The OceanStor is a versatile solution that can be used for general purposes, such as an all-flash for high-speed systems or as backup storage. It is ideal for various IT environments.
Good stability and price-to-performance ratio is quite impressive
Pros and Cons
- "The performance and ease of management are the most valuable features."
- "I would like to see more integration features with different platforms."
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
The performance and ease of management are the most valuable features. Additionally, the price-to-performance ratio is quite impressive. It's really easy to manage, and the price is quite low for the performance you are getting. Customers appreciate these features the most.
What needs improvement?
I would like to improve certain things in Huawei OceanStor. Unfortunately, due to the US ban on Chinese technologies, Huawei is unable to develop plugins or cooperate with vendors like Veeam and VMware. This is causing customers to miss out on certain features, but it's currently impossible to improve.
In the next release, I would like to see more integration features with different platforms. Due to restrictions imposed by the US government, Huawei is currently unable to develop plugins for OceanStor support.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with Huawei OceanStor for eleven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability is impressive. We have sold hundreds of storage devices, and we didn't face any outages or problems with the upgrades. The stability of their own developed SMP disks is incredible. The failure rate is really low. I would rate stability a ten out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is a scalable solution and can accommodate additional storage devices, disks, and shelves with ease. It doesn't take more than ten minutes to scale it. I would rate the scalability ten out of ten.
We have more than 100 open sources and more than 50 customers using them.
How are customer service and support?
I have contacted the customer service team many times. When I compare it to other vendors like IBM, Lenovo, and others, I would say that Huawei's support is one of the best. They respond quickly, analyze the problem efficiently, and provide spare parts easily. This is something we really appreciate.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is straightforward and easy, especially when working with the storage arrays and familiar with the management. You can be quick with it. Generally, it takes about 30 minutes to deploy the storage rack physically.
It is on-premises, but it has connectivity for storage to the cloud. However, we don't use the cloud since we are in the EU, so we use the on-premises solution.
What about the implementation team?
Usually, for physical installations, you need two people. Some of the parts can be really heavy to put in the rack, but for deployment, including the software, only one person is usually required. However, we generally have two or three people available in case one of them is sick or leaves the company, so we can still manage it.
The solution can be deployed by either an admin or an engineer because the structure is easy to manage. Even a management person can do it, but they may be lost if something more difficult comes up. So I would say the engineer or admin person would be okay for deploying the solution.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Usually, the license is included in the basic bundles. Some parts of the license are additional, but mostly everything customers need is included in the basic bundle. Some customers use advanced licenses for duplication and compression, and there are three or four different licenses available that distinguish the duplication ratios. But, in general, most customers use the basic license bundle. Also, all licenses on the Huawei storage rates are not limited to capacity, so if you buy them at the beginning, you don't have to extend or buy additional licenses when you scale out.
There are extra costs when you buy certification licenses for higher deduplication ratios or Hyper Metal features to make reflective storage clustering. But the price of the license is quite low, so it's not something special or expensive. Most customers spend several hundred or maybe a few thousand euros on these additional licenses. In the overall price of the storage rate, it's perfectly negligible.
What other advice do I have?
I would advise customers to look at the old flash, and new flash systems because they are great in price, performance, and features. They should go with the low end if they want something for backups.
Overall, I would rate the solution a nine out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Overall, the solution's pricing was cheaper. We need to pay for the solution's license. Users can configure the licenses based on their requirements.
What other advice do I have?
We used Huawei OceanStor as purely backend storage. The solution was used as block storage, which contributes to the processing timeline. The solution's performance was good and impacted our data accessibility. I would recommend the solution to other users.
