Faced challenges with audit trails and seek better user-level monitoring and control
Regarding built-in authorization, monitoring is quite substantial, and versioning systems is also what we are using. With Amazon API Gateway, we utilize a variety of deployment methods and services they provide, so monitoring services are the important parameter in API control from our side, allowing us to see how the APIs behave and how well they pick up the data from their respective sources. Integration with AWS Lambda has been beneficial since we have event controllers that help identify the APIs, which then call the API from the API services. We're managing this with events that are parameterized through API identification, mostly using Python in Lambda, which has inbuilt features to track API lifecycle parameters. The defined parameterized features in Amazon API Gateway help streamline API lifecycle management. Our AWS system admin team sets these configurations for us. The versioning number gets updated as we deploy revised API versions, which gets monitored on the API monitoring services. The cloud engineering team assists us as we are from a solutions development and deployment team. The importance of Amazon API Gateway's global API deployment for our application's performance is significant in terms of scalability and availability. Amazon API Gateway services have been very good, maintaining a 99.99 SLA, providing us confidence in the global deployment level as it is capable of handling various endpoint types, such as database sites and legacy systems.

Internal API gateway has improved security frameworks and now provides unified API visibility
The best features Tyk offers are highly customizable options, effective traffic management, and security, making it easy to configure and use. The customizability of Tyk is evident in our validation of the token—specifically with our internal identity and access management. There were challenges on the network side and in managing token validity and the public key, but Tyk allowed us to configure these aspects effectively. I believe those are the standard out-of-the-box capabilities provided by Tyk that we are using, particularly regarding traffic management and security. Tyk has positively impacted my organization by providing standard API management capabilities, such as a single view for all APIs, discoverability, and role-based access control for overseeing who can see which APIs.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It's flexible. It was valuable."
"It is very helpful, with our API-based applications."
"Stability is excellent."
"API Gateway is out of the box and works well with Amazon products."
"API Gateway is easy to set up, allows for custom domain assignment and rate limiting based on customer tiers, and works well for defining different states for different customers based on their purchase plans."
"In terms of scalability, I haven't encountered any issues with API Gateway. We've significantly increased our traffic from hitting it once or twice a minute to now hitting it ten to fifteen times within a minute. In an hour, we're receiving hundreds of hits. So, it's performing excellently."
"The Lambda features are very cost-effective since you do not have to run your servers 24/7."
"The initial setup is pretty easy. Deployment only takes five minutes."
"You can set up workflows and write limited pieces of logic."
"The feature I find most valuable is that this solution allows us to manage our security, I like that it is open-source and that we can expand it in the future, and we also have all the functionalities to manage our APIs."
"The most valuable feature is the load balancing with the circuit-breaker function."
"Customer support is excellent, and their support personnel, along with professional services, know the product really well, resulting in a good experience dealing with them."
"The scalability is very good. That was a key factor in the selection, like how it could be pushed to high volume and scalability, which seemed to be very good."
"The portal for developers that this solution provides has great functionality."
"It is a good product for API management."
"Other than the limitations with the cloud version everything else is fantastic."

Cons

"I'm pretty happy with what Amazon API Gateway offers, but as its pricing is on the higher side, that's one area for improvement in the solution."
"One of the problems with using this solution is that you have to know a lot about the Amazon ecosystem, in terms of services, to be able to use it."
"I am not completely satisfied with Technical Support. They were finding it difficult to get to the AWS API gateway."
"It would be useful to have a more complete development environment for the developer, with different integrative capabilities to manage all the life cycles for the API. I think the full version formula for that is really useful. They should improve the development environment for easier integration."
"Monitoring could be improved."
"The user interface, in general, can be better. The user interface for the entire Amazon cloud can be more friendly. There are some scenarios that are not really easy to manage and configure through the user interface."
"It's hard to configure. There's a lot of options but it's very hard, it's very confusing."
"The user interface could be improved, as well as customer support and having a local customer representative in a country."
"Compared to Apigee or Kong, I find they excel beyond Tyk, which is the reason for my score."
"In terms of our usage, the main area of concern is that they tend to build enhancements slightly ahead of the considerations for what those enhancements and extensions are. So it could be slightly better communication with the customer base that would be my main issue with them."
"Sometimes when new features are released, they are not immediately stable."
"We ran it for a while, but then we decided to move away from Tyk, because Tyk's cloud version, the SaaS version, has a significant limitation of limited flexibility, so you can't program very much."
"I would like to see some additional features like having some extensions for .NET core because we use it for our back-end language."
"We would like a better tool for generating documentation for the APIs to be developed."
"It is a young product and does not have the kind of brand recognition that would make it a more popular solution with our clients."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Fees are volume-based."
"The solution is expensive. Though the product was previously available at a cheap rate, nowadays it is expensive."
"I rate the tool's price as seven on a scale of one to ten, where one means low price and ten means high price."
"This is a pay-per-use service, where you only pay for what you use."
"It is somewhat costly, particularly when it introduces server-related features, which are often scheduled on our end."
"The product can be described as a medium-priced solution, but its cost is higher than Azure."
"We use all open-source technology."
"Azure products are more cost-effective than AWS solutions"
"It had a free version, which suited many of our needs, but not all, but we were happy to go ahead with the licensed version as well, which is the paid version."
"We are using the open-source version of this product, so there are no licensing costs for its use."
"The price is low compared to other products of a similar type."
"The cost curve is far smoother, both in terms of volume and the number of calls it's running on, compared to most competitors. So it's a tad more expensive at the very low end, but the curve is nothing like Apigee or some of the others."
"There are different versions and plans available depending on the requirements, so there is flexibility in terms of the pricing."
