Provides a comprehensive view by integrating with other monitoring systems
There may be an issue since there are many tools like Splunk involved in network monitoring. From an IP perspective, Dynatrace is performing well. If they want to develop in network monitoring, they can, as it's part of their product line. It's not rocketry, so they can accomplish it. If I, as an SI, look at it from an enterprise perspective, considering the cost from the client, I prefer not to go with multiple systems, as they don't provide a complete 360-degree view. They need to improve on claims about being an enterprise system. The definition of enterprise is loosely used, however, from a holistic security perspective, including infrastructure, network, ports, software, applications, transactions, and databases, there are areas lacking, especially in network monitoring tools.

Achieve seamless incident response with valuable monitoring capabilities and reliable alerts
There are multiple features related to OpenText SiteScope monitoring that I have found to be very useful, such as SSL monitoring. If SSL is present as a file in a server, then OpenText SiteScope is a very effective tool to monitor when that certificate expires. It provides comprehensive information related to SSL certificates and log monitoring. If any kind of required keyword monitoring is present in the log file, OpenText SiteScope has excellent functionality for monitoring. It is very easy to configure and obtain the correct information related to end-user requirements. The agentless monitoring feature of OpenText SiteScope is particularly impressive and easy to configure and gather information from. According to the operations team perspective, there is no impact related to resource management from the agentless monitoring. It demonstrates very low resource consumption related to its functionality.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We spend less time on troubleshooting issues since Dynatrace proactively informs us of an impending bottle neck."
"We use it, in many instances, to find the root cause in production."
"The ability to use PurePath in analytics is definitely the most valuable feature. It helps you pinpoint issues, then develop and focus them in the right way."
"Support was very quick to help us identify a problem and fix it immediately"
"We can be more productive and agile. It allows us to be more accurate when we need to work with bugs."
"Dynatrace provides probable root cause for any issues which assists our support team to quickly address issues identified by Dynatrace."
"The most valuable feature the solution offers right now is the PurePath. When we see a web request, and something failing, we can drill down using PurePath."
"The real user experience monitoring is very helpful. We can see what real users are seeing, what JavaScript errors, what pages are very slow for them. As well, it helps to correlate the front-end users to the back-end application components, and the corresponding Method which is failing, as well. We are able to go to the correct spot and fix the issue."
"Simplest tool for monitoring servers, web content, databases and other hardware. Its dashboard is really good."
"The product's ability to monitor systems and applications and send alerts and create support tickets are the most valuable features of the product."
"I find OpenText SiteScope itself to be uncomplicated and deserving of a ten out of ten due to its simplicity."
"The Monitor Templates functionality allowed us to spin up monitoring with .csv files pretty easily."
"Instead of executing jobs multiple times, I can configure it once, schedule, and apply it on multiple servers in sequence. It allows me to create scripts and automate several processes, making tasks simpler and more efficient."
"It's a very flexible product so you can run a script out of it, even straight out of the box."
"Simple deployment: The deployment uses protocols such as NetBios, SSH, WMI, SNMP, which means that any device with any of these protocols will be monitored."
"It can monitor over a 100 technologies with built-in solution templates."

Cons

"When integrating this solution with any third party applications, there is an additional cost to pay. This can make the solution very costly to use."
"We have some issues with react user sessions."
"Getting the EM data, we have to open a browser. Generally, one of the asks from our clients or our engineering team is to change this."
"It is always requiring us to update the Dynatrace client."
"Network monitoring is lacking and could be improved."
"The user interface needs to be improved."
"It needs a better way to figure out how to dig deeper into the details, e.g., sometimes we have to wade through multiple logs, etc."
"I think scalability is what we're struggling with. I would say it's okay, but there's a little bit of room for improvement."
"The tool needs to support new technologies like Kubernetes. It also needs to improve scalability."
"The interface of OpenText SiteScope needs improvement. It has a Java-based interface, which is slow and could be simplified for better usability."
"We have four or five data centers around North America where we have it deployed into a single or a two-server primary backup type of deployment. All those are made available under a single GUI provided by Micro Focus that allows you to put them all together. A room for improvement would be an appliance or a server that would manage all of our other servers so that I don't have to remember to log on to all different servers and data centers. I could manage them from a single location."
"Direct integration with an SMS gateway for sending critical alerts to the support SME. This will help customer investing in third party middleware solutions for SMS."
"Full application functionality available via the API. There are some functions you can perform managing monitors, that are only available through the UI."
"There is a need to enhance the reporting feature in OpenText SiteScope. Reporting related to performance information for historical data needs improvement to provide better reporting related to application availability and end node availability."
"They need to offer better technical support, which, right now, is not helpful or responsive."
"It could be more reliable using a database repository instead of a log repository."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Dynatrace is usually paid on a yearly basis."
"Setup cost is very low considering that it is an almost totally, automatic process."
"There is a license cost, which is obviously more expensive than an open-source solution, but for the return on investment from what you get from it, it's a great investment. Of course, it could always be cheaper."
"Dynatrace is an expensive solution."
"We found an issue within the first week of ownership that has been costing us more than the entire license cost."
"If there are no corporate requirements to run Dynatrace Managed (operating it yourself), I would definitely go for the size option. For small and medium-sized companies, the size option is probably the cheapest one. You don't need to look into operating it. You don't need to run hardware. It is pay as you go."
"It's expensive."
"Make sure your leadership buy-in is in place. Ensure leadership understands that an APM solution is a fairly expensive, so they know what they are getting into."
"Licensing is a little steep."
"The product's pricing should be lower since there are many open-source products that can do the same job with better user interfaces. The tool's pricing is yearly and you need to pay for support."
"You have to pay for their "solution templates". Other tools do not charge you for knowledge-based monitoring bundles."
"I rate the solution's pricing a six out of ten on a scale where one is cheap and ten is expensive."
"The pricing or licensing cost for Micro Focus SiteScope is often bundled with other things, so the cost for each individual would be difficult to calculate. Pricing could be $2,000,000 a year. My company pays for technical support because it's part of the contract with Micro Focus SiteScope. You buy the licenses, but you're also paying for the support. With Nagios, it's much more bare-bones as far as paying for licenses and the software itself, and my company didn't have to use as much Nagios support yet in one or two years because there weren't too many problems using Nagios, and it's much more cost-effective, so that's one of the reasons why my company is migrating to Nagios from Micro Focus SiteScope."
"SiteScope licensing can be node based-or monitor-based. I would recommend for node-based licensing."
"Depending on your requirements, there are two licensing models available. A simple point model, or an endpoint model."
"When Micro Focus Voltage SiteScope has introduced approximately eight years ago and there was not very much competition making the price high. However, when comparing the price of Micro Focus Voltage SiteScope now to other tools, they should reduce the price. It is similar to a legacy tool at this point."

SiteScope is more of an ITOM tool, in my opinion. Comparing to a true APM tool, SiteScope is lacking on several fronts. Comparing to Dynatrace APM, it doesn't even come close to matching on most fronts.

The solutions have different purposes. I think it's better to summary both of them. The HP SiteScope is a tool to monitor infrastructure components without agents. It monitors availability and some performance metrics of infrastructure elements. The metrics can be visualized by service model, so you can see which components are being affected. dynaTrace monitors the application performance through agents. Applications developed by Java, .NET and PHP and also mobile applications are instrumented by the agents and monitored automatically. The monitoring covers 100% (all) transactions, providing traceability and point the problem. dynaTrace accelerates the troubleshooting, monitors end user experience, increase the collaboration between teams (dev, QA, prod, architectures), monitors business transaction effetivelly and also monitors infrastructure elements. Hi, SiteScope is an agentless Infrastructure monitoring tool. It has a wide range of monitoring capabilities including Server,DB’s,Middleware,Network and application’s as well. Its very easy to deploy & configure. Dynatrace is more application level monitoring. Its an agent based solution for java & Net applications. Its able to monitor transactions at thread level with deep drill down capabilities. The solutioning will be based on the monitoring requirements, scope, cost & scalability. Thanks, Raj
