A user-friendly solution that can be used to integrate the logs properly with different connectors
We use ArcSight Intelligence for some user behavioral analytics. The solution is used to integrate the logs properly with different Unix-based and Microsoft-based connectors. The solution gives us alerts on a single console to give us clear visibility of the total network and filter the unnecessary…

It has a drag-and-drop interface, so you don't need to know SQL or Java to construct a query
The ingestion happens quickly, so you can run up the data costs if you use the default settings. It isn't a problem for government agencies in the Saudi market, but many of the corporations in India are small or medium-sized enterprises that cannot afford that kind of ingestion system. Splunk needs to be tweaked in JSON so you can limit what is coming from the endpoints, especially the events. One needs to filter that out so that only certain events are ingested, like login failures, Active Directory changes, password reset requests, privilege modifications, etc. Each Windows machine generates about 310 KB of information per event, but we can tweak that down to about 50 KB.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We found the correlation engine to be very good. It takes logs from different types of devices and does the correlation in a good way."
"The most valuable feature of ArcSight Intelligence is a single console where the entire dashboard gives all the connected details in a single place."
"The product has a valuable interface."
"The platform helps us improve threat detection capabilities."
"The ability to tailor an environment to suit our specific use cases is a major advantage of ArcSight compared to other logging servers such as Splunk."
"We can do things in minutes instead of days."
"I like Splunk's data aggregation and search capabilities."
"The Splunk queries are valuable."
"We are much faster finding and addressing issues with Splunk."
"The integration is seamless with many devices and operating systems."
"We primarily use it to correlate logs throughout the enterprise for both searching and use in investigations."
"It provides a lot of analytics with the underlying AI engine, and it is a lot easier than other solutions. There are some products that do automated AI-based detection and drawing up charts, but for network monitoring and all of the monitoring aspects, it is quite a nice tool. It is very convenient for business users because they get more or less a lot of data readily available. If you're familiar with the Splunk query language, you can pretty much do whatever you want."
"What is nice about the solution is that it makes it easy to build the queries, search for the events and then do analysis."

Cons

"We haven't found the product fully scalable."
"ArcSight Intelligence is a bit slower, and its speed should be improved."
"The frequency of the updates that we are getting can be improved because the number and types of incidents that are happening at the global level are far more than what we are receiving. The frequency of updates feeds related to our rules should be increased. There should be more frequent information about the new rules that are coming and the global threats that are happening. There should be better options for dashboard creation. At present, the dashboards are good, but there is scope to make them better."
"The dashboard is not user-friendly and is in black and white."
"ArcSight Intelligence's pricing needs improvement."
"Splunk does not build apps. They only go back and validate the apps that somebody has already built. They should have remote consulting support. They have a wonderful solution. They have 24/7 security. Nobody needs to depend on any third party and will therefore just buy Splunk on the cloud."
"Not even Splunk's support guy, who came to our firm, could help with defining proper role management."
"Customizing our commands should be simpler. Creating custom commands in Splunk requires a long, complex process. For example, we have a command to add all the column data, but we don't have a command to get the average of the column data at the end. It would be useful to have a blank at the end to create our commands and leave the rest to others."
"Previously, they developed custom connectors or add-ons for a lot of applications. But that number can be upgraded still. There are a lot of applications in the world that are not supported."
"The GUI could be improved to include some of the capabilities that other BI solutions have. The layout is a little restrictive where you can’t resize all the panels to exactly how you would like them without tweaking some XML code."
"Splunk Enterprise Security could improve in automation, flexibility, and providing more content out of the box."
"For us, the area that Splunk Enterprise Security can improve is performance optimization."
"It needs integration with a configuration management solution."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"They offer perpetual licenses for the product."
"It is an expensive platform."
"The solution is expensive and only suitable for enterprise environments."
"Its price is average and not very high. Splunk might be a bit cheaper than this. Its licensing is on a monthly basis."
"ArcSight Intelligence is an expensive solution."
"The licensing is good, but the pricing absolutely needs some work. It is very high."
"I would highly recommend anyone evaluating this option to download the free trial which allows for the ingestion of 500MB of data per day in order to get a feel for what Splunk does at its core. It will get pricey once your ingestion rates start to sky rocket, but I would consider it expensive given the amount of information that it allows you to analyze and react on straight out-of-the-box."
"It's a yearly subscription."
"The pricing and licensing of the product are quite high."
"I believe that Splunk Enterprise Security is worth the price, but it is expensive."
"I remember Splunk being relatively affordable. Kibana was more reasonable, but you get more with Splunk. If I was suggesting something, I would probably suggest Splunk because it is better to pay a little bit more and get a lot more."
"The solution is costly."
"Splunk Enterprise Security is expensive but the solution is equipped with a lot of features."
