questions about customised reports, etc.

Technical Support:

Very good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I used vFoglight previously, but this was mainly a reporting tool. Turbonomic manages your infrastructure for you and assists with future planning/provisioning.

How was the initial setup?

Very simple to deploy the appliance, give it an IP address and then after logging in, attached it to your vCenters....simple!

What about the implementation team?

In-house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Reasonable costs based on a per socket license model.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

vFoglight, Solarwinds Virtual Manager, Cibra.

What other advice do I have?

Easier integration with Hyper-V hosts/clusters would be nice. Not sure if newer versions have been able to improve this.

Getting the numerous VMs properly sized has saved a fair bit in hardware and licensing costs

What is most valuable?

Reports on recommended right-sizing for VMs.

How has it helped my organization?

Getting the numerous VMs properly sized has saved a fair bit in hardware and licensing costs.

What needs improvement?

The UI needs to be finally and fully moved to pure HTML5 and NOT flash.

They are transitioning the UI to HTML5, but the GA release (as far as I know), is still in flash.

For how long have I used the solution?

Two years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

WhatsUp Gold, though it is not really the same thing.

How was the initial setup?

Very straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

In-house.

What was our ROI?

Seven months

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

What other advice do I have?

VMTurbo is unique in its approach to resource usage tracking and recommendations based on it. There is no other tool I have found that can do what it does the way it does it. Highly recommended.

Automatic Equilibrium using real-world metrics and dynamically balancing workloads while adding new applications into the environment.

What is most valuable?

Automatic Equilibrium using real-world metrics and dynamically balancing workloads while adding new applications into the environment.

How has it helped my organization?

It has allowed me to manage over 19 sites with one person after losing two supporting staff members without a negative impact on operations.

What needs improvement?

I would love more training and certification opportunities.

For how long have I used the solution?

Over 2 years without issue.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Best deployment of an application I have seen yet. Import OVA, assign basic network resources and use an admin account to find balance in the datacenter.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The OVA provides great tools for backup and import but in operation I have not had a unit fail on me and reboots have resolved most of my operational issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

None

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Excellent. Very involved and positive experience with all members at Turbonomics!

Technical Support:

Excellent. Super humble, very helpful.

I felt like a tourist talking to NASA engineers in terms of skill level.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Cost and recurring license costs did not make sense with other solutions when I POC'd solutions in the real-world. Everything else required more people, expertise, or money for less function.

How was the initial setup?

Unit was up and running in 5 minutes. All I needed was basic networking information and admin accounts

What about the implementation team?

In-house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Compare it to other solutions and you will find that the equilibrium equation is not available with other solutions. I feel this tool is the equivalent of two engineers under me .

Monthly reporting is more detailed now and we can see where improvements can be made within the environment

What is our primary use case?

Turbonomic keeps our cluster balanced and VMs running optimally. It shows us where in our environment that resources can be recovered as well as when extra is needed.

How has it helped my organization?

Monthly reporting is more detailed now and we can see where improvements can be made within the environment.

What is most valuable?

The ability to automate moving of VMs, Capacity Planning and Reporting have been invaluable to our monthly reporting.

What needs improvement?

None at the moment.  The product is improving with each release and the new HTML5 interface is great.  Would like to see the ability to move custom dashboards from the old interface to the new as that is not possible right now.

For how long have I used the solution?

Three to five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Product has been very stable and updating works very well.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No issues with scalability as the VM when deployed is provisioned well for your environment.

Customer Service/Sales I would rate as 10 out of 10. Sales was tremendous in helping me sell the solution to Management for purchasing.

Technical Support:

Technical Support has not been engaged as of yet.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Other solutions were evaluated during this time, but nothing was being used.

How was the initial setup?

What about the implementation team?

It was implemented in-house by myself.

What was our ROI?

ROI will be approximately six months once we receive our license for the full product.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Contact Sales about pricing and licensing as they will work with you on the best solution.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Yes, other solutions were evaluated: vCOPS, Uila, and Opvizor.

Nice review. We too use Turbonomic in our environment for automation machine moves mainly. I also use it extensively for the Planning module when projects come up requiring more VM additions to the environment. It let's me see a report in minutes versus days with the old spreadsheet method. Great product and support all around.
