Pros and Cons
  • "The interface is easy to use."

What is our primary use case?

I primarily use the solution for my personal needs. I use it for browsing the internet and things like that. It's fairly basic usage.

The initial setup is not difficult. It's pretty straightforward.

I have found the solution to be quite stable.

Technical support has always been helpful.

For security reasons, they should continue to update certain aspects. It would make the solution safer in the long run.

The stability could always be strengthened.

I would prefer it if the solution was cheaper.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution from the beginning - since it launched. It's been many years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I've never faced any issues with stability. For my usage, I have found it to be very reliable. there are no bugs or glitches. it doesn't crash or freeze.

That said, stability could always be a bit better.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I only use the solution on my PC. I have not attempted to scale the product. I wouldn't be able to really determine how scalable it is.

I have no plans to increase usage.

How are customer service and support?

While I haven't contacted technical support for myself, I have for my business, and I have found Microsoft support to be helpful and responsive. I'm satisfied with the level of support I have gotten.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very straightforward. It's not overly complex or difficult.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is a bit expensive, and it would always be preferable if it didn't cost as much as it does.

What other advice do I have?

I'm just a Windows 10 user. I use it on my own personal PC as well as at work.

We are using the latest version of the solution. We use the most up-to-date as we routinely update the product.

The system, as it is right now, is sufficient for my purposes.

I'd recommend the solution to other users and organizations.

At this time, finding that it meets my needs, I would rate the product at a nine out of ten.

Easy to use for everyone, simple installation, but expensive
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of this solution is its ease of use. It is the most used operating system in the world."
  • "The solution can improve by making it more private and allowing users to know what operations are going on in the background code."

What is our primary use case?

Windows 10 can be used for running personal or business applications.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of this solution is its ease of use. It is the most used operating system in the world.

What needs improvement?

The solution can improve by making it more private and allowing users to know what operations are going on in the background code. More transparency is needed. For example, there is a project called Purism which is a Linux operating system that comes in a form of a phone or a laptop. Their focus is transparency, if I wanted to know what exactly is happening on my device, I can always go to the project documentation and take a look for my peace of mind.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Windows 10 for approximately five years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Everyone in my organization is using this solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have never needed to open a ticket with the Microsoft technical team.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used Purism Linux.

How was the initial setup?

The installation is simple and anyone could do it.

What about the implementation team?

We have a team that does the implementation and maintenance of the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution can be expensive for businesses to use Microsoft Windows 10.

What other advice do I have?

I would not recommend Windows 10 personally, but because it is the most used operating system, most employees in an organization would adapt to it quickly. They are familiar with it.

It is good to look at alternatives and evaluate. At the same time never underestimate the effect of rejection that end users can have if you change the technology.

I would advise others using Windows solutions to invest heavily in the security products, they are the most used operating system. That does not make it less secure than other operating systems but it makes it more targeted. When it is more targeted you will have more vulnerabilities and therefore it is really important to focus on the security aspects when it comes to Windows infrastructure.

I rate Windows 10 a seven out of ten.

Windows 10

Microsoft has been closely watching the onslaught of this new ransomware epidemic and added a slew of new features to the second major update of Windows 10 which is called "Creators Update" — Win 10 CU for short — which has been rolling out for a few weeks, consumers first.

Presenting new anti-ransomware protection features added in Win 10 CU, Robert Lefferts, Director of Program Management, Windows Enterprise and Security, said that no Windows 10 customer was affected by the recent WannaCry ransomware outbreak that took place in mid-May and no currently known ransomware strain can infect Windows 10.

From a security perspective, CU is a massive improvement.

The new security features include the following list, apart from a host of non-security-related additions like a 3D version of MS Paint. :-)

  • Click-to-run for Adobe Flash in Edge — Prevents ransomware and other malware from landing on Windows 10 PCs via exploits kits and drive-by downloads.
  • Instant cloud protection via Windows Defender — According to Microsoft, starting with CU, Windows Defender AV can suspend a suspicious file from running and sync with the cloud protection service to further inspect the file.
  • Fast remediation mechanism at detection — Microsoft says it has made great strides to "remediate ransomware infection and limit ransomware activity from minutes to seconds, reducing its damage from hundreds of encrypted files to a few." Microsoft credits this to Windows Defender AV’s behavioral engine, which can aggregate malware behavior across processes and stages.
  • Improved detection for script-based attacks — Microsoft says its Antimalware Scan Interface (AMSI) was modified to intervene during the strategic execution points of JS or VBS script runtimes, two infection vectors often used by ransomware.
  • Wow64 compatibility scanning — In CU, Windows Defender AV added a process-scanning feature that uses the Wow64 compatibility layer, enabling it to better inspect system interactions of 32-bit applications running on 64-bit operating systems.
  • Process tree visualizations — Feature added to Windows Defender ATP, the commercial version of Windows Defender.
  • Artifact searching capabilities — Feature added to Windows Defender ATP.
  • Machine isolation and quarantine — feature added to Windows Defender ATP.
  • Windows Edge browser — better protection against remote code execution attacks.

Overall, your average user will probably not notice the difference.

Overall, it's a good update, but it stands out for its incremental tweaks and behind-the-scenes improvements to matters such as security, updates, and privacy, rather than for spectacular new features.

Obviously, you will not be able to roll this out immediately in your organization, despite the CU security improvements. Implementing CU is likely not a priority if you have just started to deploy Windows 10, and you might jump straight to the next major update, codenamed Redstone 3 which is due later this year.

The update is available to MSDN/TechNet subscribers running the Enterprise, Education, and IoT Core editions. Organizations that have Windows via the Volume License Service Center have been able to get the update since May 1st.

The performance is good and it is stable.

The initial setup is very straightforward. The deployment is fast.

What needs improvement?

The interface could be more user-friendly.

For how long have I used the solution?

While I've used other iterations of Windows for about 15 years, for Windows 10, I have used it for three years.

For deployment, you likely only need one engineer.

Easy to install and use
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is easy to use."
  • "I am not so happy with the performance"

What is our primary use case?

The solution is useful for running one's personal applications.

What is most valuable?

The solution is easy to use. We are very used to using Windows, starting from their 3.1 version. This is the only reason we stick with it.

What needs improvement?

I am not so happy with the performance. All else is good, but the performance could be better.

The user interface could be more interesting, more user-friendly.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

How are customer service and support?

I have not contacted tech support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We only did upgrading. We used Windows 10 prior to Windows 7.

How was the initial setup?

The solution came pre-installed. I have done installations of the earlier versions of Windows. This is easy.

The installation process lasted roughly an hour.

What about the implementation team?

One can do the installation on one's own. My IT background allows me to handle it independently, but I believe this can be done by oneself even without such a background.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution came pre-installed on my computer, so I did not incur a licensing fee.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend the solution to others.

I rate Windows 10 as an eight out of ten.

Stable and easy to use with good performance
Pros and Cons
  • "The initial setup is very straightforward."
  • "We'd always be happier if the enterprise version was a little bit lower in price."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for everything. We just don't use any other version at the moment. For the last four, five years, we are just using this one version, Windows 10.

What is most valuable?

The performance of the solution is good. We have found the product to be stable.

The interface is also good and it is very easy to use.

The initial setup is very straightforward.

What needs improvement?

So far, the solution has been very good. I cannot recall coming across any missing features. There's nothing I would add at this time.

We'd always be happier if the enterprise version was a little bit lower in price.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for four or five years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable and we have found the performance to be very good overall.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have close to 200 people using the solution at this time.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

For the last few years, we haven't used anything but Windows. We upgraded from Windows 7, which is what we used previously.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is pretty straightforward. It's not overly difficult or complex. A user shouldn't struggle to set it up.

In terms of deployment, you do need more people and more time if you have to do it in multiple geographical locations. In our case, we use around 10, and they cover our locations very well.

In terms of maintenance, just to look after the OS and all those things, we have a team of five.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

While we would always prefer a lower cost for licensing the product, for the kind of quality the software system is providing, I cannot complain. You get pretty good value.

What other advice do I have?

I'd rate the solution at a nine out of ten. We've been pretty happy with its capabilities.

I would recommend the solution to other users and organizations.
