Offers a wide range of functionalities for large enterprises but system requires expertise to implement and configure
In the past few years, the main challenge has been the annual maintenance cost. We've often replaced Oracle with Dynamics, which is cheaper than Oracle but still expensive for governments in Africa with limited budgets to sustain it. So, the main challenge is the cost versus the value. We don't get lower value with Dynamics 365, and I've seen governments implement other alternatives like Odoo, too. They don't see the value in paying millions of dollars in maintenance fees. Oracle needs to understand the reality of the situation. In the African market, Oracle is the least of the considerations. People don't even want to consider Oracle. They need to come up with something more cost-effective because people do not see the value in paying those maintenance fees. As a system integrator, I don't gain anything because most of the money gets transferred to Oracle. They need to relook at their licensing models. NetSuite is pretty rigid for a cloud-based suite. There are varying requirements to make changes to the configuration, which becomes a hassle compared to even Dynamics. They need to relax how they handle this. The licensing is also very complicated, with so many parameters that it's confusing, and sizing becomes confusing. Streamlining the licensing would be helpful so that it becomes transparent for the customer.

Powerful in-memory processing capabilities and advanced analytics, enhancing real-time decision-making, but with challenges in reaching SAP for support
Continuous improvement is essential for these systems to stay competitive and relevant in the market. Currently, for support, we rely on local implementers who act as intermediaries. This makes it challenging for me to reach out to SAP directly. If, for instance, I encounter any issues during the ongoing project, expanding it to other companies may pose a challenge without direct access to SAP support.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"ERP is a valuable feature of this product."
"Really scalable business application suite with good technical support and straightforward patching."
"Oracle E-Business Suite is a stable product."
"This is a world-class application that includes a lot of business processes from other ERPs that Oracle has acquired."
"Has good dashboard and drill-down features."
"E-Business Suite's best features are the standard process, the table dictionary, and the ability to work with the SQL language to correlate data."
"This solution offers customization. You'll have the ability to change and add your custom solutions and integrate them with the standard ones."
"The solution has strong financial models and a strong database."
"The user interface is very good. You can do any kind of reporting analytics from the platform."
"The feature I found most valuable in SAP HANA is modeling. I also like that the solution has good integration and you can integrate it with any system, even third-party systems."
"The initial setup is straightforward. It usually takes around eight months but it depends on a customer's requirements. We can spend a month or two customizing."
"The data in HANA is stored in columns rather than rows, which speeds up searches and aggregations."
"We are using the solution for the DW system. The primary function of the solution is for the database in memory."
"SAP HANA is a stable solution."
"The solution offers advanced features that the company was struggling to implement."
"Some functions have good performance."

Cons

"More flexibility in configuration related to the Payroll module, in order to easily implement the local legislation."
"They should have a nicer way to handle very high volumes of data because we deal with really high volumes, and sometimes, we end up with performance issues."
"The solution needs to be updated with modern technology as it currently runs on the Java platform, JWE, which is obsolete and requires you to need an API supported browser."
"The simplicity of the user experience needs to be improved tremendously."
"We don't like Oracle EBS because it is very old. Nowadays, all the systems are on the cloud and web-based. With Oracle EBS, you need a huge setup before installing it. You need a lot of servers. There are a lot of problems and bugs in the system. We have to move from Oracle EBS to another system. In terms of improvements, it can have better training for end users and better support."
"From the business processes, there are areas where you could streamline new processes."
"It's more expensive than other options due to licensing costs and core-based hardware."
"Reporting is a big area for improvement. It needs to provide the ability to extract data from the suite. Oracle has also been making a great effort to make E-Business Suite more user-friendly but there are still areas where a focus on User Experience would help."
"When we are using SAP HANA we have some difficulty with the customization. We would like to be able to add and make customized menus."
"High availability and disaster recovery are very poor in HANA."
"HANA could be improved by adding analytics and development models in the institution."
"There could be better management for faster updates, last year there were some changes in India to the e-invoicing feature."
"The releases need to be more stable. It's surprising to still encounter significant bugs after ten years of the product being available."
"The interface is a little bit hard to customize. You almost have to consult the SAP original developer to change it."
"The initial setup of SAP HANA is complex. We did the implementation of one site, and a global deployment will take another three to four years."
"Uses a large amount of RAM and is costly."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Oracle's pricing is on the higher end."
"Oracle generally gives a lot of discounts."
"It costs too much."
"This is a highly-priced application and would not be affordable for small or medium business domains."
"Whatever the products you use, you'll be paying a yearly maintenance price or a support price."
"Both the current projects and future projects should be defined well. Licensing should be done according to current and near future plans."
"I would rate the pricing a nine out of ten, with ten being very expensive."
"Pricing for Oracle E-Business Suite is seven out of ten. You must pay extra for maintenance and technical support, apart from standard license fees."
"SAP HANA is expensive, but unfortunately, we do not have any alternatives."
"The tool is expensive compared to other products, like Oracle R or Microsoft, but it offers a range of all the company's functions."
"I would rate the pricing of the solution a ten on ten. The pricing for on-prem SAP HANA is on a yearly basis and expensive. I am not aware of the actual pricing but it is based on 64 Gigabytes. For instance, if you consider $10,000 for 64 Gigabytes, then you can calculate the cost for Terabytes in case you have one. You will have to buy expensive hardware as well which is quite a lot."
"The licensing cost for SAP HANA is approximately $200 per user per month."
"Its licensing is expensive for SMEs and large enterprises alike."
"SAP HANA is more expensive than other solutions."
"The price is on the expensive side, at eight out of ten, with ten being expensive."
"Setup and licensing require planning and proper budgeting, as it is not cheap."
