Great logs, useful APM, and useful visibility of relevant metrics
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution has offered increased visibility via logging APM, metrics, RUM, etc."
  • "Sometimes it’s difficult to customize certain queries to find specific things, specifically with the logging solution."

What is our primary use case?

We’re currently using logging, monitoring, metrics, APM, etc.

We've started to use קSLOs. However, it takes a bit of time to work through those.

RUM (Real User Monitoring) has been very useful. I have used this in the past to debug problems in production, which has been great.

We also want to start using synthetics and tracing more.

Our application currently runs in many different environments based on our customers' requirements. This allows us to see everything in one place and still filter by the environment as required, which is extremely useful.

How has it helped my organization?

The solution has offered increased visibility via logging APM, metrics, RUM, etc. Going from almost nothing to something that didn’t take a lot of time to set up has been great since we have so little time to spare

As a startup, we have limited resources, and no one has enough time for anything. There are so many easy integrations and things configurable by YAML making everything easy to set up without needing a full-time employee. Just configuring monitoring solutions is very desirable.

What is most valuable?

The APM is very useful for tracking down anything that’s gone wrong. I’ve been using it to make sure everything is working correctly after deployment, to make sure we don’t suffer performance degradation, and to track down anything that’s gone wrong in real-time

The logs are great and necessary for any application. Before this, our solution would have been to SSH into a machine and tail log files. This is untenable for many reasons, and one of the first things I wanted to change.

The RUM is useful for seeing how real users interact with our website.

What needs improvement?

Sometimes it’s difficult to customize certain queries to find specific things, specifically with the logging solution. I’ve used other logging platforms in the past that have extensive and mature query languages, which might not be super friendly to start out with, yet they can be very powerful. I wish there was more of an emphasis on that instead of the UI-based tooling that Datadog provides. Even though it is powerful on its own, UI-based design lacks the elegance, efficiency, and complexity that something like that can provide.

User friendly interface and integrations make it best in class
Pros and Cons
  • "The interface and the integrations make it so easy to connect to the cloud or to the on-premise environment."
  • "Datadog does not have the feature where you can monitor external websites or check the SSL secure for websites."

What is most valuable?

I like Datadog because it is so easy use, I can easily connect to public clouds, and I have a view of observability. In my opinion it's the best tool in the market.

I like the interface so much. The interface and the integrations make it so easy to connect to the cloud or to the on-premise environment. It has so many monitors for alerting. I like all the versions and especially the APM model, on which I did a lot more testing with my applications. I have made applications for testing the tool that is in the resource. The APM is the goal for me in the Datadog.

What needs improvement?

In terms of what could be improved, Datadog does not have the feature where you can monitor external websites or check the SSL secure for websites.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Datadog for the last 14 days.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In terms of stability, I don't have any problem with its stability or the website data. They have a solid infrastructure. I don't have any problems with that.

How was the initial setup?

It was simple to configure and to set up this tool.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have less experience with Zabbix than I have with Datadog, but I don't see Zabbix as a great tool for cloud specific monitoring because I cannot connect so easily to public clouds to gain all the information that I can in Datadog, which I can easily set up.

I have used Zabbix for 20 days for my personal tests and I really don't like it.

There is something that I liked with Zabbix, though. Zabbix is better for monitoring virtual machines. That's a feature that I liked. But everything else is awful. I can't have dashboards. I do not have integrations with some ITSM systems, like Jira or OTRS. It's awful because I need to have those integrations.

I would rate Zabbix a nine from one to ten for on premises environments. For cloud platforms, I rate this tool as a five, because of the complexity required to integrate it in other platforms.

What other advice do I have?

On a scale of one to ten, I would rate Datadog a nine, just because of the missing feature of checking websites.

Customizable, attractive panel design, and gives broad insight
Pros and Cons
  • "I have found some of the most valuable features to be the way things all come together that gives us a point of view that is useful. The panel is very beautiful and customizable."
  • "The installation is easy for me. However, if you are new to this solution it might not be so easy."

What is our primary use case?

I implement this solution for clients.

What is most valuable?

I have found some of the most valuable features to be the way things all come together that gives us a point of view that is useful. The panel is very beautiful and customizable. The configuration file was really helpful, we were able to configure the solution in the way we needed. The portability of this solution is more flexible than other competitors, allowing us to change cloud services when we want. We are not locked into a particular one.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have used CloudWatch previously and this solution is better at meeting all our needs.

How was the initial setup?

The installation is easy for me. However, if you are new to this solution it might not be so easy.

What about the implementation team?

I am an implementor, I did the implantation of the solution.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Datadog a nine out of ten.

The ingestion points are unlimited and support customization. We would like the averages of average issue to be fixed.
Pros and Cons
  • "The integration and configuration are incredibly simple. The SaaS offering is remarkably easy to set up, especially if you're coming from a Graphite environment or anything that uses a StatsD."
  • "The ingestion points are unlimited and support customization. We haven't had anything yet that we haven't been able to integrate with it."
  • "There are things about it that we would like to be fixed, such as it is taking averages of average. This results in data that we don't expect."

What is our primary use case?

  • Monitoring
  • Analytics
  • Tracing
  • APM

What is most valuable?

It's hosted. We don't have to do it, and they handle a large amount of data with backups and all of the other things that we no longer have to manage.

What needs improvement?

There are things about it that we would like to be fixed, such as it is taking averages of average. This results in data that we don't expect, but overall we are happy with it.

For how long have I used the solution?

Three to five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is incredibly stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have had no issues with scalability.

How is customer service and technical support?

We have needed technical support because we were dealing with averages of averages.

How was the initial setup?

The integration and configuration are incredibly simple. The SaaS offering is remarkably easy to set up, especially if you're coming from a Graphite environment or anything that uses a StatsD. Datadog is a custom StatsD client, and it adds additional functionality, like tags, etc. However, out-of-the-box should work with native StatsD, so it is incredibly easy to drop in replace if you are using StatsD for metrics.

What was our ROI?

In terms of employee time: While the instructor costs were transferred to Datadog, it freed up our engineers to work on things which were of valuable to our business rather than maintaining a service that we don't make money on.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It costs the same amount it would if we were hosting it ourselves, so we are incredibly happy with the cost.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did look at several vendors. What it came down to is we did not want to manage the metric services ourselves anymore, and Datadog matched what it cost for us to host it ourselves.

What other advice do I have?

Check out Datadog. It is awesome.

The ingestion points are unlimited and support customization. We haven't had anything yet that we haven't been able to integrate with it.

We have only used the SaaS offering, but not AWS nor on-premise.

Straightforward setup is impressive and SaaS model works well in multi-cloud environments
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution's SaaS model is easy to manage and works well in single- or multi-cloud environments."
  • "Graph filters for logs need to be set manually which works well for JSON but not for unstructured logs."

What is our primary use case?

Our company is transitioning to using the solution for monitoring and analytic services we provide to customers. Once fully rolled out, there will be 80-100 users companywide.

What is most valuable?

The solution's SaaS model is easy to manage and works well in single- or multi-cloud environments.

The Saas format can handle heterogeneous or multi-language applications much better than using a combination of tools.

What needs improvement?

Graph filters for logs need to be set manually which works well for JSON but not for unstructured logs.

Making structured logs for high-performance applications is over our heads so we had to dump some technical streams for our logs.

For how long have I used the solution?

I recently started using the solution.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable and passed an our internal assessment.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

We received product support through the sales department and they were helpful.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

The solution is better than what we previously used.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward which is impressive.

I rate setup an eight out of ten.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented the solution in-house and are continuing to roll it out.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Licensing is based on the retention period of logs and metrics.

What other advice do I have?

I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

I always have Datadog up to debug issues with integrations or to ensure that live campaigns are running smoothly.

We were building a real-time bidding exchange for digital out-of-home ads by providing the analytics and the infrastructure for the ecosystem. We not only facilitate the buys, but we also act as an ad server for the network and advertisers who put in their server requirements. It is very similar to the large online ad servers. In order to provide this real-time service, we had to be able to monitor and analyze a wide range of data points for the many media companies in their ad exchange.

We wanted to find an “out-of-the-box” metrics solution that would integrate easily with current systems. We found that Datadog included the integrations that we needed to get our monitoring solution up quickly. Additionally, we liked Datadog’s ability to perform customized metric monitoring, log critical events, and scale easily. I had scaled up open-source monitoring solutions once before, and it wasn’t fun. So when I had the opportunity to do it again, I said ‘No.’

On a daily basis, Datadog eliminates a lot of the back and forth with the media owners to find out what is going on, it is just a good visual tool for seeing the activity from each of the content management systems that we work with. It is an easy way to go in and get a feel of what is going on. Without Datadog, we would have to repeatedly spend time to reach out to each media owner directly to see if they are sending any requests that day.

As we moved toward a real-time system, it was important to understand whether our partner networks had reported all of their ads in a short period of time. We now use Datadog as a daily monitoring tool to get a feel for what networks are actively sending requests to their servers, what live campaigns are running smoothly and whether the right networks are requesting ads. I always have Datadog up on a daily basis to debug issues with integrations or just to make sure that live campaigns are running smoothly.

Each network that we work with has different requirements. In terms of connectivity of their networks, we are always dealing with different frequencies and rates of requests each day. The wide diversity in partners has made customization key since the monitoring needs for each partner varies drastically. There are days where we see weird trends of requests coming in. We are able to use Datadog’s custom graphs to catch the anomalies or concern areas in their system on a real-time basis.

Going forward, we are looking to create separate dashboards for each ad network that we work with. This will enable us to gain more detailed metrics for each individual media owner. We will be able to take these detailed metrics and use them to quickly identify potential problem areas, improving our ability to solve problems as soon as they are detected.

Good for monitoring, helps centralize data, and reduces costs
Pros and Cons
  • "With Datadog I can look at the health of the technology stack and services."
  • "Datadog could have a better business analysis module."

What is our primary use case?

The solution is primarily used for better understanding the health of applications, modern environments, and many other solutions, which are the main focus of Datadog and many other monitoring tools.

With Datadog specifically, I can look at the health of the technology stack and services, and also integrate multiple metric sources, security, business data, and much more. This makes it a real software solution for centralizing data and unifying monitoring silos in one place. Datadog is like a hub - not just a monitoring software.

How has it helped my organization?

The solution primarily has helped the organization by helping us better understand the health of applications, modern environments, et cetera.

We can see the health of the technology stack and services. We can also integrate multiple metric sources, security, business data, and much more. It centralizes data and unifies monitoring in one place. It's Helping reduce costs with other solutions, and also reduces costs with teams that might waste time with manual troubleshooting.

What is most valuable?

Understanding better the health of applications, modern environments, and many other solutions, is the main focus of Datadog and many other monitoring tools.

With Datadog I can look at the health of the technology stack and services. I can also integrate multiple metric sources, security, business data, and much more. It's great for centralizing data and unifying monitoring silos.

Datadog is a hub, not just a monitoring software. The biggest value of Datadog is looking at the big picture, not only one part of it.

What needs improvement?

Datadog could have a better business analysis module.

Other vendors have specific business collections and analyses. With Datadog, I don't see much of it. It's possible to do this with custom metrics, dashboards, etc. However, none of those are business-focused - and that is what is lacking in Datadog.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for two years.

What other advice do I have?

We use the SaaS version of the product.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud
