Has supported flexible multi-platform backups and improved over time
Regarding the effectiveness of Dell NetWorker in terms of role-based access controls, I have experience with it, but I find it somewhat lacking in flexibility as it offers limited features, and I would rate it around seven out of ten. It is not that there is something wrong with the role-based access controls in Dell NetWorker, but it lacks many permissions or roles to assign, providing options only for administrator or user. To improve Dell NetWorker for the next release, I recommend enhancing flexibility in the policy, allowing selection of multiple options within the same policy, and addressing issues like the DNS lookup dependency to make it more controllable from Dell NetWorker itself rather than relying on other applications. Looking forward, I would like to see improved policy features and a more enhanced GUI, as it is still slow.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution is scalable, and approximately 1,000 users utilize the solution in our organization."
"It is scalable software. All you need to increase is its RAM and CPU. It's pretty easy."
"It's easy to use."
"The backup software has been much faster since we've deployed the solution."
"The most valuable feature is NetWorker's integration with the data domain that transfers the data directly into the Dell appliance, so the data doesn't need to pass through the network."
"Data domain is a good feature."
"It is an extremely stable product."
"Very user-friendly with a good interface."
"The most valuable feature for me is the number of agents available to back up our data."
"What I like the most about this solution is that I can change and access the Oracle backup file."
"Data Protector works in conjunction with a Catalyst-based deduplication feature and HPE StoreOnce appliances to provide us with the tools to build reliable DR solutions for backups through Catalyst stores replication using ARS between the sites."
"It has the ability to backup both DB2 (IBM's RDBMS) and HP-UX (HP's Unix OS)."
"The valuable features are the ability to backup data, write to D2Ds, and utilize D2D compression technology, so we can store a heck of a lot more data on less storage, saving us time and money."
"The simplicity of the software since when it was deployed makes the training easy for the backup operators (there is a big rotation of employees in this area)."
"We are required to send sensitive information offsite, and Data Protector has made it easy to meet this requirement."
"OpenText Data Protector is good for physical backup, specifically for physical servers."

Cons

"They need more support for image backups."
"In older versions, the graphical user interface isn't so good."
"The support is an area with concerns where improvements are required."
"Support is definitely an area of concern because of the time it takes to resolve our issues."
"The implementation was difficult and, due to some reason, it was not done properly and we had to suffer a lot."
"Since the product is not on the front banner of Dell, the support may not be the best."
"The front end of the solution could improve. The user-friendliness is lacking."
"For me this is not acceptable... I hope this will be resolved in the 8.2 version of Networker, because restore speed is important (RTO)."
"Better documentation on how to backup the device itself through a flash drive or CD."
"Unfortunately, Data Protector is not exactly the tool for that task."
"I really wouldn't recommend others to use this solution - especially when it comes to the technical support."
"I would like to see a better user interface in the next release."
"VMware backup integration and cloud recovery is lacking."
"A lot of internal database corruptions (sometimes it becomes serious); the user has to back up the IDB daily and do the daily maintenance."
"It can occasionally be inaccurate in its backup/recovery time estimates."
"I rate Micro Focus Data Protector six out of 10 overall. I would recommend something besides Data Protector."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"On a scale from one to ten, where one is cheap and ten is expensive, I rate the solution's pricing an eight out of ten."
"The pricing of the solution is not the cheapest compared to other similar solutions. The Networker is available as a component of the Dell EMC Data Protection Suite package and it should have the ability to be purchased separately."
"It is inexpensive compared to new products."
"Dell EMC NetWorker is very expensive."
"It's approximate, but I believe we pay around $20-30,000 a month in licensing."
"Licensing is based on the number of terabytes, so you need to purchase packages."
"We use a license without a time term. We just need to buy additional support when needed."
"We do need to purchase a license, but sometimes, it comes as a part of the Dell Data Protection Suite (DPS). It has a capacity-based licensing."
"It is fast, reliable, and its licensing policy is great."
"We have many competitors who are pricing better, and we believe that our pricing is higher."
"Our licensing is on a capacity basis."
"Avoid using many LTO drives; when using fewer drives, the price will be extremely good."
"The license for the solution is very expensive compared to the other products in the market."
"Data Protector's pricing is very competitive and we have no issues in this regard. I would give it an eight out of ten in terms of pricing."
"The licensing cost is too high."
"Pricing for Micro Focus Data Protector is reasonable."
