Bring Windows Azure to your datacenter
How about having the Windows Azure experience locally on your datacentre?
Microsoft is now enabling Hosting Service Providers to use Windows Server 2012 and System Center 2012 to deliver the same great experiences already found in Windows Azure.
The first two of these finished services are high density website hosting and virtual machine provisioning and management. Hosting Service Providers enable these modules through the new Service Management API and optional portal.
Create high scale WebSites – Out of the box automation lowers customer onboarding costs while metering and throttling of resources can help tailor customer offerings. Supports many frameworks including ASP.NET, Classic ASP, PHP and Node.js with full Git integration for Source Code Control. Download and install the Web Sites service on machines dedicated for the Web Sites roles.
Create Virtual Machines – Leverage the power of System Center and Windows Server to easily create an Infrastructure as a Service solution for customers to provision and manage VMs. Download the System Center 2012 SP1 and install and configure SPF per the deployment guide.
Administer WebSites – Administer Web Sites and Virtual Machine services on Windows Server while also offering customers the same Windows 8-style self-service user experience as found on Windows Azure to provision and manage their Web Sites and Virtual Machines. Download the Service Management Portal and Service Management API Express bits to install the Admin and Tenant portals, and the Service Management API on one machine.Download the WebPI and click on the Products tab. Select Windows Azure to deploy the portals and the Service Management API on separate machines.

What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
Azure is good because it is a Microsoft product.
What needs improvement?
I would like it if Microsoft communicated better about upcoming changes before they roll them out. Sometimes when Microsoft implements changes, they don't notify the users promptly enough. I would like to know about new features, especially Office 365.

Technical Architect at a tech services company with 10,001+ employees
It gives you the power to process lots of data, but it could be integrated better with other solutions
Pros and Cons
- "Databricks is really nice because you have the power to process lots of data and you can create queries and provide big analysis for the business using a robust cluster."
- "Maybe Azure could add an address code to create your analysis without SQL or Python because some business users don't want it to code. So it's good to have a service application that connects to the data lake to conduct analysis and simplify the business process."
What is our primary use case?
I was working on a project with a Czech company related to big data architecture and Databricks. The main goal was to provide a robust architecture to create data lakes with Databricks and Data Warehouse, provide self-service to the business area, etc. And I have experience with SAP as well. So one of our systems connects to create the ETL to load all the data to the data lake and other data businesses like Oracle, SQL, etc.
What is most valuable?
Databricks is really nice because you have the power to process lots of data and you can create queries and provide big analysis for the business using a robust cluster.
What needs improvement?
Maybe Azure could add an address code to create your analysis without SQL or Python because some business users don't want it to code. So it's good to have a service application that connects to the data lake to conduct analysis and simplify the business process.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using Microsoft Azure since 2018.
What other advice do I have?
I rate Azure seven out of 10. It's really good, but maybe it's missing some features or some integration so it can work better with non-Microsoft applications.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Hybrid Cloud
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
Microsoft Azure

Good cost management and billing, simple UI, but needs better alerts management and VPN
Pros and Cons
- "The management part of it is good. Its UI is simple to use. The cost management and billing part is also good. These are the top things that I like in Azure."
- "The alerts management should be improved. Alerts management is very complicated to configure. You have to go through a lot of tests and config action groups to set up those things. It is very complicated, and it can be simplified."
What is our primary use case?
I am a Microsoft-certified Azure Admin. I manage Azure infrastructure as well as AWS infrastructure.
What is most valuable?
The management part of it is good. Its UI is simple to use. The cost management and billing part is also good. These are the top things that I like in Azure.
What needs improvement?
The alerts management should be improved. Alerts management is very complicated to configure. You have to go through a lot of tests and config action groups to set up those things. It is very complicated, and it can be simplified.
It is good to start with, but as the complexity increases, the usability needs to improve. We are managing only 40 virtual machines, so we are able to make use of the portal.
The VPN part can also be improved. If you want to set up multi-factor authentication for VPN clients, it is not so easy. The documentation is not so simple for multi-factor authentication.
I would like to see Azure Data Factory simplified. It is very complex. If they can simplify the data integration part inside Azure, it would be great. They should design simpler integration. They can also have a new service and keep Data Factory as it is.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Microsoft Azure for close to five years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
A few years ago, it was unstable, but I've not seen any issues off late. A lot of new features are being added to Microsoft Azure, but I have not seen any stability issues.
The old services are stable. We recently saw a security issue published online. So, the new services might be less stable, but I wouldn't say it is not stable.
How are customer service and technical support?
I manage that part. Getting support is very painful because tickets get assigned to different countries. People are in different time zones, which is clearly complicated. Each service is managed by different teams situated in different countries, and synchronizing with them is pretty complicated.
How was the initial setup?
It was straightforward.
What other advice do I have?
It is good for a person who is trying it for the first time. There are some solutions, such as CSP, for which they provide direct support. There are some ways to minimize the complexity. You should go through a party that can provide this kind of knowledge before you decide on it.
I would rate Microsoft Azure a seven out of 10.

cloud solution architect at a tech services company with 1,001-5,000 employees
Reliable, scalable, and has good support
Pros and Cons
- "I like the familiarity of this solution."
- "The initial setup could be simplified."
What is our primary use case?
We are CSP distributors. We are indirect resellers.
What is most valuable?
I like the familiarity of this solution.
What needs improvement?
No product is perfect, there is always room for improvement.
The solution to the market and the guidance for the customer should be streamlined.
From a customer perspective, it can be complex. It's a bit abstract for the customer.
They need to provide comprehensive and easy-to-understand guidelines for the customers to implement.
The initial setup could be simplified.
The customization could be improved.
I would like things to be easy for the customers and partners.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Microsoft Azure for five years. I am a Microsoft engineer. It was my first job, and I have used it throughout the years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Microsoft Azure is very stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It's a very scalable product.
How are customer service and technical support?
We like the technical support.
How was the initial setup?
It can be complex when you deploy it on your own.
I have studied it, for me it was easy, but for our customers, it could be simplified. We want to make their lives easier.
What about the implementation team?
Customers will need the help of an integrator or consultant.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Customers need to purchase additional services because of the complexity of it.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend this solution to others.
I would rate Microsoft Azure a nine out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Hybrid Cloud
Disclosure: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer:
Software Engineer at a tech services company with 1,001-5,000 employees
Offers secure network access, with excellent app services feature
Pros and Cons
- "Offers many data security features including securing network access."
- "The cost management and billing section features could be improved."
What is our primary use case?
The solution comes with multiple features, including managing resources and creating a virtual machine. We have the possibility to create a virtual machine depending on the type of storage we want and the hardware configuration we want. We also use it to manage our code base because it comes with all the ICT features to allow continuous integration and so on. We are customers of Microsoft Azure.
What is most valuable?
The solution offers many data security features including securing network access, and the portal is user friendly with a dashboard that makes it easy to find what you're looking for. I'd say the app services feature is great, and they provide free training on how to use that. They provide highly detailed documentation. The dashboard comes with a monitoring section so you can set up alerts for your budget, for example, and it will provide you with some metrics on how it's performing. In general, it's very user friendly.
What needs improvement?
I believe the cost management and billing section features could be improved because sometimes it may seem somewhat complicated to find certain settings to set up a threshold for resource consumption and track expenses in real-time.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using this solution for more than a year.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Microsoft is well known for its scalability and stability, and this solution provides both. We have more than 50 users in the company. As a software developer, I'm happy with where it's at right now, but if the company is planning to increase use, that would be a good idea. As a developer, whenever I need to create a virtual machine or make use of Azure resources, I can easily do that.
How are customer service and technical support?
Technical support is very good and responsive.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was straightforward because it was linked to our Microsoft account and it's just a question of activating your subscription. They have some training videos and their help and support is very responsive. I've contacted them multiple times on some problems and they were very helpful. I've also used their chat-bot feature and if that doesn't help, you get passed to human support.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I think licensing is pay as you go because you have a monthly budget assigned to your account and depending on which services are running, it's consumed from that budget.
What other advice do I have?
I would definitely recommend Azure because it's an enterprise trade cloud platform and can provide valuable insights of your data and of metrics of data sources in real time. It's totally secure, comes with support and numerous code development languages enabling scaling as you go.
I rate this solution an eight out of 10.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Public Cloud
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

CTO at a tech services company with 501-1,000 employees
Very scalable, easy to use, and provides a great ROI, but needs better pricing model, better support, and a cybersecurity feature
Pros and Cons
- "It is really scalable and easy to use."
- "They should include a cybersecurity feature to improve the protection of the systems. They could do better in terms of the pricing model. Its price keeps on changing. Their technical support can also be better."
What is our primary use case?
We use it for cloud adoption for medium and large companies. We are using its latest version.
What is most valuable?
It is really scalable and easy to use.
What needs improvement?
They should include a cybersecurity feature to improve the protection of the systems.
They could do better in terms of the pricing model. Its price keeps on changing. Their technical support can also be better.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with this solution for a couple of years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is stable, and it works. It is not the best public cloud in terms of technology, but it does its job, and it does it well.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is really scalable.
How are customer service and technical support?
Their technical support is fair. It is something they can improve.
How was the initial setup?
Its initial setup is very easy.
What was our ROI?
It provides a great ROI.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Its pricing model can be improved. It is variable, and if you do a simulation now, within a few months, the price can change, and your simulation would no longer be valid.
What other advice do I have?
It is great for a new workload and if you are starting with new systems.
I would rate Microsoft Azure a seven out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Public Cloud
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Managing Director at a computer software company with 51-200 employees
A stable and easy-to-use cloud computing platform
Pros and Cons
- "It's stable, easy to use, reliable, and cheap."
What is our primary use case?
It's cloud computing. It's just an alternative to buying physical servers and storage.
Within our organization, there are roughly 2,000 employees using this solution. We definitely plan to keep using this solution in the future.
What is most valuable?
It's stable, easy to use, reliable, and cheap.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Microsoft Azure for the past few years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
This solution is very stable.
How are customer service and technical support?
Technical support is pretty good. I think they're doing pretty well.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We used to use Amazon AWS.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is very straightforward. It only takes minutes because it's cloud provisioning.
What about the implementation team?
I installed this solution myself along with the help of three technical team members.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The price needs to be lower because they're competing with AWS. AWS, price-wise, is sexier. In this case, Azure needs to do better in terms of pricing.
We are on a subscription; we pay on a monthly basis. It's consumption-based, so the price varies depending on usage.
What other advice do I have?
Overall, on a scale from one to ten, I would give this solution a rating of eight. I am satisfied with Microsoft Azure.
I would absolutely recommend this solution to others.
