Offers third-party patching feature, good scalability, and enhance endpoint management capabilities
From the perspective of the team that's handling the environment, it's not so user-friendly compared to other solutions, the competitors. We hire new teams from time to time, and they are complaining, look, although BigFix is very robust and cross-platform, it's not so fun to work with. The user interface for the technical teams is not so advanced. It's not so intuitive compared to SCCM, compared to ManageEngine. And this is the fact that they have, with the teams, because they have the rejection. The look and feel of the system are old-fashioned. For new employees, it's less easy to find someone I don't need to educate on how to work with BigFix. Although it's easy, it's not as intuitive as the other solutions, and the functionality of the other solutions is less advanced. Let's summarize: The user interface has to be changed from the perspective of the teams that are managing the product. It's old school.

The solution is expensive, support is poor, and it takes time to understand the product
I have worked with traditional antivirus solutions like Symantec, McAfee, Trend Micro, Kaspersky, Sophos, and F-Secure. Broadcom acquired Symantec, and Trellix acquired McAfee. The market is disturbed as other solutions are acquiring the traditional leaders. Getting support is becoming a challenge. Carbon Black provides endpoint detection and response. CrowdStrike provides vulnerability assessment and application testing features. It gives additional threat prevention to the customer. So, I prefer CrowdStrike over Carbon Black. Carbon Black and CrowdStrike provide very good market strategies.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Between the user groups, the community, the AVP support, the direct access via technical route and the PMR support, half the time I don't even need to do a formal PMR because the solutions from the community resolve whatever issues we're having. It's the best community and support based system I've ever used."
"All the vendor patches are synchronized automatically."
"The use of fast query has been extremely valuable providing insight in real time of the endpoints."
"It is user-friendly."
"Prior to BigFix we used Altiris, which was distributed. We had to manage multiple servers, and duplicate the tasks that we did on each server. BigFix tremendously reduced the amount of work that we had to do on each server in a centralized manner. We could minimize the work that we had to do, and we had a lot more control over the tasks and what machines they ran on."
"The most valuable features are patch management, software installation, and asset management."
"The older version of the tools that I use also included the connectivity aspect, and the fact that the tool now has it separate from the collection of usage data makes the deployment of these tools much easier."
"From a security standpoint, it allows us to make sure that we're not leaving ourselves vulnerable to exploits and things like that. That's the biggest advantage that we see to the product from a security standpoint."
"Some of the valuable features I have found are the online documentation of the solution is well organized and thorough. I like the simplicity of bypass and the visualization of the active components."
"Carbon Black Cb Defense has a nice component called Alert Triage. It contains full details of the process execution "kill chain" and "go live" for immediate remediation."
"The solution has a very nice API on the back end for remoting into a system and executing scripts or utilizing self automation."
"The product enables device controls, helping us protect the devices and prevent data leakages."
"The initial setup is pretty straightforward."
"Technical support is excellent."
"I feel that the initial setup was straightforward and not complex."
"The solution is stable."

Cons

"License management isn't quite as easy as it should be to deal with the licensing. You need to take the server down to import the new licenses which I find to be annoying."
"Maybe the online help could be improved. It'd be nice if you would have a lot more phrases and keywords that you could search for and find answers with the help."
"They need better integration."
"The main shortcoming of BigFix was integration with vulnerability management. If you had a vulnerability in your software and BigFix on the endpoint, you needed integration with Qualys, Tenable, or another vulnerability management solution to fix that. It was like, "Okay, we can identify issues, and get that information back from the endpoint, but what are we doing about it?""
"It could use better integration with Hypervisor products like VMware."
"We need a much better multi-tenant option."
"IBM has not focused on the Web Reports capabilities."
"The console interface is not friendly, and requires training before using it in production."
"The solution would be more effective if there was a way to block automatically based on behavior."
"The GUI and reporting should be addressed and the product's administration features need fine tuning."
"But here, we hardly can take any kind of a report out of Carbon Black, so I think that should be something that should be more user-friendly."
"Occasionally, we'll have issues with the latest version and they'll basically tell us that they will improve it in the next iteration. They need to work on their version release quality."
"What was rolled out to my company are mixed versions of Carbon Black CB Defense, so what I'd like to see in the next release is more synchronization, where it can detect the endpoint that's running an old version and suggest updates."
"With the on-prem one, the bug has been reported by the community in early January or February, something like that, at the beginning of the year, and it's still not addressed. They have released two versions since then, and yet neither of them addresses this specific issue."
"The UI interface needs improvement. The management needs further work in future versions."
"The endpoint machines need improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price is very fair."
"Its price is very reasonable."
"The price of the solution is high. There are not any additional fees from the standard license."
"I would stay with the Managed Virtual Server license model, which is a 1-to-1 license per OS whether it is virtual or physical."
"The product is less costly when compared to other solutions, and this is a good solid solution for what we have paid."
"The license is subscription-based."
"So, the pricing is slightly more expensive than the others. I have to keep buying licenses every time I add a new device."
"You are charged per server and per workstation when using BigFix. ManageEngine is a lot cheaper than BigFix. There are some additional costs, such as support."
"The price for the solution is completely at government level, meaning one which is very high."
"The pricing [is] more or less the same as other similar solutions."
"This is a really expensive product and we pay licensing fees on a yearly basis."
"Price-wise, VMware Carbon Black Endpoint is a highly-priced solution. Regarding the licensing cost of the solution, one needs to opt for an annual subscription."
"The platform is expensive."
"In terms of licensing costs, Carbon Black CB Defense was all associated with CROW and the services my company is using with them, so it came all-inclusive."
"The product is expensive. There are some additional costs apart from the standard licensing charges attached to the solution."
"It's reasonable in price"

BigFix and Carbon Black are really two different products from a functionality standpoint and are not really competing products. Carbon Black Defense is essentially an anti-malware (with more smarts and they refer to it as Next-gen AV) BigFix does not provide anti-malware functionality. BigFix has multiple components that you would use to protect your environment BigFix Patch: As the name sug...

These are complementary solutions. Cb Defense is a combination of next-gen AV and EDR capabilities. BigFix is used to identify assets, distribute software, Patch OS and applications, provision systems, keep systems continuously compliant and much more. Many enterprises use BigFix to find which endpoints need Cb, distribute Cb agents, keep them updated and fix what Cb finds either by quarantining the endpoint, patching it, distributing a new application or wiping and reimaging it.
