Helps to save money and resources with the data compression feature
One point I'd like to improve is that the tool should start selling small boxes again. It discontinued some products and is focusing on bigger, more capable boxes, neglecting the SMB market. Even though it's not a big market, it shouldn't have removed them. One way to improve the product is to add an operational assistant that doesn't depend on VMware. It could also establish more alliances with other operational systems.

Offers a simple user interface and is useful for data replication
I use HPE Primera for mission-critical applications. My company uses the product as a storage solution for our machines. The availability of HPE Primera in our company is critical for us, considering that we operate in an HA environment where we can't have downtime since we need to deal with cheque clearance for banks. The product's interface is simple to use. I am satisfied with the user experience provided by the product. The ease of use of the product's interface has directly had an impact on our company's operations, along with the improvement in the availability and performance of machines. Compared to HPE Primera, I work with a much more reliable storage solution like Dell PowerStore. Compared to HPE Primera, Dell PowerStore's features related to deduplication are very good, and it also offers a physical storage capacity of eight TB, which can be expanded up to forty TB. I would recommend the product to others who plan to use it only after taking into consideration their usage and requirements. From the price and performance point of view, Dell PowerStore is a better choice. I rate the tool a seven out of ten.

Runs seamlessly, gives excellent visibility, and is like having an extra employee
Tintri VMstore gives excellent visibility at the virtual machine level. By using the performance statistics for a particular virtual machine, we can see straight away how a VM performed at a specific time. We can see whether there is any issue with low latency or high CPU usage. With the Tintri platform, it is very easy to pinpoint any underlying problems and issues. Tintri VMstore enables replication, snapshots, and setting QoS at the virtual machine level. This is very important these days. I have been in this business for a long time. I have been working with VMware for over 25 years in data operations. Over the last six to seven years, there has been a serious threat of ransomware attacks. Back in the day, you would have a backup and the ability to do a restore because someone deleted a file. Nowadays, you also need to have proper protection when the next ransomware attack comes. The ability to have immutable snapshots is very important so that you can be back on track instantly when the next attack occurs. In my case, it has been a very good tool to avoid an attack and mitigate when an attack has already occurred. There is the simplicity of instant rollback. It does not matter how big the machines are. It is very easy to roll back the machine and get it up and running again. It enables us to do recovery at the virtual machine level. With Tintri SyncVM, I can do a per-file VM restore. It does not matter if it is a database, file server, or Exchange server. I have a complete copy of the machine from the snapshots where I can do full recovery or recover individual files if needed. The GUI is excellent when it comes to monitoring performance and capacity on a per-VM basis. I can directly go to the virtual machine, and via the widget in the vCenter GUI, I can see the performance statistics and historical and current performance for the virtual machine. I love the fact that it is so easy to get those numbers. I can also log in to the Tintri Global Center and get the performance data for the last five minutes and up to 30 days for a specific VM. You can use the one you want as a system admin. You can use the vCenter GUI for instant information and recent activities, or you can go into Tintri Global Center for deeper information and historical details. I worked with the older series of VMstore for many years, which unfortunately are coming to the end of life in February or March. I have been helping a customer in Sweden to migrate to the new T7000 platform. I have one customer who has been using their system for nine years, which is a very long time in these circumstances. Normally, you change storage every three to five years, but this customer has been so happy with their 800 series. The performance of these old series that are coming to their end of lifespan in February or March has been top-notch. The customer has been happy with the performance and total cost of ownership. Having a storage platform for nine years is impressive, not many can do it. This customer had a highly used and very big SQL Server running for many years. It had several jobs running for days. It was a hybrid VMStore at the time, so it had its limits. I pointed out to the customer to look at this virtual machine or this SQL Server. After we migrated it to the 7000 series, within a couple of weeks, we could see that the performance had significantly increased. Their long-running jobs got completed much faster because the 7000 series is 100% NVMe drives, so it is much faster than the hybrid. We could see a significant increase in performance. Tintri VMstore could be considered as an extra employee. It takes the load off your employees so that they can focus on other things on a daily basis. The total cost of ownership over time is beneficial when you are using a Tintri solution. Not many understand this. It is very important to point that out to a new user or a new customer. They have to take into consideration all the factors of daily operations. Having Tintri VMstore is like having an extra employee without having to pay them a salary.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I use the tool for Oracle databases, Oracle virtual machines, and Oracle Linux databases. I'm on the storage side, not a database administrator."
"The most valuable feature of this solution is its ease of use."
"Pure FlashArray X NVMe will quickly overcome all the hurdles you face, including network and latency issues."
"Overall stability is very good. It is a very stable solution."
"It's incredibly easy to use and greatly simplified our ability to both deploy and manage our storage subsystems."
"It offers competitive performance, and the Evergreen storage model of Pure fits well with my organization."
"Pure FlashArray X NVMe has low latency and high Ops. It is an evergreen model."
"The duplication algorithm allows us to get a lot more use out of less storage. We're running a five terabyte array right now and we're running probably about 30 terabytes on it. So the duplication rate is pretty phenomenal, without a cost to performance. It still runs pretty smoothly."
"It is a stable solution...It is a scalable solution."
"The most important thing that we had found when we purchased this product around six months back was its 100% availability and uptime."
"The performance of the solution is good."
"The product's initial setup phase was easy."
"There has been a lot of changes in HPE Primera OS, and most of the time any package related to it is simple to upgrade. It does not require any support for the operation. The customer can easily deploy any code directly from the GUI which is very good. Additionally, we have individual storage we can allocate and easily manage."
"The greatest advantage is the support when we encounter incidents, as HPE's support is highly responsive."
"Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."
"The most valuable feature of HPE Primera is its performance and simple replication."
"It is fast and reliable. There hasn’t been a single failure in three years of use."
"The ability to snap machines into VMware quickly is valuable."
"The product is seamless and very fast."
"Upgrades are super easy and can be done during business hours without interruptions in production."
"It's easy to use and runs itself."
"The Deduplication feature in VDI environments. If Tintri says we can host 3000 VMs in our storage, I know we can host 3000 VMs there. Believe the results."
"Simplicity of installation and management, high IOPS, management per VM, QoS, power and space saving."
"We love the real-time replication, ease of use when connecting our servers to the storage, and the level of redundancy inside the box... It's also simple software and integrates well with VMware so we get a lot of information about all of the VMs, how they're performing individually, and about network latency. That's very helpful when you're troubleshooting a slowdown."

Cons

"It is on the expensive side."
"In the future, I would like to see integration with enterprise backup systems."
"The tool's pricing is higher than competitors."
"In the next release, I would like to see real-time analytics for further insight into consumption models."
"Many options to check performance, like read, writes, random writes, and random reads, are missing in Pure FlashArray X NVMe."
"The UI for this solution needs to be improved."
"There are some challenges with data encryption and reduction."
"Our use cases require more multi-tenant capabilities and additional VLAN interfaces for separating different customers. We currently use it to provide storage, sometimes shared storage, to different customers, but it is less flexible in comparison to a dedicated solution."
"We face challenges with false alarms, particularly daily alerts related to replication link breaks. I'm not happy with the customer service and support."
"The product's stale snapshots feature needs improvement."
"The reporting console can be improved with out of the box reports."
"Some application solutions can be more acceptable on the HPE Primera site."
"Like most storage, we want to see flash become more and more stable. Like any flash that uses MLC or TLC techniques, over time, the more writes you have, the less usable the storage becomes. They try to plan for this and have a lot of extra space in the arrays, but over time, their performance does degrade. This is true for any flash storage."
"The cost of HPE Primera could be lower."
"The initial setup is not straightforward."
"HPE Primera's pricing model is an area of concern and can be considered for improvement."
"Technical support is an area where we had several issues, and it was hard to get some support in a specific case we had. I'm not very satisfied with them."
"More cloud integration."
"I'm waiting to see the Kubernetes package. I know they're releasing one, but I haven't seen it yet."
"The Tintri OS and GlobalCenter software do a great job of showing you troubled VMs, however it still could be a bit more helpful in diagnosing the issues."
"The solution is already good but the brand name is not so popular here."
"VMstore as a product is an appliance. It is normal hardware. When there are new releases of, for instance, VMware vSphere, it can sometimes take time on the Tintri side to support that. It can take longer than expected. Tintri could improve by ensuring shorter times for support and compatibility when there are new releases from partners like VMware or Microsoft."
"The product could be improved by adding iSCSI support. We have had to rethink how we implement some of our services due to this."
"The solution was challenging."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Pure FlashArray X NVMe’s pricing is cheaper than other products."
"The licensing is on a yearly basis."
"Its price could be better. It is not too expensive, but it is the high-end cost. It is kind of a Rolls-Royce. You pay a lot, but you get a lot out of it. So, the price pressure on the way down would be great, but at the end of the day, if you need to do the work, you just pay for it."
"The tool's pricing is cheap; I rate it a six to seven out of ten. Most of our sales are not subscription-based. We sell the hardware, and customers keep using it. They only renew the service part annually. The support can be a bit pricey, but the solution is more cost-effective than anything else out there."
"As far as the licensing costs, everything is included in the license."
"With VMware, we pay $300,000 annually."
"Given its price, Pure is not the first option."
"The product is expensive."
"The price to capacity ratio is good."
"It’s a reasonable choice. When compared to other options, we've found it to be accessible and within our means."
"The tool is expensive. I can say that HPE Primera is one of the costliest tools in the market."
"Because it has high availability, the cost is above average. The cost depends upon the sizing, and every customer has a different size. It is slightly above average in terms of cost compared to its competitors, but the value add was that they could know what their maintenance cost was going to be going forward. They knew what their renewal or expansion costs would be."
"HPE Primera is less expensive than HPE Alletra."
"The solution is cost-effective. I rate it an eight out of ten, with ten being excellent."
"The solution’s pricing is affordable and worth the money."
"The price of this solution is good for medium-sized and large businesses."
"Ensure the storage system "natively" supports the protocols that you wish to use (i.e., CIFS) without the need for the overhead of internal "conversion VMs" that run the protocols."
"With any SAN purchase, the sizing procedure is the most important step."
"Performance for the price is amazing."
"We haven't found Tintri's pricing to be a barrier to entry for any of our customers. Tintri works through a number of distributors and when we've had to purchase it for our customers we have found the pricing to be competitive."
"Always could be cheaper."
"Tintri is reasonably priced for the solution you get. Advanced features do require extra to use."
"Prices are not cheap, but it runs."
"The licensing model is relatively simple. For things like replication, however, the licensing needs to be looked at."
