A stable solution with easy installation and good technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is stable, which is why I have been using it for at least ten years, if not much longer."
  • "It would be very helpful if a significant reduction in overhead could be brought about."

What is our primary use case?

We use the latest version.

The solution is useful for protection of one's personal and business information.

What needs improvement?

As a general rule, I find many of the antivirus solutions to be intrusive when running. They consume a sizable amount of memory resources while they are loading. When it comes to working on one's laptop or desktop, many of these processes, initially, run when a machine boots up - something which prevents a person from accessing his mail or quickly accessing his work. It would be very helpful if a significant reduction in overhead could be brought about. Other than this, I would rate them as fairly good from a protection standpoint.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using McAfee MOVE AntiVirus for at least the last ten years, although I believe I have been using it for much longer.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable, which is why I have been using it for at least ten years, if not much longer.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support comes without charge. As a general rule, when it comes to companies, IT divisions provide support for the teams. They handle this on their own and tend to get patches from the support teams. When it comes to personal use, I feel they have fairly good updates. There are automated updates.

How was the initial setup?

The installation is fairly good and straightforward.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Our subscription is yearly.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend the solution to others.

I rate McAfee MOVE Antivirus as an eight out of ten.

Synchronizes security across the security fabric and has the ability to integrate with other vendors
Pros and Cons
  • "McAfee synchronizes security across the security fabric."
  • "They could try to introduce advanced threat detection."

What is our primary use case?

I have been using this solution for six months. We use the private on-prem deployment model. Our primary use case is for clients who have big environments. For VDIs it's a nightmare to install security software to all of the VMs. It's a bottleneck for resource consumption and highers the data consumption costs. For example, let's say we have 1,000 VMs and we want to scan all of them with an agent-based solution, it eats up a lot of resources. A company offers agentless solutions, they prepare a VM and they scan the VMs without installing an agent. That VM will take care of the scan. McAfee MOVE minimizes a lot of the overhead.

What is most valuable?

Sophos only provides signature-based scanning, a basic antivirus. It is not enough for an advanced attack or advanced threat. It's weak. McAfee can integrate with the existing fabric. I really like this aspect. It enables all of the security parts to talk to each other. McAfee synchronizes security across the security fabric. They cross communicate. This is one aspect that is a huge gap with other security products. McAfee minimizes the threats.

What needs improvement?

They could try to introduce advanced threat detection. This could be a huge improvement because some customers don't want to buy the entire McAfee product. It should product from unknown threats as well.

I would like to ability to mitigate advanced threats. It should be a bit stronger.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's fairly stable. It's used a lot.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's pretty scalable. It has a module architecture.

How are customer service and technical support?

Their technical support is generally responsive and has good resolutions for issues. They respond quickly.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I am very familiar with Sophos.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup complexity will depend on your deployment model. There is an agent-based or a non-agent based deployment with integrates with VMware NSX.

The deployment can take around an hour and configuring it also doesn't take much time. Any agent-based solution can take some time. The non-agent based one will only take a few hours. It really varies on the environment.

What other advice do I have?

Take a look at the other McAfee products. It integrates with other products and vendors which is unique to other vendors. No vendor is perfect in security and no vendor can provide a solution to all security problems. Having this ability is revolutionary. It enables you to combine the best of each vendor. McAfee is the way to go for threat intelligence.

I would rate McAfee MOVE an eight out of ten.

Great features including real-time memory scan and endpoint protection
Pros and Cons
  • "Everything can be combined from the endpoint and server infrastructure security perspective."
  • "It requires deployment of multiple agents for multiple jobs which is unnecessary."

What is our primary use case?

We are partners with McAfee and I'm a senior solution architect.

What is most valuable?

McAfee not only provides the antivirus, but they provide an EDR kind of solution which makes it possible for there to be zero attacks. That scenario certainly helps customers - everything can be combined in a single pane of glass from the endpoint and the server infrastructure security perspective. I like that the solution consumes less of what it stores on endpoints. When it's performing a full-system scan, it consumes less CPU and memory resources, so a user can continue working and not be aware the scanning is occurring. It also supports the real-time memory scan, protecting the user from the real-time product and from any kind of EXE file or monitoring activity. I think the endpoint protection is a very nice feature of this product. McAfee has a more simplified approach to providing security for endpoints.

What needs improvement?

This solution requires you to deploy multiple agents for multiple jobs which is unfortunate. There is the antivirus, there is a DLP client, there is a media client. I'd like to see all of these combined into a single agent that does everything without consuming significant resources. That would be a great innovation from the endpoint security point of view. Rather than having different tools, the DLP DR should be integrated and simplified into one single security solution.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for a couple of months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable. In general, it requires admin resources and user resources.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup requires a certain skill set because anyone wanting to deploy such a tool needs to be aware of the best practices in terms of how the security should be designed, areas such as data configuration and product configuration. A simple antivirus installation should only take a couple of minutes but when it comes to the enterprise grade or installation on a server, it takes time because a lot of planning is required. The planning takes time, not the installation.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There is a one-year or three-year licensing option.

What other advice do I have?

I rate this solution an eight out of 10.

Secure, scalable, and stable
Pros and Cons
  • "It's my understanding that the initial setup isn't too difficult."
  • "The solution could be more secure."

What is our primary use case?

I primarily use the solution in order to protect my personal information.

Every once in a while, I get a message saying that the solution has completed a scan and no threats have been found. I'm not sure if it's my Microsoft antivirus or if it is McAfee, however, sometimes when I try to access a website, there's a message that says it's not safe to view the website and attackers might be trying to view the data. I'm not sure which one is doing it. McAfee or Microsoft, however, I do get these messages sometimes.

What is most valuable?

The solution is scalable.

The stability is good.

It's my understanding that the initial setup isn't too difficult.

Overall, the security is pretty good and I've been kept safe from viruses and dangerous websites.

What needs improvement?

The solution could be more secure.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution since I got my laptop, which was about four years ago now. It's been a while.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product has been very stable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. Its performance is reliable so far.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

While it's my understanding that the solution can scale, I only use it for myself at this time. I don't have plans to expand it beyond personal use.

How are customer service and technical support?

I've never had a need to reach out to technical support. There haven't been any issues with the product. Therefore, I can't speak to how helpful or responsive they are.

How was the initial setup?

I can't speak to the process surrounding the initial implementation and deployment. It was already there. It just came with the laptop. I don't remember the setup process, however, it must have been fairly easy to do it if I have it on the laptop.

What about the implementation team?

I can't speak to if there was a vendor team used to deploy the product as it was just on my laptop when I received it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

You do have to pay for a license. You need to renew it yearly.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I didn't evaluate any other antivirus options. This is the only product I really know.

What other advice do I have?

I am still using the solution. I get messages saying I have to reactivate it, however, I have not done that.

I'm not sure which version of the solution I'm using. Currently, I just use it myself, for personal protection. I'm an end-user and customer.

I'd rate the solution at an eight out of ten at this time. It's been very good in terms of its capabilities so far.

I would recommend it to other users and companies.

Detects and deletes known malware and the DLP
Pros and Cons
  • "The features that I have found most valuable are its ability to detect and delete known malware and the DLP in particular."
  • "They could improve the monitoring and classification of the data features."

What is our primary use case?

We use McAfee MOVE AntiVirus for a number of things - the normal endpoint firewall, DLP, solidcore, and more. We have a solution that is at the server. Then we have super agents at the branches, because we are a bank. We use McAfee Data Exchange Layer. We use also use McAfee Endpoint Security. We have all the models that come under McAfee Endpoint Security.

What is most valuable?

The features that I have found most valuable are its ability to detect and delete known malware and the DLP in particular - that's to protect data loss to USB devices.

What needs improvement?

We are currently doing a project where we need assistance on the File Integrity Monitoring feature for McAfee as well as the ability to do classification of data. That feature is there for data protection. We need help to implement it properly.

They could improve the monitoring and classification of the data features.

Additionally, I want to experience the EDR of McAfee. Basically, EDR is the most potent threat now, that's the major concern for a lot of people. This is what is called the file-less attacks. Processes that run in memory, traditional antivirus software are not able to detect that. So the EDR feature has been made to provide the defense mechanism for the endpoint. Those processes can be stopped from running in memory once they are seen as malicious. That's what I understand EDR does. So I want to experience the EDR feature for McAfee to see how that compares with what we are currently using.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using McAfee for more than 10 years.

We have a local vendor that supports us.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product is stable. It has worked for us over the years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

As I mentioned, we have this architecture of super agents across network branches. That's what we have done to ensure that, with respect to boundary constraints, only super agents pick up updates from the head office and distribute to the branches.

As a matter of fact, we've only done the deployment to a Microsoft environment. None for Linux or Unix. We haven't done any McAfee for Linux or Unix.

We can still improve on scalability. In fact, some of these things, also depend on other factors and not necessarily on the product. It's very important to put this thing in perspective. The operating environment challenges can also affect how scalable things can be. It's not necessary on the product.

I don't blame the scalability on the product, I am also looking at the operating environment.

I would rate the scalability a six or seven.

How are customer service and technical support?

We are quite satisfied with customer support. We had a challenge about two years ago when we were not getting enough support. But the partner has been able to resolve that now.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We do have other anti-malware tools. That's because of the decision we made some time ago for file-less attack scenarios. Because we didn't have McAfee's EDR feature at the time we had to go for another product, specifically for EDR. We are thinking of evaluating EDR for McAfee sometime in the future to see whether we can consolidate our endpoint protection with only McAfee. So there's room for McAfee to evaluate EDR. That's the only feature that we don't have.

In the past we tried ESET. I will say that McAfee happens to be a better product for us. Based on experience, if I'm comparing McAfee to ESET, I prefer McAfee.

How was the initial setup?

McAfee is not that easy, you need to be trained. But because we have an agreement with the vendor that supports us, they provide technical support and assistance to us anytime we need help for any kind of deployment. That's the arrangement that we have.

Deployment took about a month or so.

What about the implementation team?

Going forward, we are trying to convince the vendor to give our in-house staff training to build some level of competence, which hasn't happened yet. That will be one of our medium-term or short-term goals.

We had different experiences. We have other challenges that affect our ability to deploy, which are internal challenges. Typically, deploying the solution should not be that difficult. It's all about getting the right resources to get a deployment done. It's not much of a big deal. It's all about our own internal challenges that we have to overcome.

What other advice do I have?

McAfee is known to be one of the best anti-malware products out there. We are aware of what's happening in the industry.

The only advice I would give is to ensure there's a proper business arrangement in terms of the support. If there is no support from the vendor deploying the solution, then they must enforce training and knowledge transfer during the project implementation period so that there can be in-house support. Otherwise, they should have a kind of agreement that can confirm that the vendors can support them after deploying the solution.

On a scale of one to ten, I would rate McAfee MOVE AntiVirus an eight.
