Effective threat prevention with responsive customer support
We are using Fortinet FortiGate as a firewall Fortinet FortiGate has been invaluable. It has helped save costs due to its various features, reliable performance, very good UI, low latency, and stability. The Threat Intel engine in Fortinet FortiGate is highly rated for its effectiveness in…

Easy to set up, reliable, and good for traffic management
We are not scaling it right now. We bought it sometime back and we didn't need to scale it. We bought a higher end for our use case, which is still sufficient for another few years. We have 200 or so users of different levels and positions on it. We do not have plans to increase usage. This firewall is quite a capable firewall - even up to 1000 users. Due to that, we didn't find any requirement to expand it or replace it somehow. It has helped us build our software-defined WAN, LAN, et cetera. It is sufficient for us. It gives us Gbps throughput, which is good enough. The firewall itself is 32Gbps capable, which is more than what we need.

Good interface and firewall capabilities and overall easy to use
The security has improved as we can isolate the network. We can do attrition prevention via a tool that comes with the solution. We can have a VPN solution in place for those that work from home, outside the network, in a secure manner. We also like that it offers good authentication. It offers radius-based authentication, which has been useful for the company. The main platform is under the Open VPN firewall. The solution has high availability. When we have different ISPs, we can actually load balance those links or actually put some priority or even classify the traffic that might go into one ISP or another.

"Good performance, stability, and virtual domain ability."
"Initial setup is easy to configure."
"This solution has solid UTM features combined with a nice GUI."
"Their proxy-based inspection is responsive and secure."
"UTM/NGFW features and FortiCloud for logs and backups are awesome."
"The next-generation firewall is great."
"The most valuable features are the intrusion prevention system and the anti-virus."
"The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiOS are the ease of use and user-friendly interface."
"The interface is easy to understand, so when there are threats you get alerts. It's quite intuitive, but if you are ever confused they have instructional videos. For example, if you don't understand a graph there's a link to a video that explains what the graph means. It makes it very user-friendly."
"The solution is very user friendly."
"The SSL VPN is fee for use is most attractive."
"The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiOS are its simplicity, highly user-centric, and performs well. The line speed and for heavy traffic, is helpful for us."
"All networks are security-driven, we get throughputs and security. We feel that the people at Fortinet are easy to deal with from a support standpoint. If they need to jump in and help us, they're very willing to do that. Their email filtering, their data loss prevention, their intrusion prevention, type of products in the newest OSs has been outstanding."
"What I like about this solution, is that it is the only solution that currently offers VPN for clients."
"The most valuable features in OPNsense are reporting and visibility."
"We have found pretty much all the features of the solution to be valuable."
"URL blocking, Wireguard, Tail Scale, Engine Blocker, and VPN are the most valuable features for me."
"I find the solution to be user-friendly. It has a lot of reports and easy settings."
"It is a very good solution. I like the dashboard. I can see what is going on and manage it as I like it."
"What I like best about OPNsense is that, as a firewall, it's pretty good. I'm quite impressed with it. I had an excellent experience with OPNsense, which helped me achieve the targets I wanted."
"The most valuable features are reporting, the Sensei plugin, and firewall capabilities."
"We have been operating here in our lab for several months, and everything appears to be extremely stable."

Cons

"Technical support needs to be improved."
"Its price could be better."
"The ease of use could be improved."
"The cloud features can be improved."
"With FortiGate, the main complaint that I have heard is about the technical support."
"The initial setup is complex."
"I would like reporting to be improved and should offer a lot more tools to monitor the products."
"Fortinet already improved FortiGate, but in the current market, many brands of security devices have improved together. Fortinet still needs to catch up with market standards. Fortinet is lacking in features in comparison to competitors."
"The pricing of the product is too high."
"While it is a solid solution, there are some product limitations which exclude it from deployment in some situations."
"The technical support is good. However, during the holidays they can get a little slow to respond."
"It would be great if they can push the Microsoft updates through Fortinet OS and provide a centralized patch management system. They should also include the data loss prevention (DLP) and data leakage prevention features. They could also add network monitoring more effectively."
"The signature discs, compared to Palo Alto, aren't as good. It takes more time to get the signature updates."
"Right now, all the features meet my requirements."
"Right now, it's very trendy to integrate everything into the cloud. This solution would be more effective if they did more integration in that regard."
"I want to see a better integration or a better integration with the endpoint protection or with EDR with the security life cycle."
"The ability to set the VPN IP address would be a welcome addition."
"There are some add-ons that need enhancements to make management easier for users, especially the reporting features. Some reports don't show the level of detail I'm looking for, and I've had trouble installing certain add-ons, especially for Internet bandwidth shaping within my company."
"There are a few weaknesses. For example, there is a lack of some features that I have in certain commercial products."
"Its interface should be a little bit better."
"I think the most important thing is that it should be easily accessible, but currently, that doesn't seem to be the case. We need a hardware platform that's based on common standards and open computing principles, which would be like a commodity and benefit us greatly."
"An area for improvement in OPNsense is the hardware, which needs to be updated more frequently. DNS blocking is another good feature I want to be added to the solution. pfSense has a peer-blocking feature that I also want to see in OPNsense."
"The solution would not be suitable for anything large-scale."
"I would like to see better SD-WAN performance."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Fortinet is the least expensive solution."
"It's a very full-featured and it's priced well solution."
"Licensing is usually on a three-year period."
"We purchased a five-year bundle package, which worked out cheaper than competing solutions."
"The pricing of the solution is very competitive."
"Compared to Palo Alto, which we have used in the past, pricing and licensing are okay."
"Its price is affordable and lesser than Cisco. Cisco is expensive. In terms of licensing, there is only one issue. If a customer's license has expired a month ago and they do the renewal after one month, Fortinet renews the license from the start of the previous month. The activation of the product is done from the previous month, not from the date of renewal. The customers usually shout and complain that because they are paying today, the renewal should start from today. The support contract renewals or licensing should be renewed from the date of renewal, but Fortinet starts from the day it had expired. It is a loss for customers. They might have had some problems because of which they did not take the license one month before. Fortinet should work on this. Cisco doesn't do this. Cisco always starts from the day they apply for the license."
"On a scale of one being cheap and ten being expensive, I rate the tool's price as an eight."
"The software costs roughly half what the hardware costs. Overall, the product is expensive."
"The scalability of Fortinet FortiOS is good. However, central management is intuitive for the end-users. We had a lot of questions about central management, and sometimes they didn't use it and did their firewall management directly on FortiGate instead of using Fortinet FortiOS."
"The pricing is competitive for the medium and high markets but for the small markets it can be expensive."
"The support contracts are usually about $100 - $200 a device."
"The licensing for FortiOS is good, with a security license included when we update the main license."
"The solution could have a better licensing model. It's a bit more expensive than other solutions. The annual subscription is very pricy in Fortinet. The cost could be reduced."
"The pricing could always be lower."
"The solution is quite affordable and I rate the cost a four out of ten."
"There are no licensing costs for OPNsence."
"OPNsense is a well known open-source tool."
"I would rate the pricing three out of ten."
"It is not an expensive product. Basically, I deployed it because it was the fastest solution to satisfy our needs in open source."
"The price of OPNsense is good."
"I would rate the pricing a nine out of ten, especially considering the availability of a free community edition."
"Its pricing is unbeatable in comparison to other firewalls. You can have a small instance that could be €80 a month with the hardware underneath. Azure Firewall and FortiGate are out of the question at this price. If you are on a public cloud, you need the underlying infrastructure. Other than that, there is no additional cost. If you have it on-prem, you have to buy the server or the appliance. The hardware cost is replaced with the infrastructure cost in the cloud. You also have costs for the public IPs and underlying VMs, but that's not related to OPNsense. It would be the same for a FortiGate deployment on Azure. You need a FortiGate license, and you need the underlying infrastructure that scales up depending on your needs."
"I'm using the free version of OPNsense. I didn't check the pricing for the solution because I still need to test it before getting the approval to purchase OPNsense, and it isn't easy to get approval from the higher-ups."
