Good backup solution but challenges with the stability
It is recommended that people know what they are starting with. A part of our challenge was we bought and needed to implement it. So by the time we went to implement it, we were running into support issues. Also, make a market comparison to ensure that the product you choose is what you want to end up with. I would give it a six out of ten because restoring from a backup takes longer than usual. It should happen in a matter of hours, not a matter of days. We are yet to have an experience when trying to restore from Acronis that we haven't had to wait at least a couple of days for our server to be available for testing or working.

Efficient data recovery and replication features
There is a big change in Veritas. In the past, we could easily change servers or appliances and continue working by restoring the catalog. We could change servers from Linux to Linux or Linux to Solaris and perform catalog restores to continue working. But with the new version, we are forced to engage Veritas' professional services, which is too expensive. Sometimes, we've received quotes exceeding $100,000 for a catalog migration. This expense was unnecessary in the past. For instance, we used to install a new release of Linux and simply restore the catalog, and the system would function well. But with the latest version, it's no longer feasible. For instance, if we want to migrate from appliance 5030 to 5060 or even just 5050, we are compelled to engage Veritas consultants due to the intricate data manipulation involved. This additional expense is quite expensive. In the past, these devices didn't even exist, and we could easily restore the catalog, resulting in a fully functional system. However, the new version demands expensive expertise for such tasks, which I find unacceptable for our clients.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Acronis Backup is easy to use."
"Acronis Backup is easy to use, intuitive, and has high performance."
"I can encrypt the data, I can make it send me an email if it fails. It lets me choose which files I want to ignore during backup."
"The web-based interface makes it easy to use."
"The most valuable features of Acronis Backup are instant restore, antivirus, and ransomware protection. Additionally, the documentation is good."
"The setup is very easy."
"In terms of system-critical support, Acronis' technical support does really well. I would give them an eight out of ten for that."
"I would definitely say the backup and recovery. It used to be a separate module. It was a recovery part and it would literally duplicate the machine to bare bones."
"Veritas NetBackup is very user-friendly and has some good quick recovery features."
"Veritas NetBackup is a reliable, easy-to-use, and easy-to-deploy solution."
"I like that it's enterprise-capable. It can handle multiple operating systems. It can handle multiple database types. It can handle a lot of different backup use cases. It's flexible."
"The most valuable feature is replication because, using NetBackup replication, we can have disaster recovery of the data we have."
"The solution offers very good storage efficiency, so there's excellent compression and deduplication within the product that our clients really appreciate."
"It is important, when we chose a solution, that the customer service/technical support team could help us when we needed it, but the support was good."
"The backup and restoration are 100 percent guaranteed."
"I have found the Media Server Deduplication tool, deployment policies, and agentless features to be the most valuable features."

Cons

"When I first started using Acronis, I found it a little bit confusing when it came to the configuration."
"This might be a lack of understanding on my part, but it's difficult to purge old backups."
"It supports Microsoft SQL and Microsoft Exchange, but it does not support Oracle databases or Postgres."
"If I could create a protected image backup on a computer partition that just would be just for the image backup; and only the program could access it to prevent viruses from getting into it. That would be very, very good."
"There are a lot of products out there that are a little bit stronger than Acronis where AV is concerned."
"The support and documentation must be improved."
"Some of the default settings out-of-the-box should already be set up for the novice user. For instance, the warnings that say a hard drive has bad sectors and stops the backup from performing."
"In some cases, at the time of reinstallation, some disasters happen. For the licensing on the computer the name of the computer and domain, everything is removed from the registry level. Then we have to install the Acronis from the start for it to work properly. Otherwise, the Acronis software will cause a lot of trouble at the time of reinstallation. That's where they need to improve the product. In the case people want to install the same software with the same hardware, it should not stop me."
"We are looking forward to testing a feature that promises to allow us to host a workload directly from the backup appliance without rehydrating any items."
"The restore tool is not friendly to newcomers."
"The database integration could be better."
"You cannot tell what your costs are going to be by using the dashboard, which is something that should be improved."
"The product needs to improve its GUI. It needs to make use of a web interface."
"DDBoost."
"Maybe they could add more cloud solutions."
"It should be able to integrate with the cloud. If we leverage a cloud in the future for backup, there should be very fast help and more options for customers to choose from."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I would describe the product as a mid-priced tool for small and medium businesses."
"I would rate the solution’s pricing an eight out of ten. The tool’s subscription is yearly."
"The pricing model is a little complex to find the right size for what you need. It takes a lot of hours to figure it out."
"This is an affordable product and fits within our customers' budgets."
"When it comes to elements like cost, I think it is the only backup solution which has perpetual licenses, whereby you buy the license once and for all."
"We pay a yearly subscription fee and the pricing is reasonable."
"There is a license required for this solution and it can be on a monthly basis."
"The price of the solution is reasonable."
"Its price is quite reasonable. The cost depends on the depreciation and the volume. It also depends on the infrastructure. If your infrastructure increases, you would need some more licenses."
"Pricing is pretty costly as compared to the other products but worth investing for the long term and high ROI."
"Price-wise, most of the backup products are similarly priced, and NetBackup is the same."
"If you have a complex environment with dozens of different servers and apps, I recommend you look for TB licensing."
"Veritas NetBackup is very expensive, and I think price is the main reason which some customers don't want to use this solution."
"Pricing is expensive, so it could be lower."
"Annual licensing fee."
"When we consider the quality and value of Veritas NetBackup, it is worth the cost."

Hi Shashi,NetBackup is an enterprise tool and Acronis is for private/small companies (in my opinion). If you have a plan for ~150 servers then Acronis is a NO WAY for you (only if you have the time to prepare snapshots for each individual system one by one). KR, Jago

Technically NetBackup is a more reliable and comprehensive product as compare to Acronis. NetBackup has integration with all major business products like MS SQL Server, MS Exchange Server, IBM, SAP, HANNA, Share point and Active Directory. You can backup and restore full VM in NetBackup as well as BMR too for P2V. Acronis has limited features in comparison with Netbackup. Netbackup is a vast product. If you need any assistance you may drop a few lines and I will help you out.

I think it's not possible to compare "enterprise backup tools" (NetBackup) with simple "imaging tools" :)
