Provides efficiency in migration and DAW but requires a high level of administrator knowledge for configuration
This solution still relies on inbuilt configuration. For example, I'm pretty much impressed with Dynatrace POC, where we deploy the agent with a simple click, click, click, and then that's it. And we did not build any alerts or anything. We just started getting the alerts, warnings, and everything on its own system, understood what the benchmark is and what is the threshold, and it started giving you the warnings and the caution alerts, the danger alerts. So we expect something like that should be there in Broadcom at the level. But, instead, it expects us to configure. So that is what is missing there. Even if the server CPU usage is 95%t, it doesn't harm you. It doesn't send you any alerts. We think the system is normal. So it's not normal. So this is what they should think and send you AI/ML-related alarms on their own. In future releases, I would like to see more AI and ML capabilities, which are kind of missing. Another area of improvement is its infrastructure monitoring perspective. For example, they are still using UIM, which is a good tool. But for APM, they have come to DXP. However, in terms of UIM, the unified infrastructure management, there is no DXP version or AIML version of it. So they should try to find an updated version of it so that it is not competing with the rest of the solution.

Dynamic mapping enhances workflows that are user-friendly
One aspect that requires improvement is the agent. Without an agent, gathering sufficient information on applications is challenging. Additionally, the agent sometimes creates performance issues in production environments. If AppDynamics could develop a means to monitor without an agent, it could significantly improve application performance and reduce potential problems. Moving to an agentless solution, like what some competitors are doing, would be beneficial.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a nine out of ten...there is a very easy way to deal with it by adding more servers to the application."
"We are using the on-premise and cloud versions of Broadcom DX Application Performance Management."
"Crash analytics goes down to the level of code you need to check."
"We did the setup for a new datacenter, and that was pretty straightforward."
"For the most part, we run constantly without any issue at this point because of APM."
"The executive dashboard we created gives a lot of visibility. There's no working on something for a little bit before someone knows."
"We receive good transactions from it with good graphs, as well, documenting the activities of total visitors on the site. We can pull the reports and provide them to the client, as required."
"We are able to easily and quickly find some of the problems with the applications and coding, and some of the performance problems."
"The most valuable feature of the solution is its GUI."
"The solution offers great visibility that allows you to track where errors originated."
"What I like most about AppDynamics Server Monitoring is that it's easy to manipulate and easy to implement. All solutions have the same features, but what sets AppDynamics Server Monitoring apart is that it's really quick to implement. AppDynamics Server Monitoring has a great interface. As a developer, it doesn't matter whether it's SolarWinds, Dynatrace, or any APM you're using, but it would matter to the customer. A product must be easy to manipulate or use, for example, AppDynamics Server Monitoring, for the customer, but for developers like my team, there's no pressure, even if a solution requires coding."
"AppDynamics makes it much easier for us to detect problems or issues before they become problems. We have alerting on all of our business transactions."
"The solution's most valuable feature is the response time from the end-to-end server."
"We can make custom alerts in our system for specific issues like high CPU utilization or application downtime."
"AppDynamics Database Monitoring's most valuable feature is the ability of the out-of-the-box to update the information, provide various metrics, and possibly include custom metrics."
"The platform is reliable in identifying the core system issues."

Cons

"Needs the ability to dynamically create dashboards. Right now, we do custom dashboards. Everything is created manually."
"CEM needs to be simplified, because it causes too many interruptions in our daily work."
"The upcoming changes for the deployment process of the agent will help a lot, in that others have gotten to that point first."
"Technical support is slow to respond and also asks redundant questions."
"User interface - CA is moving towards HTML5, but still a lot is Java, old fashioned, non-customizable and not user friendly. It’s look and feel is still too technical."
"The area of improvement is related to the areas of application onboarding and instrumentation, where the product has certain shortcomings."
"System incident analysis and performance monitoring need improvement."
"There is no auto flow diagram, and the alert mechanism is not as good when compared to other tools."
"Its resiliency can be improved. We're told that the best we can do with an on-prem solution is to have a hot standby that requires a manual switchover. So, it is a do-it-yourself Ikea model of maintaining data consistency between two servers, without having low balance or failover considerations for an on-prem solution."
"The only improvement I see is intercepting calls in a mobile application without injecting additional code. Currently, when instrumenting or monitoring a mobile application, it's necessary to release updates, prompt users to upgrade, and inject code into the backend. It would be beneficial if there were a method to intercept these calls without requiring users to download and upgrade the application. However, I'm unsure about the feasibility of such an approach."
"The solution's user interface should be improved."
"AppDynamics scaled well up to around 3,000 agents. The performance deteriorated after that, while Dynatrace could support more than 10,000 agents. We were surprised that AppDynamics' scalability is not so good."
"They are using Flash for their website, which is very slow. We had hoped the website would be much faster to use, and that is definitely what we want to see."
"There are certain limitations with the agents in the solution"
"I believe they need to increase their level of visibility in the infrastructure, particularly in the infrastructure monitoring section, which currently lacks visibility."
"I could not find a user-friendly interface for querying, and analytics sometimes gives the wrong results...I feel that analytics could have been better in searching and running the analytical queries."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Setup costs are quite competitive relative to other solutions, and simpler."
"Broadcom is a better and cheaper option from the financial perspective. It also depends on the DLP plug."
"All discounts are case by case to accommodate the client's budgets."
"On pricing, CA is very competitive. I think that's going to help in the long run."
"Althougth it is a bit expensive, it is really worth it"
"The pricing structure should be based on memory or CPU usage rather than the number of agents, as it makes the solution more expensive for us."
"Pricing and licensing are not issues."
"Negotiate a lot, but do not forget to buy the product because it is worth it."
"Take into consideration what you get for specific pricing models and how much it costs to add on things you may need later."
"If one is expensive and ten is low price, I rate the product price as seven out of ten."
"I would like more flexible pricing: A pay-per-use model, rather than just a fixed-price model."
"I give the price a five out of ten."
"AppDynamics is priced on the higher side."
"We have purchased a few licenses for AppDynamics Database Monitoring and the price is high."
"Pricing is based on the size of the deployment."
"The licensing scheme is very complex. They need to make it easier."

All three are good tools for monitoring web application transactions. Of course, CA has a much broader set of capabilities than the other two - can monitor networks, servers, databases, etc. AppDynamics provides a product that you can use in-house. NewRelic is only a SaaS offering. Which of these is best for you - depends on what you need. If you already have CA deployed, you are probably looking at just web transaction monitoring then. AppDynamics and NewRelic are more current in this area than CA Wily.

From my experience with CA Wily, it's more expensive and requires a long implementation, it is also less flexible. We did not consider New Relic because we did not want to have our sensitive data hosted in the cloud. Not acceptable in our business. AppDynamics offered a short implementation time, immediate satisfaction and only required fine-tuning afterwards. Also the pricing was lower then CA Wily.
