The use cases were centered on microservices within the context of BNP Paribas. This was primarily due to the adoption of microservices and the hybrid cloud environment. The goal was to establish precise control over external network connections.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I have not worked with the solution directly, so I can’t comment on this aspect.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It scales effectively. To the best of my knowledge, we did not face any problems, despite having a large installation base. We did not encounter issues while expanding the project.
How was the initial setup?
The deployment itself was quite straightforward. It took at least one year.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend this solution and rate it 9 out of 10.

Great auto policy writing and good mapping with an easy setup process
Pros and Cons
- "The Explorer allows you to know the traffic between source and destination."
- "Everything is valuable in Illumio."
- "The customer service is lagging a bit. It could be better."
- "Technical support could be better. When we get a reply from support engineers, it is not kind or empathetic."
What is our primary use case?
It's really good for avoiding and controlling lateral movement. Since everywhere there is ransomware, it's very good for micro-segmentation so that we can allow what is required for application-to-application communication. We are allowing what is required and blocking all unnecessary traffic, so that, in that way, we can control the attack surface, so we can reduce the attack surface. We're trying to secure the application and the company network as well.
How has it helped my organization?
We use it to write a policy for all the infrastructure-related servers manually. It will detect the infrastructure flows, and it will advise you automatically that you need to allow the traffic or block it. It'll use access just from the previous flows.
What is most valuable?
Everything is valuable in Illumio. We love the product.
The auto policy writing is great. The feature will give you the option of the inbound-outbound traffic.
The Explorer allows you to know the traffic between source and destination.
We have a feature called parallel coordinates. There, we can see what application is talking to which application and where a single application is talking to many applications.
The illumination definitely stands out. Mapping is great. The application group mapping is useful.
It's straightforward to set up.
What needs improvement?
Every month, we're getting new features. It's always improving. I don't see a place where it is weak or lacking in development.
The customer service is lagging a bit. It could be better.
We'd like labeling to be better. For example, if someone, by mistake, if he edits that labeling part, it should give you a warning pop-up to the effect of "Are sure to edit this enforced application?" so that person immediately will know that this is the enforced application and he should not touch that application labeling.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've used the solution for more than one and a half years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability is good. It's reliable. There aren't bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is a very scalable product. Expanding is not a problem.
We have about 15 users on the solution. They are mostly engineers as well as two analysts and one product owner.
We do plan to increase usage.
How are customer service and support?
Technical support could be better. When we get a reply from support engineers, it is not kind or empathetic. They also delay some responses - sometimes, not always. Maybe it depends from engineer to engineer. They could be a lot better, a lot more helpful.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We did not use anything previously. This is really the best product.
We have a Nebule product - a Nebule cloud, a Nebule solution that is LSDX, a VMware LSDX. That is also in place, along with Illumio. It is not yet live. We are focusing on Illumio for on-prem. Once it moves to the cloud, we have been considering both Illumio and LSDX.
How was the initial setup?
The initial implementation is simple. It's not complex.
I was not there during the initial setup, however, the deployment might have taken about there months or so. That included the approvals and the entire setup process.
In terms of deployment and maintenance, it all depends on how many applications you're going to onboard. It's not a straight answer. It all depends on the amount of work you are doing in your organization.
What about the implementation team?
There were people to help us from Illumio Professional Services Consultant, so we didn't find it hard to set up in our environment. For the most part, we handled the setup in-house.
What was our ROI?
It's too early to really account for an ROI. We still need time with the product. We are seeing value in the product, however.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I'm just an engineer. I don't deal with the licensing aspect of the product.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We looked at a few other options, for example, Guardicore. There were a couple that we examined. We might have also looked at Cisco.
What other advice do I have?
Right now, we are using a non-production, 21.2.3 version. In production, we are in 19.3.6, which we are going for an upgrade on the weekend, which will be 21.2.30.
Right now, the deployment is on-premises. The roadmap is to go to a SaaS product with Illumio, however, right now, it's on-premises. It is being used for on-premises, however, we are thinking to make use of the cloud as well, using the CloudSecure product.
We like the solution. It's light. It doesn't take too many resources. For anyone to implement the product, it's pretty straightforward and simple. It's also very effective. It's very quick and very flexible to implement. That's the thing I can advise - just to implement this product and try it out.
I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Helps block ransomware attacks and provides visibility into applications and network protocols
Pros and Cons
- "The product provides visibility into how the applications communicate and how the network protocols are being used."
- "The product’s agents don't work very well in OT environments."
What is our primary use case?
The primary use case is micro-segmentation. It enables network visibility, allowing you to understand how your applications work and the various communication channels they require. Based on this information, you can determine what is allowed and not allowed on your network based on your policy. The use cases also depend on our client’s needs.
What is most valuable?
Visibility is the most valuable feature of the solution. The product provides visibility into how the applications communicate and how the network protocols are being used. We can also block protocols such as RDP, NetBIOS, and ransomware attacks.
What needs improvement?
The product’s agents don't work very well in OT environments. It could include environments with manufacturing sensors or other devices where installing the agent may not be possible. We don't have the same visibility and flexibility that we have on our computer or server.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using the solution for two years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability is good. We are using the SaaS option.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I haven’t faced any scalability issues. We can extend the solution to the cloud.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is easygoing. There are complexities, but the product is very good. Once we get a good baseline and discover things we do not want, we can start blocking and micro-segmenting.
What about the implementation team?
The engineers do the updates. Once the agent is installed, you can auto-update the tool when a new release is available.
What other advice do I have?
Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.

Good flexibility and excellent scalability with good technical and informational guides
Pros and Cons
- "The flexibility of the solution is its most valuable feature."
- "The flexibility of the solution is its most valuable feature."
- "The interaction we've had with the support team hasn't been ideal. Technical support should be improved."
- "So far, we haven't been too satisfied with the assistance they've provided."
What is our primary use case?
We've had to implement the infrastructure. In fact, we are changing over to FortiGate's VMX security solution.
What is most valuable?
The flexibility of the solution is its most valuable feature.
The ability to operate inside the real technology has been excellent.
The solution's concepts are quite simple.
What needs improvement?
The interaction we've had with the support team hasn't been ideal. Technical support should be improved.
The solution needs to better integrate before we are able to deploy. It would be helpful if we could deploy the solution even if there are difficulties with integrations or other conflicts.
For how long have I used the solution?
We started studying the solution about one and a half years ago.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We're currently tuning the stability right now. It's not ideal.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability of the solution is excellent.
How are customer service and technical support?
We've contacted technical support and are currently working with a professional right now for a couple of days each month. So far, we haven't been too satisfied with the assistance they've provided. I'd rate them as okay. Sometimes we are required to wait for a resolution. It can take a while to get a response. We need a special environment, and it takes them time to help us which can be frustrating.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup of the solution was complex, but not on the side of the organization. The rollout of the core was difficult and we had to extract it and pass it to a technical team.
Deployment took over a year. We went through a lot of applications. There were 22,000 for our team.
What about the implementation team?
We had the assistance of a consultant during the initial setup and we were satisfied with their level of service.
What other advice do I have?
We have a full partnership with Illumino.
I was in charge of the program to raise the adoption of the technology within our organization. We're using the latest version of the solution and the private cloud deployment model. The version we are using is either version 18 or 19. We are also using some legacy products as well.
I'd recommend that those considering implementing the solution go ahead and try it out. Just use it and don't be afraid to test it out.
I'd rate the solution eight out of ten. It's a good product with good technical and informational guides. However, the amount of vulnerabilities we've come across is surprising.
