Very good for transaction level monitoring, but expensive and HP needs better support and training
HP Diagnostics is a very good monitoring tool especially for transaction level monitoring -- it shows hot spots which can be drilled down to DB level, table, query, SP's, record and field level and also at Object level, Classes level, method or Augment levels instead of pinpointing bottlenecks at layer level it goes deep inside for information. It has very good tracing capabilities despite being an agent based tool compared to other agent less monitoring tools. Overall a very good tool for monitoring application diagnostics for quick and easy resolution with help of thread information. Drills down from slow, end-user transactions to the bottle necked component, method, or SQL statement, helping to solve memory, exception, and other common problems Key features and benefits • Automatically detects all components touched by a business process and traces them with no user intervention • Provides complete application visibility across the application lifecycle, enabling higher application quality when applications go live • Reduces mean time to resolution (MTTR) in your J2EE, .NET, ERP, or CRM (SAP, Oracle®, PeopleSoft) environment • Integrates fully with HP Business Availability Center software, HP LoadRunner, and HP Performance Center.

Dynamic mapping enhances workflows that are user-friendly
One aspect that requires improvement is the agent. Without an agent, gathering sufficient information on applications is challenging. Additionally, the agent sometimes creates performance issues in production environments. If AppDynamics could develop a means to monitor without an agent, it could significantly improve application performance and reduce potential problems. Moving to an agentless solution, like what some competitors are doing, would be beneficial.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The diagnostics and configuration are the solution's most valuable aspects."
"The most valuable feature of Micro Focus Diagnostics is the information reported from an application that has timed out. For example, when you're Googling, or you're booking a ticket for Burj Khalifa here, the longest tower in the world, there are situations where the system can time out. There are times when you might not receive a response on the payment gateway or you are not able to find the reservation. The customer only receives the information that the session has timed out."
"For banking and telecom solutions, it's been quite useful."
"The most valuable feature of AppDynamics is Proactive Monitoring and Alerting."
"Setting up the monitoring agents was straightforward."
"It helped to find quick solutions for specific business transactions."
"The proactive monitoring from AppDynamics definitely helps."
"What I found valuable in AppDynamics Database Monitoring is good technical support. I also like that it's scalable and stable."
"AppDynamics Database Monitoring's most valuable feature is the ability of the out-of-the-box to update the information, provide various metrics, and possibly include custom metrics."
"It reduces the time to resolve issues and requires less manpower."
"Application Analytics' most valuable features are the real-user monitoring and the agents installed in the software stack on the application server."

Cons

"The interface could be more user friendly."
"The GUI and metrics of Micro Focus Diagnostics can be improved. The metrics the solution gathers can be limited and could be enhanced by giving more details."
"The interface is very old, and not very user-friendly. Most of our clients don't like the UI."
"The solution could improve by covering more technologies. For example, it does support .NET Core applications. However, it could be a bit better."
"I would like to see some cosmetic enhancements."
"I am not very impressed with support. The service could be better."
"AppDynamics Database Monitoring could improve the price of the solution, it is costly."
"AppDynamics Browser Real-User Monitoring needs to offer an end-to-end experience, including the internet layer and third-party elements that come into play on websites."
"AppDynamics Server Monitoring lacks investment in new technologies like Kubernetes and cloud solutions."
"An area that has room for improvement on the CR and ERP would be the addition of monitoring of the internal solution. For example, you can monitor the day-to-day and everything in the transactions with AppDynamics, but there's also a lot going on in the kernel itself that you cannot monitor. The automation needs to improve as well. As it stands, a lot of customization needs to happen before you can use AppDynamics."
"At this time, we don't have much visibility on the virtual environment, monitoring, and all other things. We have visibility only for database monitoring, and we have noticed performance impact when deploying database agents on the database server. We got to know this from AppDynamics support also that we should not deploy database agents from the database server. When agents are deployed on the same server and the database is monitored from there, we are not getting database server metrics. Therefore, we don't have those insights, and sometimes, we struggle because of that. They can improve this functionality so that we do not have a performance impact, and we can deploy anywhere. This would help us a lot. In terms of end-user monitoring, currently, it is not working for us because there are some complexities. It is a little complicated, and it takes a little bit of time to understand where you need to make changes. It would be very helpful if they can provide some template designs for end-user monitoring. When our servers are running on VMs, we don't get many insights from the VM side. I don't know whether it is possible to have visibility beyond the database, server, and application and whether there are some features where we can deploy AppDynamics on VMs as well. Such functionality would give us more control over storage, VM, OS, and database. It will also provide complete visibility of our hardware and software."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"There is a license needed to use the solution and it is expensive. The licensing model needs to improve."
"Take into consideration what you get for specific pricing models and how much it costs to add on things you may need later."
"AppDynamics Server Monitoring is an expensive solution."
"The pricing is very competitive."
"I would say the solution is affordable because it is widely used across financial service sectors."
"We do not have any issues with the price."
"It could be cheaper. It's a little cost prohibitive. There are so many features that also show a lot of value, but it’s not always easy to justify the cost."
"AppDynamics Database Monitoring is expensive. I rate it a seven to eight out of ten."
