Good replication features with helpful reporting and comprehensive email notifications
I use the solution for the backup and replication of VMs. I use Nakivo to back up in-house VMs. We also use the replication features of the product. With such an option I can just switch on the second standby hardware over to a replicated server at a fraction of the time, thus taking a lot of…

Simplifies data center application and failover processes and helps achieve Recovery Time Objective (RTO)
There is room for improvement in the replication interface and functionality. Every time you open a remote site, you need to sign in again. Ideally, single sign-on after integrating with vCenter should provide secure credentials that avoid re-entering passwords for every remote site access. It takes time every single time. It has a ton of features, but ease of use could be improved. It gets better with automatic configuration over time, adapting to access. If you bring in a storage test application, maybe an automatic plug-in to the adapter, say for HPE or other storage providers, would be helpful. We wouldn't have to go to the provider's sites to download them. The product itself is smooth, but timing issues arise due to replication lags in multiple areas. When this happens, we encounter errors. In our most recent environment, we left the virtual machines running at the recovery site, hoping to avoid redeployment.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The features that we like the most are the Backup Copy and Active Directory Integration. They have helped us to save a lot of time since we do not have to make the backup copies “by hand”."
"The virtual appliance for VMware vSphere is easy to deploy, easy to manage, and we have no need for additional Windows licenses."
"It is fast, simple, powerful, and has a price without competition."
"It is easy to set up using the included virtual appliance and also includes agents for most NAS systems."
"The VM Backup Verification is one of the features I appreciate the most."
"Nakivo makes our backs-ups more reliable and easy to recover in case of full damage or partial retrieval of files - all at a convenient cost."
"Backup jobs are running smoothly every day with job reports sent to email after they finish each job. That gives us peace of mind."
"The simplicity of installation and the intuitive user interface have made it easy for our team to quickly set up and manage the backups without requiring extensive training."
"We feel the ability to move virtual machines while they are still running to be the most valuable feature."
"The replication is a key feature."
"The thing I like the most about SMR is the reduced cost of management."
"It's easy to use and the interface is quite simple."
"The initial setup is easy depending on the environment you are working with."
"The most valuable features are the backup and disaster recovery services."
"This SRM solution can improve your footprint within a data center."
"We find the back up feature of this solution to be particularly valuable."

Cons

"Nakivo's implementation documentation could use a little beefing up."
"Using an independent bootable media to restore full physical machines would enable physical machines that may be serving as Nakivo Director or Transport machines to be reliably restored to service without undue delay, ensuring that an enterprise's local environment remains intact."
"There is a familiar error that pops up and that is a VM error as much as it is a Nakivo error. It says that the job couldn't calm the VM and restores might be impacted. That error is, to say the least, a bit scary. I have seen this type of error on other backup systems also."
"One complaint I have is the dashboard flashing as it reloads/refreshes itself. The program was not always like that and it happened after an update at some point."
"I think it is important to work not only in replicating the virtual machines in Amazon AWS, but in other cloud systems."
"In the loading of a backup, choosing what to restore seems to be a lengthy process, but it has always worked in my restore tests."
"I would love to see BackBlaze B2 implementation in the future, as that would be our preferred cloud destination, but Amazon and Wasabi are both very great choices in the meantime."
"An improvement would be to include a general data backup solution that is not only for virtual machines."
"VMware SRM's platform agnostics should support on-cloud usage as well."
"The solution could improve by removing some of the limitations we have been facing. There could be better integrated."
"Cost is definitely an area where the product could be improved."
"In my view, if VMware comes up with an appliance-based solution like vCenter Server (which was also Windows-based), it will be much easier for deployment. I"
"We would like the patching management function of this product to be improved."
"There is room for improvement in the automation and orchestration aspects of this solution."
"The interface is not easy to use and can be made more user-friendly."
"We've had configuration issues on occasion. We start to fail over, and then we have to call it off because the configuration is not right, or the data stores aren't configured correctly in the secondary data center. Oftentimes, it is just the experience level of the team, and we have to bring in the vendor to help and validate our configuration."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It has a much higher bang for the buck than other products we evaluated."
"The licensing model is very affordable compared to competitors, with a good quality-to-cost ratio, and the software is quite simple and fast to setup."
"The price is not a problem in NAKIVO, as it is the most competitive in the market."
"The pricing, setup costs, and licensing are easy to understand, no matter how you want to implement it."
"From the perspective of Indian users, the cost is a little bit high."
"As a free solution for a small environment, this is a great solution!"
"Nakivo has a good price-performance ratio."
"The prices are high."
"The price of VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery should be lowered in order to compete better in the market."
"I rate the solution's pricing a six on a scale of one to ten, where one is the lowest and ten is the most expensive."
"The cost of SRM is a little bit high, especially for smaller companies."
"The pricing is good."
"The licensing costs are increasing."
"The level of licensing required for this solution is dependent on the server instances in use."
"It is about $3,000 a year for the 25 pack. The package gives you the ability to protect up to 25 virtual machines."
"SRM is reasonably priced for the functionality it provides."
