The product is reasonably priced, but the solution is a little obsolete because it is deployed on-premise
If I want custom monitoring across a very large estate of more than 50,000 units, the on-premise deployment gets quite slow. The on-premise product’s performance must be improved. The solution is a little obsolete. That is why the solution moved to Helix, a SaaS operating system. The SaaS platform has the features I like. There is no point in BMC expanding TrueSight Operations’ console. It's high time that BMC starts a demise path for the product and is associated only with Helix. If we need any additional function, we must switch to Helix. Since TrueSight is deployed on-premise, the scalability and usage of the product are mainly focused on providing basic features and not enhanced features like analytics or cost analysis. People should move to a SaaS platform because on-premise products have limited storage and capacity.

The ability to use command rules is great when our operators have repetitive tasks, but we'd like to automate off of different highlighted messages without actually knowing what the message is.
One of the things we've been wanting to do is to be able to automate off of different highlighted messages without actually knowing what the message is. For example, we'd like to be able to create some generic automation when we receive a warning or alert message to allow, if nothing else, the automation team to know so we can contact the product owner. If there's something we can do to automate or expedite notification to the proper people, we want to try to do that.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The major advantage of the product is estate management."
"The most valuable features of BMC TrueSight Operations Management are the blackouts and event management."
"It is a very stable product."
"From an administrative standpoint, what stands out in TrueSight is the ability to implement quickly. When they have a requirement to monitor something, we're able to turn that on quickly in their environment. We're able to set up new apps within a day."
"TSOM's ability to consolidate alerts into a single location and provide filtering of alerts is great."
"Helix Innovation Studio is a very good feature. It allows us to develop our own enterprise applications and make them available for the customers."
"Its event management capabilities are very open and flexible. I haven't seen a use case scenario with a customer that we couldn't actually solve the problem for, so it's really good. There are some interesting things that happen in an enterprise network (things that people don't normally expect), and the event management product is very flexible. You can solve problems as far as your imagination can go with it."
"What I like best about BMC TrueSight Operations Management is that it allows you to do granular monitoring and improves VM load."
"Because we can define complex commands, the training of new operators is quicker. We can also put checks in place, that will prevent user errors."
"With the automation pieces we can bring this region up or take this region down, and it allows us to always meet our time critical requirements."
"It's a very stable product. I very much like the SSM stuff in it. The rules engine, it's awesome."
"The documentation is simple, easy to follow, and use. A limited, first-time systems programmer can do it, in that it is out-of-the-box almost functional."
"Once automatic IPL has been defined, anyone can perform an IPL with very little intervention. We know that all of the components will be started correctly."
"It is an easy product to use and it is stable."
"The service has been wonderful. I like the people that I have had to deal with. The process is very straightforward. I call or use the website."
"Valuable features include: SSM, which provides for orderly startup and shutdown; OPSLOG, which enables filtering by message-id, and/or jobname(s); Rules, as OPS/REXX interface streamlines deployment, interfaces easily with JES2 and z/OS."

Cons

"More modules for less popular applications and better documentation."
"It would be better if the initial setup and deployment were more straightforward."
"BMC's online documentation is often incorrect or incomplete."
"It's too complex, too many servers are required, there are too many different components in the solution, and a lot of agents are required."
"We have a unique use case because BMC typically sells this solution into enterprises that are deploying it within their IT, versus to a managed services provider like us where we're supporting thousands of customers. Multi-tenancy and the scalability have been challenges along the way, as we've grown... If anything could have gone better as we were ramping this up and adding a lot of volume to it, I would say it's the scalability. That would be one thing that could be improved."
"Specifically around application performance monitoring, BMC is definitely not the market leader. The Dynatraces, the New Relics and the like are more of the market leaders in that space. I would like to see them grow that space a little bit more aggressively. It has not really been their bread and butter."
"BMC TrueSight Operations Management could use some enhancements in the application visibility tools."
"The solution could improve its price."
"It’s a complex product. The initial installation is easy, but implementing various functions is a constant process."
"Some of the command sequences are too long."
"Because of its age, it's a little bit difficult to modernize some of the integrations and some of the functions."
"The GUI interface could be improved, but that is coming. They are working on that."
"One thing that comes to mind is the MQ interface. The last time we tried to use it, it seemed a little clunky."
"The reason sometimes it is not stable, we do not have the expertise to write the script."
"Scalability is zero. It cannot be scaled because of its age."
"It definitely needs more web-based interface, to be more mobile-open. More APIs, more open source to it."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution is based on endpoints and knowledge models which can be costly."
"We did a five-year, multimillion dollar deal."
"The solutions are not the cheapest but are robust and stable. License model is rather complex and BMC do often change the model."
"Consider scalability very carefully: how much you want to monitor and what components are very important. Then, depending on these two things, filter out unwanted metrics or attributes. If you do a good job at filtering the data, then your licensing costs will be manageable."
"Pricing is very high."
"Other products are more expensive than BMC TrueSight."
"The price of BMC TrueSight Operations Management is very high. If there was more flexibility with the sizing of the licensing it would be helpful, especially during the pandemic. We have wanted to expend but the licensing cost is too high."
"They have changed the licensing fees."
