What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Huawei OceanStor is stable, it has high availability.

How are customer service and support?

We have local support in Tanzania, they give us great support.

I rate the technical support from Huawei OceanStor a five out of five.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used other solutions, such as Dell and Cisco. The main difference is a matter of compatibility. Most Dell storage, have compatible with the new processors. Huawei uses its own company processor, which is not as compatible with our customers' needs.

How was the initial setup?

Huawei OceanStor could improve the deployment stage, configuration, and documentation. It is difficult. Huawei OceanStor is not similar to Cisco or Dell. The documentation or procedures is not readily available to the customers.

I would rate the difficulty level of Huawei OceanStor a three out of five.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing depends on the features the customer wants, such as storage, RAM, and processors, but in general, Huawei is much cheaper compared to Dell and Cisco.

I rate the price of Huawei OceanStor a four out of five.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Huawei OceanStor a ten out of ten.

Reliable solution offers good IOPS and energy efficiency
Pros and Cons
  • "Huawei OceanStor offers good IOPS and is reliable and energy-efficient."
  • "Huawei is much cheaper compared to Dell, offering a competitive price that makes companies consider their options."
  • "Based on what we were quoted, the stated capacity was not a true reflection of the actual capacity."
  • "Based on what we were quoted, the stated capacity was not a true reflection of the actual capacity. The data store ran out of space, and Huawei had to send a new unit."

What is our primary use case?

Huawei OceanStor is mainly used as a SAN in our organization's data management process.

What is most valuable?

Huawei OceanStor offers good IOPS and is reliable and energy-efficient. It provides a decent device for data scalability.

What needs improvement?

Based on what we were quoted, the stated capacity was not a true reflection of the actual capacity. The data store ran out of space, and Huawei had to send a new unit. I would like to see improvements similar to what VMware is doing for SRM.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Huawei OceanStor for a few years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would give Huawei OceanStor an eight or nine out of ten. Other than the data store running out of space, I haven't had any issues with the technology.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

In terms of expanding and adding additional units, I would rate scalability as eight.

How are customer service and support?

I have dealt with Dell support as well, and I would say Huawei support is a six out of ten compared to Dell. Huawei took longer to respond and send a new device when something critical happened.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have only used Dell before Huawei, and the switch was made based on pricing.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was difficult, taking about 48 hours for installation and a week for configuration.

What about the implementation team?

Three engineers from our internal team were involved in the implementation process.

What was our ROI?

Huawei is much cheaper compared to Dell, offering a competitive price that makes companies consider their options.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is brilliant. Other technologies are often overpriced. Huawei is priced competitively, encouraging companies to consider it over other products.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We also get competitive quotes from Dell for equivalent storage space.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend Huawei OceanStor since it offers decent quality at a good price. I would rate the product an eight out of ten.

Good stability and price-to-performance ratio is quite impressive
Pros and Cons
  • "The performance and ease of management are the most valuable features."
  • "I would like to see more integration features with different platforms."

What is our primary use case?

The OceanStor is a versatile solution that can be used for general purposes, such as an all-flash for high-speed systems or as backup storage. It is ideal for various IT environments.

What is most valuable?

The performance and ease of management are the most valuable features. Additionally, the price-to-performance ratio is quite impressive.  It's really easy to manage, and the price is quite low for the performance you are getting. Customers appreciate these features the most.

What needs improvement?

I would like to improve certain things in Huawei OceanStor. Unfortunately, due to the US ban on Chinese technologies, Huawei is unable to develop plugins or cooperate with vendors like Veeam and VMware. This is causing customers to miss out on certain features, but it's currently impossible to improve.

In the next release, I would like to see more integration features with different platforms. Due to restrictions imposed by the US government, Huawei is currently unable to develop plugins for OceanStor support.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Huawei OceanStor for eleven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is impressive. We have sold hundreds of storage devices, and we didn't face any outages or problems with the upgrades. The stability of their own developed SMP disks is incredible. The failure rate is really low. I would rate stability a ten out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution and can accommodate additional storage devices, disks, and shelves with ease. It doesn't take more than ten minutes to scale it. I would rate the scalability ten out of ten.

We have more than 100 open sources and more than 50 customers using them.

How are customer service and support?

I have contacted the customer service team many times. When I compare it to other vendors like IBM, Lenovo, and others, I would say that Huawei's support is one of the best. They respond quickly, analyze the problem efficiently, and provide spare parts easily. This is something we really appreciate.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward and easy, especially when working with the storage arrays and familiar with the management. You can be quick with it. Generally, it takes about 30 minutes to deploy the storage rack physically.

It is on-premises, but it has connectivity for storage to the cloud. However, we don't use the cloud since we are in the EU, so we use the on-premises solution.

What about the implementation team?

Usually, for physical installations, you need two people. Some of the parts can be really heavy to put in the rack, but for deployment, including the software, only one person is usually required. However, we generally have two or three people available in case one of them is sick or leaves the company, so we can still manage it.

The solution can be deployed by either an admin or an engineer because the structure is easy to manage. Even a management person can do it, but they may be lost if something more difficult comes up. So I would say the engineer or admin person would be okay for deploying the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Usually, the license is included in the basic bundles. Some parts of the license are additional, but mostly everything customers need is included in the basic bundle. Some customers use advanced licenses for duplication and compression, and there are three or four different licenses available that distinguish the duplication ratios. But, in general, most customers use the basic license bundle. Also, all licenses on the Huawei storage rates are not limited to capacity, so if you buy them at the beginning, you don't have to extend or buy additional licenses when you scale out.

There are extra costs when you buy certification licenses for higher deduplication ratios or Hyper Metal features to make reflective storage clustering. But the price of the license is quite low, so it's not something special or expensive. Most customers spend several hundred or maybe a few thousand euros on these additional licenses. In the overall price of the storage rate, it's perfectly negligible.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise customers to look at the old flash, and new flash systems because they are great in price, performance, and features. They should go with the low end if they want something for backups.

Overall, I would rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Capture all databases, take data backups and replicate data efficiently
Pros and Cons
  • "There is a 50% code reduction."

    What is most valuable?

We are using Snapshot switches, which capture all our databases and help us take data backups. We use these snapshots in our development environment, troubleshooting, and R&D. Additionally, the application feature allows us to replicate data efficiently, which greatly enhances performance.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Huawei OceanStor for three years. We are using the latest version of the solution.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the solution’s stability a ten out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    It is scalable.

I rate the solution’s scalability a nine out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

    Support is good.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

    How was the initial setup?

It is very easy because we have to hire professional services. They locate us for data science and any other patching and firmware activities, and their engineers do these activities. Complete deployment takes a month in total.

    What about the implementation team?

Deployment was done by a third party.

    What was our ROI?

There is a 50% code reduction.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is not expensive. The storage is not expensive, like IBM storage. As soon as the support of your Optus Storage is very low, there's a financial benefit for us.

I rate the product’s pricing a ten out of ten, where one is expensive, and ten is cheap.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Offers better price and features compared to its competitors
    Pros and Cons
    • "It is easy to implement or install the tool."
    • "When it comes to the technical support team, I feel that the response time is an area with certain shortcomings where improvements are required."

What is our primary use case?

I can recommend the product for companies where there is a need for ERPs or if it needs to be used in the retail sector, departmental stores, the banking sector, big government organizations, and in the defense sector.

    What is most valuable?

The solution's most valuable features are the active gateway and OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage, which can manage seven out of eight controllers and latency.

    What needs improvement?

In the storage part, OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage is the best in Pakistan since all of the major banks, big government organizations, big defense organizations, and all others are satisfied with its performance. OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage is the best among all the other storage regarding NetApp, Dell, and EMC.

When it comes to the technical support team, I feel that the response time is an area with certain shortcomings where improvements are required.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Huawei OceanStor for seven to eight years. I operate as a distributor for Huawei.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support for the solution is very good. Huawei, in our region, has more than 2,000 employees in the office, and they mostly have post-sales engineers for storage, servers, and networks. Huawei also trains its partner engineers on the storage it offers. If a customer faces any problem, then a partner engineer will first resolve it. If an issue is not resolved in the tool, then Huawei engineers get involved, and the case gets lodged with Huawei's tech team, after whom a Huawei engineer will come. The partner, a tech team, and then a Huawei engineer get involved in the support process. I rate the technical support an eight out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have already worked with Oracle's storages, specifically small ones that are DAS-like storages, EMC VNX 300GB, Dell EMC VNXe 3200, and EMC CX4 and AX4 storages, and at that time, I was doing the post-sales work. Now, I am on the presales and business development side.

My distributor deals with Dell, Lenovo, and Juniper. In the storage part, my company deals with Dell, Lenovo, and Huawei. I deal with Huawei's unified storage, Huawei All-Flash Storage, Huawei OceanStor Pacific, and Huwaei OceanProtect.

Speaking about Dell PowerStore, I would say that my recommendations for a particular product always depend on the requirements of the customer. If a customer wants Dell, then such a customer will always choose Dell-based tools. You can suggest which brand you want to a customer, but they will only choose a tool after they are convinced that the solution can be useful for them.

    How was the initial setup?

It is easy to implement or install the tool.

Frankly speaking, I am not into the post-sales side. I manage the pre-sales area. I have heard from my colleagues in the post-sales department that the tool is easy to implement.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Huawei's prices are very good compared to those of its competitors. NetApp offers tools, but my company has faced some challenges in terms of pricing. Huawei's price is better than that of Dell EMC and all the other major brands. The product offers voltages meant for European and American brands. The tool has similar technology to that of every other product. In Pakistan, most customers are moving from Dell EMC to Huawei because of the difference in costs and the features that both provide.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend the product to my customers based on their requirements. Huawei OceanStor has different models under its portfolio.

If any department store wants to implement the database or ERP solution, then OceanStor Dorado 2000 or OceanStor Dorado 3000 can be suggested to such people depending on their requirements related to the storage. If there is a banking sector, where there are huge transactions, we recommend OceanStor Dorado 5000, OceanStor Dorado 6000 or OceanStor Dorado 8000.

I believe that in terms of the feature that needs to be added to the product, anti-ransomware functionality has already been added to the solution's storage part.

    The product is good.

I rate the tool a ten out of ten.
