Has supported flexible multi-platform backups and improved over time
Regarding the effectiveness of Dell NetWorker in terms of role-based access controls, I have experience with it, but I find it somewhat lacking in flexibility as it offers limited features, and I would rate it around seven out of ten. It is not that there is something wrong with the role-based access controls in Dell NetWorker, but it lacks many permissions or roles to assign, providing options only for administrator or user. To improve Dell NetWorker for the next release, I recommend enhancing flexibility in the policy, allowing selection of multiple options within the same policy, and addressing issues like the DNS lookup dependency to make it more controllable from Dell NetWorker itself rather than relying on other applications. Looking forward, I would like to see improved policy features and a more enhanced GUI, as it is still slow.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution is scalable, and approximately 1,000 users utilize the solution in our organization."
"The main advantages of the product are price and support."
"The solution is very stable, especially if you are using a RAC environment."
"There are no problems in terms of stability."
"Although Dell EMC NetWorker is a little bit more complex to combine with other products, it is really a very strong product."
"Simple, stable and straightforward."
"The most valuable feature of Dell NetWorker is its quick configuration and handling of large databases."
"The most useful features of Dell NetWorker for me are its support for all platforms, allowing me to take backups of Oracle, SQL, and AS/400, so it is flexible."
"We rely on generating daily reports on our stocks for auditing purposes, and those reports are useful, so I would say they are the most valuable feature."
"It's user-friendly and not overly complicated to configure."
"The stability of the solution is quite good."
"It is a traditional backup model. If you talk about file server and the official Windows database, it's a stable product."
"If you are an enterprise, and you need a strong backup solution, Micro Focus is for you."
"It is fast, reliable, and its licensing policy is great."
"We are required to send sensitive information offsite, and Data Protector has made it easy to meet this requirement."
"If others have a similar environment like we do, then I would suggest this solution for them."

Cons

"The implementation process could be improved."
"I haven't had a good experience with technical support. It takes them a very long time to resolve issues."
"It has not improved functionality for us. At least the unsupported version we are on is difficult to administer."
"There are too many reboots and the software requires constant updating - just like Windows. I don't like that so I feel that it isn't very stable."
"I am not very satisfied with the support."
"Reporting templates could be easier to understand and more comprehensive."
"The price of the license could be cheaper and it would be a benefit if they came up with a new pricing model."
"The management of Dell Networker is quite cumbersome because we have to operate on a separate interface for reporting backup jobs."
"I would not recommend this product to my colleagues."
"The Micro Focus Data Protector support is not as good as Veeam Backup & Replication's support."
"The solution is not intuitive enough. I think they should work on the user experience and the graphical interface."
"A lot of internal database corruptions (sometimes it becomes serious); the user has to back up the IDB daily and do the daily maintenance."
"I'm uncertain if it supports virtual machine backup and restoration. If they could enhance this aspect, they could gain more support from end users."
"Hyper-V backups need improvement so they can do GRE."
"This product needs a lot of improvement both on the technical side and in its pricing and compatibility."
"I rate Micro Focus Data Protector six out of 10 overall. I would recommend something besides Data Protector."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We use a license without a time term. We just need to buy additional support when needed."
"It's approximate, but I believe we pay around $20-30,000 a month in licensing."
"Dell NetWorker is an expensive solution. None of the backup products are cheap. The licensing model offered is usually a five-year one."
"On a scale from one to ten, where one is cheap and ten is expensive, I rate the solution's pricing an eight out of ten."
"Licensing is based on the number of terabytes, so you need to purchase packages."
"It is excellent from the pricing point of view. It is free with Data Protection Suite. Similarly, when you purchase Avamar, Dell EMC NetWorker is free with one terabyte license capacity. Its price is very competitive."
"It is inexpensive compared to new products."
"The solution follows a subscription model for licensing. We pay annually to use the solution and the price is high."
"The licensing structure provides cost savings to business."
"Pricing/licensing is Data Protector's single best offering. In its most basic environment, the only license required is for whatever target device is required."
"Data Protector's pricing is very competitive and we have no issues in this regard. I would give it an eight out of ten in terms of pricing."
"They have two types of licensing, one is for storage capacity and the other is client licensing. The capacity licensing here is a bit expensive."
"The license for the solution is very expensive compared to the other products in the market."
"In Data Protector, if you need extra features, you need to buy the agents for these features. Some of the features are Terabytes, some of them are agents. There's some complexity in the pricing and licensing."
"We have many competitors who are pricing better, and we believe that our pricing is higher."
"The licensing cost is too high."
