Very effective for malware and signature-based anomalies but stability needs improvement
Our company uses the solution for data functions in banking. It is a backend solution in the server center.  We analyze traffic and adapt configurations or customize policies to the environment of the IPS itself.  The solution very effectively provides malware protection and signature-based…

Complements any firewall
The core processors are there and it's able to generate reports for that. It also complements any kind of firewall. For example, if an end user is using Palo Alto as a firewall, they'd need another layer of firewall like the S-Series that will protect internal servers. It's something that complements any firewall in the market.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Cisco has many products that are easily integrated with other services."
"The solution is very powerful coupled with Firepower."
"NGIPS' best feature is the separate IPSec tunnels, which makes the user's data more secure if they want to access it privately."
"In the virtual deployment, you have a couple of choices depending on your needs and how much bandwidth you have that needs to be inspected."
"It has aligned the features in accordance to our strategic needs"
"The most valuable features of Cisco NGIPS are protection and reporting."
"The most valuable feature would be the IPS is very important in Cisco Firepower because I can configure deep configuration in IPS and tuning."
"The solution gives us a lot of visibility into our security."
"Setup is straightforward with the same reliability and scalability as the firewall series."

Cons

"Overall, it lacks user-friendliness. It could be easier to manage. I can train any customer using FortiGate or Palo Alto in a few days, but with Cisco, it takes much more time because the systems aren't easy to use."
"They could provide one solution to fit all the use cases."
"Some Next-Generation Firewall solutions come with Intrusion Prevention. It would be nice if Cisco NGIPS included that."
"I think the part of IPS and everything else needs to be better equated to the real needs or current needs of the business compared to the other manufacturer, because it is not straightforward, a way to configure it compared to the other competitors."
"I would like to see the sanctions lifted so we could use the full solution and have the speed increased."
"We would like to see some improvement in the configuration process for this solution, as it is currently quite complex."
"I'd like to see some cloud management. Cisco maybe already has it, however, my company doesn't use it as cloud management."
"The price is a little high. It's hard to find solutions that are easy on the budget and strike a balance between affordability and features."
"Lack of tools to help educate end users"

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Pricing depends on negotiation with the vendor, although I can say that it is moderate."
"It could be less expensive."
"I would rate the pricing 4 out of 5."
"In our company, we know that the price of Cisco products is high, especially for its switches, routers and IOS. The price of Cisco products may be twice its original price if you plan to extend some of its features."
"The solution is pricey, but worth it."
"Licenses for this product are available for either one, or three year terms."
"This is an expensive product, with the biggest cost being the license that keeps the service going."
"Cisco products are always expensive, but if you can afford the price then it's a great solution."
