These are core switches, so they handle the bulk of our network traffic from servers to the endpoints as well as SAN traffic.

I like the simplicity and warranty. We are a small shop, and being simple is best
What is our primary use case?
How has it helped my organization?
They switch. They are capable of much more sophistication than we are able to support. The addition of Aruba looks promising.
What is most valuable?
Simplicity and warranty. We are a small shop, and being simple is best. These are basic managed switches and the lifetime warranty is great.
What needs improvement?
It would be nice to have a common OS across models so that they could be managed together. But that is more in line with higher production equipment.

They support both fiber-optic and copper modules. They should enable certain features on certain frequencies.
Valuable Features:
5400r are the core switches. These are recently launched and they are the newer version of the old 5400 series of switches, and we use them extensively in most of our projects as core switches. They're very, very robust, and we know if there's any major problems on these kind of switches here.
Improvements to My Organization:
They support different types of modules: fibre-optic and copper modules. They offer very good value for the price, and they come with some excellent XP support platforms on the background: the warranties, the care-packs, and all of that. People like these controllers compared to some of the competing products.
With the 5400R, it's a very competitive price, and the product is very stable. We've seen a lot of people buying these products. Frankly, we've not seen any migrations, but people are buying it because of the good price and stability. It has got the right features for the kind of markets we are targeting.
Room for Improvement:
They should enable certain features on certain frequencies.
Deployment Issues:
We had no issues with deployment.
Stability Issues:
There are more than 50 of such switches we have deployed, and we are hardly facing any problems with these switches. Again, they're very stable.
Scalability Issues:
If a client wants to start with a lower number of modules, they can do that. And if they want to add more modules, they can do that as well and still use the same modules.
Initial Setup:
The 5400 is fairly simple, not very complex. But it needs proper training and certification otherwise. We've seen people deploying this product, some of the companies in Dubai, and they didn't do it the proper way.

The customer support is very good, you create a ticket and they get back to you quickly with a response.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I was using other solutions previously, such as Fortinet, Cisco, and Juniper Switches. I prefer FortiSwitch more than HP Switches because FortiSwitch has more capabilities that are not supported by any other solution, for example, FortiLink. However, HPE is a very good company and is very large.
How was the initial setup?
The initial installation is easy.

- "These switches are very stable, to date I have not experienced any issues."
- "Technical support needs improvement, as the response time could be better."
What is our primary use case?
I am a service provider for my customers.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature is stability.
What needs improvement?
The UI on the web console needs improvement.
The routing settings could be made easier to deploy.
Technical support needs improvement, as the response time could be better.
I would like to see this solution support SDN. It should have more SDN compatibility.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using these switches for over ten years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
These switches are very stable, to date I have not experienced any issues.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
This is a scalable product and we have 40 engineers using it.
How are customer service and technical support?
Technical support is very slow to respond.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is a little bit complex.
Depending on the complexity, it can take up to three hours to deploy each switch.
What other advice do I have?
Overall, this is a good product except for the support.
I would recommend this product aside from the troubleshooting because the service is awful.
I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Fast, stable, and comparable to other options on the market
Pros and Cons
- "The speed is very fast."
- "The solution is very comparable to Huawei, however, it could be more scalable. Huawei is easier to scale."
What is most valuable?
The solution is great in the sense that it has all of the capabilities of all of the other switches and it is very competitive in the market.
The solution is very stable.
The speed is very fast.
It can scale as well as other switches on the market.
The pricing is very good. It's less expensive than, for example, Cisco.
The installation is very easy.
What needs improvement?
The solution could always improve its stability. It's pretty stable already, however.
The solution is very comparable to Huawei, however, it could be more scalable. Huawei is easier to scale.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using the solution for several years at this point.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is very stable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's very reliable in terms of the performance it offers us.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution can scale well. It's comparable to other switches on the market in terms of its scalability potential. If a company needs to expand it, it should be able to do so.
We have 200 users on the solution currently. We do plan to continue to use the product.
How are customer service and technical support?
I've been in touch with technical support in the past and have found them to be very helpful and responsive. We're satisfied with the level of service we receive when we contact them.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I use a variety of different solutions. I work with Aruba Switches and Ubiquiti Switches as well as Cisco and Huawei Switches.
How was the initial setup?
The process of installing the solution is not overly complex or difficult. It's very easy and extremely straightforward. A company won't struggle with the process at all.
The deployment is very fast. It doesn't take much time. Of course, different requirements mean that users need to take into account different configurations.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
One of its greatest selling features is its price. It's very cheap - much cheaper than Cisco. That, coupled with its general comparable capabilities to other items on the market make it a very attractive option.
What other advice do I have?
I'm not sure which version of the solution we are currently using.
When you compare it to other switches, there are no real big differences. It may have a few different specifications here or there, however, largely, it's comparable to everything else that is also on the market.
In general, on a scale from one to ten, I would rate the solution at an eight. I've been largely quite pleased with its overall capabilities so far.
I'd recommend the solution to other companies and users.

Director at a tech services company with 501-1,000 employees
Good initial setup and decent scalability, but is expensive
Pros and Cons
- "The scalability is very good."
- "The solution is a bit expensive."
What is our primary use case?
We primarily sell the solution to our client base. The customers are typically telecom operators or enterprise-level companies. It's used primarily for data center applications and connectivity solutions.
What is most valuable?
The initial setup isn't too bad.
The scalability is very good.
What needs improvement?
The solution is a bit expensive.
The stability needs to be improved upon. It's not as good as it could be.
The solution should offer more automation. It's not good compared to Cisco, or any other brand.
The company needs to offer much better local support. Right now, it's not great in terms of technical support.
For how long have I used the solution?
We've been dealing with the product for a long time. It's been over a decade. Likely, we've been selling HP for 12 years at this point.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability isn't ideal. It could be much better. It's an aspect of the solution they could work on.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scalability is not an issue. The solution expands well. If a company needs to build it ut and scale it, they should be able to do so pretty easily.
I'm not sure how many people within our company actually use the solution, or how many of our clients have it. I don't know that we have around 20 technical people that work with the solution.
How are customer service and technical support?
I don't find the technical support aspect of the solution very helpful. I'm not satisfied with the level of support provided.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We're also using Cisco switches. We also an Indian brand known as Edge Appeal.
This solution lacks the automation that Cisco, for example, offers.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is pretty straightforward for the most part. It's not too complex.
I didn't personally handle the implementation myself, as I'm not very technical. I couldn't comment on how long the deployment takes as I wasn't directly involved.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
You do need to pay quite a bit for the license.
The pricing could be a little bit less, to be honest. As a product that's made in Taiwan, you would assume it would be cheaper than it is.
What other advice do I have?
We're resellers of the solution.
I'm not really on the technical side.
I'd recommend the solution for the most part. It's fine to use.
Overall, the solution is average, which is why I would rate it at a five out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Founder and Principal Analyst at a tech services company with 1,001-5,000 employees
They have focused on building a highly programmable and open OS, but the technical support needs improvement.
What is most valuable?
They've had a commitment over the last five years to be amongst the most open out there. They are very easy to deploy and manage, and offer a lifetime warranty. Most other vendors who have tried this, have shied away from it. I think recently they have focused on building a highly programmable and open OS so you can create a very large ecosystem around it.
What needs improvement?
Building a bigger ecosystem around them, not just wired/wireless, but there's being able to bring other HP areas such as server and storage groups. At the moment, they operate as separate business areas, and they could clean that up a bit. Also, the technical support needs improvement,
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
They've been doing it for 15 years and have a very reliable product. The fact that they offer a lifetime warranty in some ways is a testament to the stability because if they were constantly failing and churning them out, it would be reflected in their financials.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Since the acquisition of 3COM they have data center equipment that can scale to the largest data centres out there. I think they were the first to offer 40GB and 100GB. This is some big iron stuff.
How is customer service and technical support?
They've had their ups and downs. I think this is one area they can improve in. For a while, you used to get thrown into the queue with printers and all sorts of other stuff. So they've fixed that, and it's better, but still needs to be improved.
How was the initial setup?
It's easy to get going. You can unbox it, plug it in and have it running quickly, but if you go into the advanced settings it can take longer.
What other advice do I have?
They've got a good product, but there's still room for improvement. I would be insistent that they help you integrate it with the non-HP services you have through their professional services.
