Significant cost savings with real-time processing and fast recovery
We use Kafka for a stage event-driven process from a process perspective. Our platform is an ID platform, so after registration data is received, it has to be stored from various registration locations. The process includes stages like quality checking, consistency, format, biometric data checking…

The product improves site reliability, but it is not stable, and the initial deployment was a little difficult
When we had outages, we had timeouts. Sometimes, the nodes would drop out of a cluster. Therefore, the applications would get timeouts. There is a newer version out that we're planning to upgrade to for some stability. It could also be caused by our design. The product must improve its reliability. It'd be nice if nodes could drop out and notify each other in a timely manner so that the applications wouldn't know if there was a problem.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Ease of use."
"The most valuable feature is the performance."
"Robust and delivers messages quickly."
"Kafka provides us with a way to store the data used for analytics. That's the big selling point. There's very good log management."
"The open-source version is relatively straightforward to set up and only takes a few minutes."
"For example, when you want to send a message to inform all your clients about a new feature, you can publish that message to a single topic in Apache Kafka. This allows all clients subscribed to that topic to receive the message. On the other hand, if you need to send billing information to a specific customer, you can publish that message on a topic dedicated to that customer. This message can then be sent as an SMS to the customer, allowing them to view it on their mobile device."
"Apache Kafka's most valuable features include clustering and sharding...It is a pretty stable solution."
"It's an open-source product, which means it doesn't cost us anything to use it."
"I like the high throughput of 20K messages/sec, and that it supports multiple protocols."
"The product's reliability is the most valuable feature."
"Very fast for query processing."
"The security is great."
"Reliability for the messages is key. RabbitMQ ensures your messages are safe. They are not deleted and stuff."
"The product's feature of data transaction works fast."
"The loading speed is very good."
"It's one of the fastest databases in the market. It's easy to use. From a maintenance perspective it's a good product. The segmentation, or architecture of the product is different than other databases such as Oracle. So even in 10 years, the data distribution for such segments will not affect other segments. The query performance of the product, for complex queries, is very good. It has good integration with Hadoop."

Cons

"Maintaining and configuring Apache Kafka can be challenging, especially when you want to fine-tune its behavior."
"Prioritization of messages in Apache Kafka could improve."
"I would like them to reduce the learning curve around the creation of brokers and topics. They also need to improve on the concept of the partitions."
"The ability to connect the producers and consumers must be improved."
"The UI is based on command line. It would be helpful if they could come up with a simpler user interface."
"I suggest using cloud services because the solution is expensive if you are using it on-premises."
"The manageability should be improved. There are lots of things we need to manage and it should have a function that enables us to manage them all cohesively."
"Some vendors don't offer extra features for monitoring."
"Implementing a circuit breaker scenario using RabbitMQ is complicated. This complexity arises because manual intervention is required to manage worker details and handle operations based on worker IP addresses."
"This solution struggled with multi-regional synchronization."
"Maintenance is time-consuming."
"The debugging capabilities and testing flexibilities need to be improved."
"VMware Tanzu Greenplum needs improvement in the memory area and improved methods for quick access to the disc. So, one of the quick goals of Greenplum must work on enhancing access to the disc by adding hints in the database."
"The installation is difficult and should be made easier."
"There are some security concerns that have been raised with this product."
"Initial setup is a little complex. It took around two weeks to deploy."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Apache Kafka is an open-source solution."

"I rate Apache Kafka's pricing a five on a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap and ten is expensive. There are no additional costs apart from the licensing fees for Apache Kafka."
"The price for the enterprise version is quite high. For on-premise, there is an annual fee, which starts at 60,000 euros, but it is usually higher than 100,000 euros. The cost for a project including the subscription is usually between 100,000 to 200,000 euros. The cost also depends on the level of support. There are two different levels of support."
"Licensing issues are not applicable. Apache licensing makes it simple with almost zero cost for the software itself."
"Kafka is open-source and it is cheaper than any other product."
"Running a Kafka cluster can be expensive, especially if you need to scale it up to handle large amounts of data."
"Apache Kafka is free."
"It is an open-source platform. Although, we have to pay for additional features."
"Since the tool is an open-source product, there is no need to pay anything."
"We are using the open-source version of this solution."
"This is an open source solution."
"The price is pretty good."
"It is the best product with best fit for price/performance customer objectives."
"The pricing is okay."
