Faced challenges with audit trails and seek better user-level monitoring and control
Regarding built-in authorization, monitoring is quite substantial, and versioning systems is also what we are using. With Amazon API Gateway, we utilize a variety of deployment methods and services they provide, so monitoring services are the important parameter in API control from our side, allowing us to see how the APIs behave and how well they pick up the data from their respective sources. Integration with AWS Lambda has been beneficial since we have event controllers that help identify the APIs, which then call the API from the API services. We're managing this with events that are parameterized through API identification, mostly using Python in Lambda, which has inbuilt features to track API lifecycle parameters. The defined parameterized features in Amazon API Gateway help streamline API lifecycle management. Our AWS system admin team sets these configurations for us. The versioning number gets updated as we deploy revised API versions, which gets monitored on the API monitoring services. The cloud engineering team assists us as we are from a solutions development and deployment team. The importance of Amazon API Gateway's global API deployment for our application's performance is significant in terms of scalability and availability. Amazon API Gateway services have been very good, maintaining a 99.99 SLA, providing us confidence in the global deployment level as it is capable of handling various endpoint types, such as database sites and legacy systems.

Secure banking APIs have protected sensitive transactions and support daily compliance monitoring
Tyk offers many valuable features. For the API, the best features include API security such as API key authentication, JWT tokens, barriers, and OIDC. There is rate limiting and throttling to control how many requests a user can make at one time, such as 100 requests per minute or 1000 requests per minute. API gateway routing and load balancing are handled very smoothly, and API analytics and monitoring are comprehensive. Request-response transformations allow us to track customer ID and monitor how many requests can go to the API versioning. Tyk gives Kubernetes and cloud-native support, including Kubernetes, Docker, and AWS, depending on the cloud-native and cloud-based platform. Logging and troubleshooting capabilities are among the best features. In terms of product benefits, Tyk secures the credit card API, protects the payment API, monitors transactions, handles traffic spikes, reduces downtime, troubleshoots with failover, and improves application reliability. Tyk has positively impacted my organization as it is not just an API gateway but has become a critical business platform that helps organizations securely expose, manage, monitor, and scale their APIs in the modern banking domain, fintech, and commercial insurance environments in cloud-native settings. Almost every application communicates through APIs, and Tyk ensures that the API remains secure, scalable, and has high availability.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"In terms of scalability, I haven't encountered any issues with API Gateway. We've significantly increased our traffic from hitting it once or twice a minute to now hitting it ten to fifteen times within a minute. In an hour, we're receiving hundreds of hits. So, it's performing excellently."
"Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."
"From my perspective of ease of use, it is very good."
"API Gateway is out of the box and works well with Amazon products."
"The most valuable feature is it has lots of integration."
"This solution gives you a unified way to have your API accessed."
"The solution is solid, robust, and scalable."
"It is easy for integrations if it is deployed in AWS Services."
"The feature I find most valuable is that this solution allows us to manage our security, I like that it is open-source and that we can expand it in the future, and we also have all the functionalities to manage our APIs."
"The scalability is very good. That was a key factor in the selection, like how it could be pushed to high volume and scalability, which seemed to be very good."
"Tyk is not just an API gateway but has become a critical business platform that helps organizations securely expose, manage, monitor, and scale their APIs in the modern banking domain, fintech, and commercial insurance environments in cloud-native settings."
"Tyk looked like a good product."
"Customer support is excellent, and their support personnel, along with professional services, know the product really well, resulting in a good experience dealing with them."
"The portal for developers that this solution provides has great functionality."
"Tyk is a wonderful API management gateway for maintaining enterprise-grade applications."
"Other than the limitations with the cloud version everything else is fantastic."

Cons

"One of the problems with using this solution is that you have to know a lot about the Amazon ecosystem, in terms of services, to be able to use it."
"The user interface, in general, can be better. The user interface for the entire Amazon cloud can be more friendly. There are some scenarios that are not really easy to manage and configure through the user interface."
"The only real problem is that you have to know a lot about what is outside of the API gateway in order to make the best use of it."
"The way they manage the headers could be improved and made easier."
"Like most Amazon services, and this one's the same, you're expected to effectively do your own support, and any other support is by emails, so it's quite limited."
"Monitoring could be improved."
"There are certain restrictions that cannot be implemented without web access."
"Amazon API Gateway is not as complete as Apigee and needs to be improved by adding more features to become a more robust application."
"In terms of our usage, the main area of concern is that they tend to build enhancements slightly ahead of the considerations for what those enhancements and extensions are. So it could be slightly better communication with the customer base that would be my main issue with them."
"Given the complexity of the solution, comprehensive documentation was essential. I had to invest considerable time locating and understanding the relevant materials, especially since the supplier’s support was limited. Eventually, had to research with external sources and guidance from other users in my network. The UI handles common tasks well and feels intuitive for day‑to‑day operations. However, some advanced configuration options, particularly custom plugins, complex middleware chains, and multi‑region controls, seem to be scattered across different sections. This sometimes makes advanced setups slower and more cumbersome than they need to be. While the product is generally intuitive, advanced configurations can be non-trivial and require significant effort and external knowledge to implement correctly."
"Compared to Apigee or Kong, I find they excel beyond Tyk, which is the reason for my score."
"There are many features in Tyk, but a few things need to be improved from the developer side."
"We would like a better tool for generating documentation for the APIs to be developed."
"There are some architectural bottlenecks, including operational complexity and multi-component overhead."
"We ran it for a while, but then we decided to move away from Tyk, because Tyk's cloud version, the SaaS version, has a significant limitation of limited flexibility, so you can't program very much."
"I chose the number eight because I think at the time I ended up using the version and I had not found, or there was not, a way for me to install it locally to study and learn a way of using the tool."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I rate the tool's price as seven on a scale of one to ten, where one means low price and ten means high price."
"It's cost-effective, even as our workload and the number of APIs we manage have increased."
"Since it's a serverless solution, Amazon API Gateway is not so expensive."
"It is somewhat costly, particularly when it introduces server-related features, which are often scheduled on our end."
"There are no licensing fees."
"This is a pay-per-use service, where you only pay for what you use."
"Azure products are more cost-effective than AWS solutions"
"AWS charges for data ingress and egress, which could be further reduced. This would be helpful for customers dealing with large amounts of data coming in or going out from their systems."
"We are using the open-source version of this product, so there are no licensing costs for its use."
"There are different versions and plans available depending on the requirements, so there is flexibility in terms of the pricing."
"It had a free version, which suited many of our needs, but not all, but we were happy to go ahead with the licensed version as well, which is the paid version."
"The cost curve is far smoother, both in terms of volume and the number of calls it's running on, compared to most competitors. So it's a tad more expensive at the very low end, but the curve is nothing like Apigee or some of the others."
"The price is low compared to other products of a similar type."
