Easy to set up and provides an auto-scaling feature
Pros and Cons
  • "SAP has an auto-scaling feature, but Azure doesn't."
  • "The documentation isn't clear enough."

What needs improvement?

The documentation isn't clear enough. There are a few native services that are available for increasing the IOPS. We can either go for the database storage striping to improve the IOPS for the HWCCT requirement, or we can go for the data volume partitioning, which is available with HANA for increasing the IOPS.

It would help during maintenance to add new storage due to the data growth. It would be easy to go for the data volume partitioning feature with HANA. It's available even with other databases, but there's no comparison with the different features.

There are a few features that are in-built and available with SAP. When it comes to the on-premises solution, we used to go with those options. When it comes to the cloud, most people compare it to their past experience with the on-premises environment rather than the new cloud solutions. They might have an in-house benchmarking comparison or test results for those things, but it would be good if they published that. It would be very helpful for us when we need to take a particular call, or when we need to go for data volume partitioning or data striping.

In Azure, files can be downloaded and easily repurposed based on our solutions, which is lacking in AWS and in GCP.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used this solution for the past seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

With Azure, there are a lot of tools available for monitoring SAP-related information. When it comes to AWS, the infrastructure isn't specific to SAP. The monitoring and backup solutions that are available with Azure are missing with AWS.

For example, take a case for HCM enrollment. For Sonic, you need to go with the SBD devices. It should be separate. The SBD devices need to be provisioned with the three nodes with AWS. We have a fencing agent in Azure, which would be cost effective, rather than provisioning three additional VMs. It's a minimal cost, but there are additional loads which need to be done on top of it.

I would rate the stability as nine out of ten. Almost all of the public cloud providers provide the same kind of stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is good.

SAP has an auto-scaling feature, but Azure doesn't.

How was the initial setup?

There weren't a lot of challenges with the setup.

I would rate the setup as five out of five.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's expensive. It would be good if AWS and Azure could reduce the computing cost for people who move to the public cloud.

I would rate the pricing as four out of five.

There's not a lot of difference in the pricing of AWS and Azure. AWS is about $1 or $2 higher than Azure. Azure is cheaper when it comes to the computing part. From the partner side, I feel we are getting more benefit when it comes to Azure Cloud.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution as nine out of ten.

When it comes to Azure, if you're already using existing solutions, it's easy to leverage that into a public cloud.

There are challenges with implementing AWS in India, but not Azure.

  • "Provides good performance and regular release of new features."
  • "The AI aspect of SAP S4HANA can be improved."

What is our primary use case?

S4HANA can be used for multiple functions throughout industry from material management to finance and production planning. I'm an SAP technical consultant.

What is most valuable?

The solution provides good performance and SAP is constantly releasing new features.

What needs improvement?

The AI aspect of SAP S4HANA can be improved upon.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using this product for 17 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability has definitely improved over the years. Many customers are migrating to this solution but it requires a change in how business is done, which is too difficult for some companies. Moving involves a lot of digitization, a different GUI.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

Support for SAP is not that simple but AWS provides good service. Complex problems can take some time to solve, but they usually have a quick response time.

How was the initial setup?

This is a complex application so the initial setup is not straightforward and requires planning and expertise. Migration time depends on the size of the landscape and the database. It can take a couple of years in an enterprise environment. The main work is around configuring the solution. Deployment usually requires a team of six to eight people. Managed services or maintenance depends on the size. Our in-house consultants are multi-skilled in both SAP and the cloud.

What other advice do I have?

It's important to plan, prepare, and choose a service partner with adequate experience.

I rate this solution eight out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

Easy to access database to gain insights with AI integrations
Pros and Cons
  • "We deployed the database from another team called ECC into an SAP HANA system. The implementation project took about eighteen months. That team handled the technical aspects."

What is our primary use case?

We were doing a migration from ECC to SAP.

    What is most valuable?

We deployed the database from another team called ECC into an SAP HANA system. The implementation project took about eighteen months. That team handled the technical aspects. My responsibility was configuring the module for the client, ensuring it allowed them to procure materials, make purchases, and process payments.

    What needs improvement?

How SAP S/4HANA on AWS integrates processes with business objectives is highly effective for any business, whether an SMME or a large enterprise. Their integration of business processes is among the best available. The specific integration and functionality depend on the subscription and the client's needs. SAP S/4HANA can meet various standards and client requirements. They offer human capital management, procurement, sales, distribution, and project management solutions. Each business element can be effectively managed through its modules, making SAP S/4HANA on AWS a versatile choice for any business.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using SAP S4HANA on AWS for one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is quite stable once you implement it well. Once you go live with the green light from AWS, they have good technical support for their engineers. You don't have enough capability as a service provider, and you need to call them. They have several great engineers who can assist you and ensure you don't have a failing project.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It improves your profitability. As you have designed AWS, they can assist you in ensuring that you meet your requirements.

How are customer service and support?

Every time we launch a ticket, they respond immediately and assist us with anything we need. I am quite impressed with their technical support.

We use a tool called ServiceNow to log our tickets. AWS responds promptly and closes the tickets efficiently. We then rate them based on their response and our experience. I was part of the team providing feedback on their service.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

    How was the initial setup?

Deployment is quite complex. There is a failure in terms of implementation. You didn't do due diligence to ensure that you fully understood the client's requirements and the capability of the system itself.

What other advice do I have?

The database is quite easy to access, making it straightforward to gain insights into areas that need development in terms of business processes and identifying gaps. It is also essential to understand the skills requirements of your workforce. You need to assess where your SAP skills are lacking and where training is needed.

The integration with AWS helps in understanding business requirements effectively. AWS offers modules such as the Analytical Cloud Module, which can be utilized to identify areas of leakage, track revenue sources, and measure productivity and machine efficiency.

Implementing SAP S4HANA on AWS can be quite expensive, and a proper feasibility study is necessary. However, if you have the financial resources, it significantly assists in improving productivity, scaling your business, and enhancing the profitability and efficiency of your company.

The AI integration is quite perfect. The recent developments we're using include HANA integrated with AI. AWS is emphasizing their analytical cloud, which allows us to draw AWS reports. They also have a Business Warehouse where you can store your information and then analyze it to create useful insights.

Overall, I rate the solution a ten out of ten.

Plenty of configuration, reasonably priced, and helpful paid support
    Pros and Cons
    • "The most valuable feature of SAP S4HANA on AWS is that when developed on a new structured system it can be configured."
    • "If you go to AWS's site they offer training programs that are very good. SAP does not do the same, if SAP could provide some training that would be great."

What is our primary use case?

SAP S4HANA on AWS can be used for managing financials, sales, inventory, quotes, or supply chains.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of SAP S4HANA on AWS is that when developed on a new structured system it can be configured.

    What needs improvement?

Whoever developed the current system that my clients have are no longer available and both engineers have retired, the solution's hardware has become a black box and they don't know how works. They spend an awful lot of time figuring out systems. They should reduce the ID expenditures.

If you go to AWS's site they offer training programs that are very good. SAP does not do the same, if SAP could provide some training that would be great.

There are other solutions that can connect with SAP S4HANA on AWS but there is not a lot of information that is provided on what they can do. If they could provide these details it would be helpful.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using SAP S4HANA on AWS for three months.

How are customer service and support?

SAP S4HANA on AWS, but in general, the response from SAP is not great unless you pay for extra services.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have not used another similar solution to SAP S4HANA on AWS.

    How was the initial setup?

SAP S4HANA on AWS is still difficult to configure. It requires professional help. If the client can do it themselves it would be great. The implementation needs to be a lot easier than it is today, that would be great.

I would rate the complexity of the deployment of SAP S4HANA on AWS a four out of five.

    What about the implementation team?

To implementation SAP S4HANA on AWS it requires professionals. The solution does not require maintenance. However, you need foresight as to what you want to do in the future because once you set it up some things are hard to change. This aspect can be difficult.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of SAP S4HANA on AWS is reasonable, given how much it costs to maintain a scratch-built system. To upgrade the support there is a fee.

What other advice do I have?

I rate SAP S4HANA on AWS a nine out of ten.

It helps you visualize your data in real time and make decisions.
    Pros and Cons
    • "The system has the capacity to manage all these departments in a single box and they're all integrated."
    • "S4HANA is expensive. It costs much more than SuccessFactors."

What is our primary use case?

S4HANA is an analytics suite. It's a cloud-based solution for managing an enterprise. Each enterprise has different departments, like finance, procurement, sales, quality assurance, planning, etc. The system has the capacity to manage all these departments in a single box and they're all integrated.

The purpose of the solution actually is to manage all the organization's activities within your organization on a single platform. For example, when you register a transaction from procurement, the finance part of the system deducts it from the balance sheet. The same thing happens with sales, maintenance, or any other department. It helps you visualize your data in real time and make decisions.

    What is most valuable?

SAP S4HANA is the same regardless of whether you host it on AWS or Azure like water is the same whether it's in a black or white bucket. It's the same solution. But within the solution, you have different models. Each of them is equally important depending on the industry.

For how long have I used the solution?

We first deployed S4HANA for HSDF in 2017. We did OiServe during the lockdown and now we're doing it for NEP.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

S4HANA is a highly stable solution because it's on the cloud. The solution is available 24/7.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

S4HANA on AWS is scalable. We currently have three clients on it: OiServe, HSDM, and NDEP. The others are using on-premise solutions. So I will count those ones.

How are customer service and support?

The support is okay because there's a support structure for that. You need to have first-level support and second-level support from a partner. SAP provides third-level support. SAP also has a platform where the partner can raise the ticket to SAP when there are issues that the partner cannot resolve.

    How was the initial setup?

S4HANA can be complex if your customer makes it complicated. At the same time, it can also be a straightforward solution if you meet a customer who is just willing to use the best practices. It's the same as SuccessFactors. You have standard rapid deployment and tools that SAP provides to deploy S4HANA within a short period. Some clients complicate the entire thing and say, "Well, I want to do this." In those cases, the project can last six months or longer than a year.

Or deployments for HSDF and OSA took six months. We expect to complete MDEP in six months because they have a simple process.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

S4HANA is expensive. It costs much more than SuccessFactors. However, depending on the company, you can also get it at a steep discount. In Nigeria, they're trying to reduce the price because of the exchange rate issues. They're working on that, but generally, the solution is fine. It's an excellent tool.

What other advice do I have?

I rate SAP S4HANA on AWS eight out fo 10. I won't give it a nine because there is still room for improvement.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Scalable, and good for retail businesses
    Pros and Cons
    • "We have found the retail business features to be the most valuable."
    • "I would rate my experience with the initial setup a three out of ten, where one is difficult and ten is easy."

What is our primary use case?

We use SAP S/4HANA for manufacturing, retail, and many other types of businesses.

    What is most valuable?

We have found the retail business features to be the most valuable.

    What needs improvement?

There is room for improvement in terms of stability.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using it for seven years. We use the most up-to-date version.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would rate the scalability an eight out of ten. Around 300 to 700 end users have been using this solution.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is difficult. I would rate my experience with the initial setup a three out of ten, where one is difficult and ten is easy.

It is usually deployed on the cloud, and then it is moved to on-premises.

    The deployment takes two years.

    What about the implementation team?

We are the implementors. We have more than 30 people on our team.

Our team gets hired for the deployment process.  Our team does the maintenance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We use credit plans. I would rate the pricing a seven out of ten. There are additional costs modules-wise; it's needed for modules and any new functions.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Our organization evaluated SAP S/4HANA Cloud, extended edition (EX) before choosing SAP S/4HANA.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I would rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
