An expensive next-generation data recovery and backup software solution with poor data restoration
Their restoration protocols could be better. I pulled all my clients out of their cloud mostly because I wasn't confident that they could restore out of the cloud. This was backed up by friends who had been burned by stuff like that. We moved away because of the lack of resources to restore from a potential catastrophic failure. It's challenging, and in some cases, they couldn't do it because they didn't have enough resources. For example, if there was a major disaster, and everybody needed their images out of the cloud, they couldn't give them to everybody.

Backup operations have become reliable and reporting now simplifies hybrid cloud protection
Veeam Data Platform has Veeam Enterprise Manager as well as Veeam ONE as valuable features, which allow us to generate various kinds of reports that are required for the customer. Instant VM Recovery is a good feature of the high-speed recovery features in Veeam Data Platform, and Continuous Data Protection (CDP) is also a good feature. Ransomware protection is a good feature added in Veeam Data Platform from version 12 onwards, and the ability to create immutable repositories is also a good feature in Veeam. The analytics part of Veeam Data Platform is a good solution because I have worked on various backup technologies such as EMC NetWorker and NetBackup. However, I have not used the analytical parts currently but will check it out. Streamlining processes as well as saving money are benefits that Veeam Data Platform provides for the end user, as it allows for application-aware backups and database backups without the need for various kinds of licenses that other backup software requires. Veeam offers socket-based licenses, instance-based licenses, and capacity-based licenses, which is a great feature.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable feature is the backups."
"The technical support has been very good."
"I like that they have some new devices that are simpler to use because they kind of tie right into the cloud."
"It lets you verify a backup with the least amount of effort."
"The most valuable feature of Veeam Backup Replication is application awareness. Additionally, the solution is user-friendly and it has been working very well."
"Continuous Data Protection is a game-changing technology."
"So far, it's worked quite well for our clients and I can't think of any places where the solution is lacking feature-wise."
"Veeam drastically lowered the strain on our hosted environment during backup windows all while decreasing the amount of time the backups require for completion."
"We had a vendor screw up a financial accounting program at tax season, a critical time for one of our customers, and we were able to roll the VM back in under five minutes, and users were back on the software in under 10 minutes from restore."
"For virtualization it's perfect."
"It is a stable and scalable solution that's easy to operate and restore."

Cons

"StorageCraft ShadowXafe should improve the on-premises console management controls and protection and recovery."
"I wouldn't use it. It failed me every time I tried to use it in a real-life scenario."
"Their restoration protocols could be better. For example, if there was a major disaster, and everybody needed their images out of the cloud, they couldn't give them to everybody."
"I think the backup and integration could be improved."
"Better reporting of replication job details in order to provide better insights when troubleshooting."
"However, this is a very critical environment, and if you do not enable other things, such as instant recovery or something similar, and you don't have the expertise, it can be painful for the customer."
"I think it would be great if it could back up from inside virtual machines (like Backup Exec) with compression."
"I think it would be great to have the ability to use WAN acceleration as an integrated feature for local backup storage to save a lot more space."
"The SME that helped us with the implementation would probably have more insight because he used it way more than we have. We just use it for making sure that our backups are done daily, and the replications are being performed between sites. We haven't had any issues at all with it other than the fact that there is a slight process to acquire additional licenses if we want to expand our number of hosts. That's because it is based on the number of cores and threads that are used."
"If they could add more support for all of the modern hypervisors, that would make Veeam much better and more flexible to work with. For example, there is no solution for VM to VM replication when it comes to Oracle OEM servers."
"Since the solution has many options, it is not easier to give tasks to schedule it."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"They are more expensive than some of the others out there. We have gone away from their cloud due to pricing."
"On a scale from one to ten, where one is cheap and ten is expensive, I rate the solution's pricing a five out of ten."
"We have increased our scalability while being able to free up senior resources from recovery activities. I estimate our overall savings to about $20,000 per year."
"It's a proper price, as it isn't an issue for what Veeam Backup & Replication is giving us. Obviously, we are paying licensing for our physical VMware environment. It also depends on how the VMware environment is on the side. We have a few very big nodes. So, we need a few licenses and maybe if people had more nodes and sockets and each node was managing less information, machine supplies could be different."
"The licenses are code-based or server-based for Veeam ONE. The last version is 12, and it is host-based, I don't like to move to a code-based solution."
"We are on an annual license for Veeam Backup Replication. We could expand or upgrade the license for the Office365 features. Next year we might go to a three-year plan for support on license."
"It is not expensive and I would rate it five out of ten."
"Since pricing is per socket, it is not expensive to add capacity as you go along."
"The product is not that expensive."

VMware SRM vs. Veeam vs. Zerto
Disaster recovery planning is something that seems challenging for all businesses. Virtualization in addition to its operational flexibility, and cost reduction benefits, has helped companies improve their DR posture. Virtualization has made it easier to move machines from production to…
