We use them to host a car parking system.
Technology & Digital Product Manager at a tech services company with 51-200 employees
Fairly priced, stable, and easy to set up
Pros and Cons
- "The ease of setting them up is valuable. It is easy to set them up."
- "Their support can be better. Getting to the right person for support is a challenge."
What is our primary use case?
How has it helped my organization?
We use Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers with pre-installed Microsoft Windows Server. It is just easier when they come already loaded. There is less for us to do.
We host our application on them. They are great for running our applications. We recently had to upgrade the specs of some of the servers due to the demands on the system. For example, where it used to be Dell R350 with hard drives, we are now expected to go with SSDs, but it deals with our applications very well.
We do not necessarily use a lot of its security and other features. We take it out of the box, put our application on it, and then just run it or install it on a device if needed.
With Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers, we now have more resilience. Previously, we used a PowerPC as a server. By using a dedicated PowerEdge Rack Server, there is resilience when using, for example, a RAID array.
Our in-house application runs directly on it. That is a big critical element, but the impact of these servers on our IT infrastructure is no different from another server.
Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers have helped to reduce unplanned production downtime by about 20%.
What is most valuable?
The ease of setting them up is valuable. It is easy to set them up.
What needs improvement?
Training needs to be improved. I feel we are not getting the best benefit out of the PowerEdge servers at the moment because we do not have in-depth knowledge on how to fully configure them. The PowerEdge servers are fine. It is our training that needs to be improved.
Their support can be better. Getting to the right person for support is a challenge.

For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers for eight or nine years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I have never seen any major issues with stability. They are stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Once we have deployed a server, we do not increase any specs on it, so we do not have too much experience with scalability. If we do need an improved or enhanced server, we will get that straight from Dell. We would not enhance RAM, SSD, or anything else on our own.
There are about eight people who may configure them. Once these servers go to the site, there are more people using them, but I do not know how many.
How are customer service and support?
Their support is usually very good, but getting to the right person is a challenge. They are good once we get to the right person or once somebody is dedicated to helping us, but getting to that point in the first place is a bit annoying.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
My predecessor was already using them, so I carried on ordering them. We do not have any experience with anything similar. We just stick with what we know. The only alternative that we use is a tower PC as a server. It is just a standard PC.
We did not consider public cloud servers before choosing PowerEdge servers. Our platform at the moment is not native to the cloud. It has a heavy data demand and bandwidth requirement, so the cloud was not necessarily within the scope of our product at the time. However, we are developing a cloud-native solution. That might be something we can consider moving forward.
We went for PowerEdge servers because of the price and specs. It is something that has been used by our team before I even joined it, so we continue to use it. The support from Dell is usually very good as well. So, it is a combination of price, specs, and support that makes us keep using Dell.
How was the initial setup?
It is easy to set them up. We could realize their benefits within a few months of deployment.
I am involved in their deployment as an assistant and not as the main person. Most times, it is straightforward, but it also depends on the spec that we get with different solid-state drives or hard drives. Sometimes, the RAID sets can be a bit more complex.
With regards to getting the server into a state where we can deploy our application, it takes a few hours. In a few hours, we can deploy the Windows operating system, do the RAID setup, and then it is ready for our in-house solution.
What about the implementation team?
It is usually a one-man job. I might provide some assistance, but typically, it is a one-man job.
What was our ROI?
We have potentially seen an ROI, but I would not be able to give a figure. We deploy our solutions onto those servers, and effectively, that is no longer our equipment, so we do not necessarily see what is going on with them.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
They are fairly priced.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers. I would advise having a good relationship with Dell, and they will support you above and beyond.
Overall, I would rate Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

IT manager at CNE
The components last a long time and I have never had to call support
Pros and Cons
- "I like the iDRAC feature. I have also seen long life from each part and haven't had to call support, as far as I remember. I use competitors like HPE and we need spare parts every year."
- "The BIOS interface could be improved; it is very poor. PowerEdge is very good overall, but if you compare the BIOS interface with HPE, it is not very good."
What is our primary use case?
I'm using the server for Exchange and it gives me good performance.
What is most valuable?
I like the iDRAC feature.
I have also seen long life from each part and haven't had to call support, as far as I remember. I use competitors like HPE and we need spare parts every year. I have been using this server for 10 years and haven't faced any problems with the hardware or performance.
What needs improvement?
The BIOS interface could be improved; it is very poor. PowerEdge is very good overall, but if you compare the BIOS interface with HPE, it is not very good. HPE's is very advanced but Dell's is very simple.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers for about 10 years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability is about a seven out of 10.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is scalable, but we are not planning to get more PowerEdge servers. We are planning to go with hyper-converged. We are looking to extend our environment and deploy a new DR site.
We have multiple locations and about 400 users.
How are customer service and support?
Their support is excellent, but here I'm referring to all our Dell products, because I haven't had to contact them about PowerEdge.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I didn't have a previous solution, but I work with HPE servers at the same time. There is no major difference between them in performance or specifications. I prefer Dell for its warranty, which is very good here in Egypt. I am able to extend my warranty for one or two years.
How was the initial setup?
For me, the setup was easy.
The only maintenance is cleaning it and adding hard disks.
What about the implementation team?
I did it, as a system admin, with my team of three people: technical support and our help desk team.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Dell is somewhat more expensive than HPE.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
In terms of money, if I compare a cloud system and an on-premises server like PowerEdge, if I rent the same type of product in the cloud for 10 years, it will cost more than if I get a PowerEdge server for five years.
What other advice do I have?
If you invest in your network, it will be advantageous.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Senior System Engineer at a computer software company with 51-200 employees
Scales easily by adding more servers, and setup is straightforward and fast
Pros and Cons
- "When it comes to energy consumption they're also very good. They don't use power because they're power-hungry, but because we use them very hard."
- "I don't know much about the new Intel CPUs, but they need to put more than two CPUs in the servers. It may be an Intel limitation, but I'm not sure."
What is our primary use case?
We use Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers powered by Intel for research calculations.
How has it helped my organization?
With Intel Xeon processors, the solution has helped improve our target workloads' performance by 50 percent at times, depending on the exact calculation we are doing.
What is most valuable?
It's great at handling high-performance workloads.
They have also done their job when it comes to security features. We haven't ever had a breach, although it is a closed network.
When it comes to energy consumption they're also very good. They don't use power because they're power-hungry, but because we use them very hard.
What needs improvement?
I don't know much about the new Intel CPUs, but they need to put more than two CPUs in the servers. It may be an Intel limitation, but I'm not sure.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have used Dell solutions for six years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We haven't had any downtime with them due to anything on Dell's side. So far, they haven't failed.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have hundreds of them, and adding as many as we can is as easy as the first one.
How are customer service and support?
The support has been great. We haven't needed it much because the servers just work. But when we had issues, I called Dell. If it was a malfunction of the hardware, we had a solution within a day, and that was usually because of my schedule, not Dell's schedule. I would tell them, "Okay, come tomorrow or the day after. That will be better for me."
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We used to have HP servers but they were horrible. We maintained them for about three years, but by the end of the three years, we didn't get all the features of the BIOS. The Dells, from day one, worked like a charm, with no additional fees or hidden costs, like we had with the HPs.
How was the initial setup?
It's easy to handle. You just put it in, connect it, and it works. The average time it takes me to set up a server and get it to work is about 15 minutes.
What was our ROI?
We have seen ROI compared to cloud solutions. Similarly, compared to the HPs that we didn't select, we don't need to handle and pet them all the time. We didn't need another system engineer to handle the computers. I was enough.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing is great; very competitive. That's the reason we bought hundreds of them.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We mainly evaluated HPs and Lenovos. Dell was the most cost-effective, power-efficient, and the easiest to handle.
What other advice do I have?
The solution is a great service. They do their job. It requires minimal effort from my side as a system engineer, with very few errors or malfunctions.
My advice is to buy them. They are really good servers. They're straightforward. You don't need to research hidden definitions in the BIOS. They're simple to handle.

This solution is reasonably priced and licenses are easy to acquire.
What other advice do I have?
The PowerEdge system management frameworks have enabled our business to progress towards full automation. This has freed up time to focus on different parts of the business, rather than constantly monitoring issues.
I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Network Administrator at a manufacturing company with 10,001+ employees
Effective storage solution that helped reduce our rack footprint and power consumption
Pros and Cons
- "This solution helped us reduce our rack footprint. It reduced our power consumption including size and weight."
- "We are leaning away from this particular product because Dell's VxRail solution makes us buy four nodes at a time which is not scalable. Other solutions such as Cisco offer more innovation on this front."
What is our primary use case?
I use a mixture of versions of this solution including R440 and R430. I also use FX2S for the blade chassis and FC630 and 640 for the actual blade servers.
We use the blade solution as a host cluster environment for virtualization of multiple servers and the standalone R440 and 430 for best practice when we don't want to necessarily complete virtualization. We use physical servers in different locations in order to have different firewall contexts, so we can push data across. We use the physical servers as simulated distant ends in a test environment out at the actual sites.
How has it helped my organization?
This solution has helped us reduce our rack footprint. It reduced our power consumption including size and weight. For example, we could increase the number of systems we were deploying in Iraq if we needed to.
The solution decreased the time it takes to deploy systems due to needing less hardware. When we started to manage all of our servers in a cluster, it increased our oversight management. Ease of management with a smaller hardware footprint has equaled faster deployment.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature of this solution is the fact that it is a reliable server and does the job we implemented it to do.
What needs improvement?
We are leaning away from this particular product because Dell's VxRail solution makes us buy four nodes at a time which is not scalable. Other solutions such as Cisco offer more innovation on this front.
The switching for this solution is lagging behind other products. Cisco has built the best iOS that other solutions need to match. Dell has recently done an overhaul to allow networking switches but it still can't scale the way we need it to.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for seven years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
This is a stable solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Blade servers are not scalable anymore.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is not complex but it is counterintuitive, specifically the chassis. The FX2S chassis holds up to four half widths blades and has a pre-built two-module network card and eight ports that mirror each other.
The PCIe slots on the back of the chassis are hardwired and challenging to set up.
We did not use the automated server of OS deployment features. We installed the hardware and then installed the software manually. We are a dark site. Dell could be a little bit more friendly to dark site management. There's a huge customer base out there that just cannot utilize a lot of their solutions in a classified environment.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing for this solution is reasonable. We pay a basic premium with a military premium on top of that.
What other advice do I have?
This solution has met my needs. We have not run with the latest versions of this solution due to security concerns.
This solution has helped me to view the health and status of our environment in a user-friendly way. The TPM features have helped us a lot because, from a configuration management standpoint, there are trusted platform modules that operate consistently.
For anyone considering this solution, I would recommend looking into all the finer details to understand how it could be integrated. Ensure every facet of the solution is going to meet your needs.
I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Hybrid Cloud

IT Manager at a engineering company with 51-200 employees
A simple and scalable solution that is easy to use and enables users to pull out elements and change them easily
Pros and Cons
- "We can pull out elements and change them ourselves."
- "The product must provide more options to add GPUs to the machines."
What is our primary use case?
My organization uses the product as a simple server.
How has it helped my organization?
We implemented the product for its simplicity and scalability. We wanted a simple system that we could scale up if needed. Currently, we only have a few servers. It's easy to change them. The components can be changed around.
What is most valuable?
The simplicity of the bars is valuable. We can pull out elements and change them ourselves. It saves us time. We do not open the machine much. It leads to less maintenance efforts. We can also use components of other brands. It is easy to use.
What needs improvement?
The product must provide more options to add GPUs to the machines. It's always a challenge. If we don't think about it when buying the machine, we cannot do it afterward.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using the solution for 20 years. We use R730 and R630.
How are customer service and support?
The support is good. The support was better ten years ago. Now, we have to do more things ourselves. Ten years ago, the team focused on solving the issues first instead of finding who was to blame.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We used HPE some time ago. The machines are the same, but the support provided by Dell is better.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was easy.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The product's pricing is not good. It's always a winning factor for other solutions. It is not the most affordable tool.
What other advice do I have?
I hope PowerEdge's Cyber Resilient Architecture approach is sufficient. Once, we had a problem because the rack was not updated. It's annoying that I didn't get informed by Dell that we had to update it. Communication should be better for security reasons.
I never thought about energy consumption, but we all must decrease our power consumption. It was never an issue for us, though. The tool is efficient for what we use it for. It is scalable till the end. The product lasts for seven years. We can use the machine for a long time.
The solution has helped reduce unplanned production downtime. We have a cluster. If one fails, the other one takes over. The OpenManage console has affected our IT staff’s productivity. We use it a lot. It's a good tool to access our service. The tool saves 25% of our time.
Overall, I rate the product an eight out of ten.

I have been working with Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers for almost over ten years.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
PowerEdge handles the evolving needs of high-performance workloads quite well. Its flexibility allows us to attain the required performance and integrate new technologies seamlessly. The scalability within our current environment ensures that we don't hit the limits of the platform easily, eliminating the need to transition to another platform for now.
How are customer service and support?
Dell's tech support has been good overall. While we rarely need assistance, finding the right entry point into their support system can be a bit challenging. However, when required, our account manager and available resources help navigate the process effectively.
What was our ROI?
We have seen a substantial return on investment with Dell PowerEdge. The servers' stability, ease of management, and standardized operations have reduced staffing needs and operational costs. Considering factors like energy efficiency and pricing, it has been a valuable investment for our organization.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I find the pricing for Dell PowerEdge reasonable for our company. However, licensing, in general, can be challenging to manage effectively. It would be beneficial for companies like Dell to reconsider their approach to licensing certain aspects of their equipment.
What other advice do I have?
Overall, I would rate Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers as a nine out of ten.

It system engineer at a consultancy with 11-50 employees
Capable of handling the evolving needs of high-performance workloads
Pros and Cons
- "The solution's stability is good...The solution's scalability is good."
- "Considering from a hardware perspective, some areas of concern were network cards on the models we had in our organization, which were fairly inaccessible, so we had to remove the whole motherboard and, basically, the whole system to get rid of or swap a network card."
What is our primary use case?
I use Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers in general IT infrastructure for all purposes, including virtualization and as cluster nodes with AMD's chipset drivers since there is a broad amount of cost involved for cluster nodes instead of just smart costs.
How has it helped my organization?
With Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers, my company has entered a new generation of hardware and possibilities and is happy to use them.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable features of the solution are its integration with OpenManage Enterprise, a unified management system, a management interface, and its function as a working connectivity management platform that helps with areas like deployment.
What needs improvement?
Considering from a hardware perspective, some areas of concern were network cards on the models we had in our organization, which were fairly inaccessible, so we had to remove the whole motherboard and, basically, the whole system to get rid of or swap a network card. The aforementioned aspect can be considered for improvement. Everything else in the solution seems to be completely fine.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers for three or four years. My company is a customer of the product.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution's stability is good.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution's scalability is good.
How are customer service and support?
The enterprise support provided by Dell is good, especially the support for servers, which is an area where our organization has no complaints yet. If something is broken in the solution and has to be repaired, my organization has seen that the very next day, Dell's support team has always worked on it. There are some small issues related to the support offered by Dell, but it is okay to have such small issues that need to be refined, considering there are many generations of the product released during the product development phase.
I rate the technical support a nine out of ten.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
In our company, the introduction of Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers helps replace cluster notes primarily in the first batch and later on certain areas of our general infrastructure, like virtualization.
What was our ROI?
With the product's OpenManage Enterprise part, my company has obviously saved money and time in computing, workflows, and jobs. I am pretty sure my company has saved a lot of money and time with the use of the product.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The solution's prices are good, especially considering what you get to use. I have no complaints with the pricing model of the solution. The licensing aspect of the solution is also fine. My organization is happy with the product's prices since the whole package deal offered by the product is more than fine in terms of pricing.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
My company did not evaluate any other solutions available in the market against Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers since we were just involved in the phase of testing the systems out, and we were happy with the results, especially when considering the product as a benchmark against other tools. No real tests were conducted in my organization with any other product, so we decided to proceed with Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers.
What other advice do I have?
My company was not looking to address any challenges when implementing rack servers in our environment. My company needed new hardware to replace old ones, and we looked at what was available on the market and decided to have a proof of concept with the hardware provided by Dell. After my company got to test Dell's hardware, and once we were happy with it, we decided to order Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers.
Using the product's OpenManage console has certainly affected our company's IT staff's productivity, especially when working with the system management interface.
With the product, our company could save a lot of time since there's a need for only one or a single configuration to be rolled out on all of the devices.
As per my assessment, Dell PowerEdge Cyber Resilient Architecture approach to security in terms of silicon-based root of trust, signed firmware updates, user access security, and supply chain integrity is something we need in the IT industry. It's no secret that more and more cyber-attacks have been taking place, and taking precautions at a hardware level is as important as any other precautions taken.
I cannot comment on the area related to energy consumption in Dell PowerEdge Servers.
Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers can handle the evolving needs of high-performance workloads in our company since we could use the product in the cluster, especially with high performance, which has worked out fairly well. I think the product offers better scalability than what we had before, but we need to consider that it is a newer product in the market.
I don't know how the use of the product has impacted the overall flexibility of our organization's operations and business.
I think there is a lot of stuff to improve in the product. The product itself is solid, and it is genuinely good. It is a good hardware to begin with in general.
I rate the overall tool an eight to nine out of ten.
