Significant cost savings with real-time processing and fast recovery
We use Kafka for a stage event-driven process from a process perspective. Our platform is an ID platform, so after registration data is received, it has to be stored from various registration locations. The process includes stages like quality checking, consistency, format, biometric data checking…

The product improves site reliability, but it is not stable, and the initial deployment was a little difficult
When we had outages, we had timeouts. Sometimes, the nodes would drop out of a cluster. Therefore, the applications would get timeouts. There is a newer version out that we're planning to upgrade to for some stability. It could also be caused by our design. The product must improve its reliability. It'd be nice if nodes could drop out and notify each other in a timely manner so that the applications wouldn't know if there was a problem.

Pros

"It's an open-source product, which means it doesn't cost us anything to use it."
"The most valuable feature of Apache Kafka is the clustering which is very easy to scale and we have multiple servers all over our platforms. It has been useful for stability and performance."
"Kafka's most valuable feature is its user-friendliness."
"With Kafka, events and streaming are persistent, and multiple subscribers can consume the data. This is an advantage of Kafka compared to simple queue-based solutions."
"It seemed pretty stable and didn't have any issues at all."
"The solution is very easy to set up."
"It is a stable solution...A lot of my experience indicates that Apache Kafka is scalable."
"Apache Kafka is scalable. It is easy to add brokers."
"Pivotal Greenplum's shared-nothing architecture."
"With VMware Tanzu Greenplum, one can make a huge database table and analyze the queries by adding in the SQL command. Some hint or command for the query goes over the multi-parallel execution."
"Companies can scale the solution, so long as they have server room."
"RabbitMQ will help to remove a lot of the complexities and create a loosely coupled codebase."
"After creating a RabbitMQ service, they provide you with a sort of web management dashboard."
"The security is great."
"Helps us to achieve large-scale analytics."
"Some of the most valuable features are publish and subscribe, fanout, and queues."

Cons

"would like to see real-time event-based consumption of messages rather than the traditional way through a loop. The traditional messaging system works by listing and looping with a small wait to check to see what the messages are. A push system is where you have something that is ready to receive a message and when the message comes in and hits the partition, it goes straight to the consumer versus the consumer having to pull. I believe this consumer approach is something they are working on and may come in an upcoming release. However, that is message consumption versus message listening."
"The management tool could be improved."
"The third party is not very stable and sometimes you have problems with this component. There are some developments in newer versions and we're about to try them out, but I'm not sure if it closes the gap."
"The repository isn't working very well. It's not user friendly."
"The UI used to access Kafka topics can be further improved."
"The initial setup and deployment could be less complex."
"Kafka 2.0 has been released for over a month, and I wanted to try out the new features. However, the configuration is a little bit complicated: Kafka Broker, Kafka Manager, ZooKeeper Servers, etc."
"Kafka has some limitations in terms of queue management."
"I would like to see the performance of the administration portal improved and additional messaging protocols."
"This solution struggled with multi-regional synchronization."
"The product is pretty hard to configure."
"Some integration with other platforms like design tools, and ETL development tools, that will enable some advanced functionality, like fully down processing, etc."
"When you have complex tasks, RabbitMQ is hard to use."
"The debugging capabilities and testing flexibilities need to be improved."
"Maintenance is time-consuming."
"It doesn't have any GUI-based monitoring tools."
