Has supported flexible multi-platform backups and improved over time
Regarding the effectiveness of Dell NetWorker in terms of role-based access controls, I have experience with it, but I find it somewhat lacking in flexibility as it offers limited features, and I would rate it around seven out of ten. It is not that there is something wrong with the role-based access controls in Dell NetWorker, but it lacks many permissions or roles to assign, providing options only for administrator or user. To improve Dell NetWorker for the next release, I recommend enhancing flexibility in the policy, allowing selection of multiple options within the same policy, and addressing issues like the DNS lookup dependency to make it more controllable from Dell NetWorker itself rather than relying on other applications. Looking forward, I would like to see improved policy features and a more enhanced GUI, as it is still slow.

Provides effective backup for physical servers and needs improvements for cloud compatibility
We use OpenText Data Protector for Oracle database backup and some applications that run for database security OpenText Data Protector is good for physical backup, specifically for physical servers. It is effective for direct backups to EMC library or storage without using a repository. However,…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The software is quite complicated and useful for large corporations using different information systems."
"Although Dell EMC NetWorker is a little bit more complex to combine with other products, it is really a very strong product."
"The support for legacy products is very good."
"Because of the duplication feature, we were able to save a significant amount of storage space."
"Technical support for this solution is very good; they are nice people and whenever we need support, they turn up and investigate, and within an hour they will start an investigation."
"The software implementation takes about 30 minutes."
"The response time of the tech support is swift. The support is fantastic."
"It's a good product that can be integrated easily with the Data domain."
"We use this solution for data deduplication, and it also has the media library, so our disk-to-disk backup is also backed up to the tape, ensuring that if there is data corruption in the disk-to-disk backup, we will have a copy on the tape, which other solutions do not offer."
"If you have a complex environment, if you have different OS's - Linux, Unix, Windows - if you have backup to disk, Data Protector is a very good choice to cover the whole environment."
"It is more user-friendly."
"What I like the most about this solution is that I can change and access the Oracle backup file."
"If you have an idea of what you are doing, it's very flexible and very stable."
"Data Protector is highly scalable."
"The most valuable feature of Data Protector is its integration with VMware. A lot of software these days integrates with VMware, and you can run some of these things on virtual machines. You can even have your backup manager running on a virtual machine and use physical managers to move data around. Their VMware integration isn't too bad, but Commvault has that feature, and many other backup products do."
"The database it provides is the most valuable feature for us."

Cons

"There should be total integration of the replication and cloud logistic back up on cloud."
"They have many different products but they don't integrate all of the features into one product."
"They need to take off the tape and allow us to use different repositories in order to keep the data for five to 10 years."
"Its console UI should be better. It should also have more out-of-the-box reporting functionalities. It should also have easier cloud integration. They have got cloud boost and things like that, but if you want to directly back up to the cloud, I'm not too sure whether you can do it. For example, you can easily send data from Commvault to AWS, Azure, or a container, but it seems to be not so easy in NetWorker."
"The implementation was difficult and, due to some reason, it was not done properly and we had to suffer a lot."
"NetWorker sometimes has issues with the backup not starting and with connecting to the Oracle servers."
"This is a highly scalable solution, but on a larger scale, it is not very stable."
"I believe that the reporting could be improved and the report templates should be easier to understand and more comprehensive."
"This product needs a lot of improvement both on the technical side and in its pricing and compatibility."
"The product can be developed by including functionalities like DR, CDP, and SureBackup, which are currently unavailable in the solution."
"When you unplug a laptop with the GUI version from the network, the restoration status will be terminated and will not update even if you try to connect it back."
"I have SUSE XEN virtualization set up in my environment. HP Data Protector does not provide integration with it, and I would like to see it integrate with XEN in a future release."
"OpenText Data Protector is not user-friendly, especially for cloud backup."
"The problem with HPE Data Protector is when it goes wrong, it's very hard to fathom why it went wrong."
"In terms of what can be improved, I would say integrations with MongoDB. We use MongoDB and we need to go to scripts to do backups. We need more integrations."
"There have been some issues."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"You have to buy the deduplication software separately from the license."
"The price is a little on the high side, but it's reliable and provides a good service."
"The solution follows a subscription model for licensing. We pay annually to use the solution and the price is high."
"Pricing is cheaper for this product, compared to its competitors."
"Dell NetWorker has two types of licensing models."
"The pricing of the solution is not the cheapest compared to other similar solutions. The Networker is available as a component of the Dell EMC Data Protection Suite package and it should have the ability to be purchased separately."
"The price of the license could be cheaper and it would be a benefit if they came up with a new pricing model. The competitors here in Oman sell universal licensing where a number of virtual machines are hosted at the customer place which can be licensed, or you can license the CPU sockets in those servers. However, NetWorker offers only CPU sockets or overall storage capacity to backup, but there is no universal licensing where you can provide a number of VMs. They should offer more options to stay competitive with other solutions, such as Veeam."
"They are not cheap."
"The licensing cost is too high."
"Pricing/licensing is Data Protector's single best offering. In its most basic environment, the only license required is for whatever target device is required."
"The licensing structure provides cost savings to business."
"It is fast, reliable, and its licensing policy is great."
"The product is cheaper than Commvault."
"The solution requires paying for a license."
"Pricing for Micro Focus Data Protector is reasonable."
"The license for the solution is very expensive compared to the other products in the market."
