Provides diverse tools for effective data management but can improve customer support practices
AWS Storage Gateway is very customer friendly in terms of their features, though perhaps not in price. If there is something that the customer needs to do with moving data from one point to another, they will make sure that is available to customers. At one time they had dozens of migration tools. They make it possible for data to get from anywhere to AWS Cloud, though not necessarily back. They will make it very easy and will do customer engagements to get that data from any legacy device to AWS. AWS Storage Gateway was born of all the cloud blank products, including Snowball, the big mobile unit. All of them were created to get more people to the AWS platform. In the past few years I have worked for data security software companies implementing customer solutions.

Positive impacts seen with improved data security and reliable support
I have six months of experience with the product, and as a consultant, the use cases for NetApp AltaVault mainly stand out for me. Regarding the deduplication feature in the product, I am interested in whether clients are using it. There are different integrations available with NetApp AltaVault, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and I want to understand how they impact data security policies in my case.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution gives us the ability to move large amounts of data to the cloud and it gives us on-premises connectivity, and the storage can be shared from the cloud to on-premise."
"The stability has to be a given; without that, you wouldn't use the product, as it needs to be a reliable solution."
"AWS Storage Gateway's best feature is its secure storage."
"The stability is probably the most valuable aspect of the product."
"Generally, I use AWS Storage Gateway to reduce the cost of the S3 and caching."
"From my perspective, it's better than the traditional way of having a physical server."
"The solution is quite inexpensive, which is its most valuable feature."
"AWS Storage Gateway is used when there's a high requirement for storage and the company has their goal to move to the cloud and they are not comfortable having it in the data centers."
"We're doing AWS S3 with Glacier with cloud-based backup and the integration is good, as it works with Veeam and Commvault."
"The jobs we have baseline into the AltaVault, it seems to be able to recover faster than the previous solution."
"The most valuable feature is the portability of large archived data, as you're able to put things on large on-prem, low-cost storage and then augment that with even lower cost storage in the cloud."
"The solution is very easy to use and it offers great support."
"It's been very helpful for us in our environment and what we do."
"The deduplication engine. Right now, we're at about 10.5 to 11 times deduplication of our backup data."
"Our restore window has been cut by 10 times, from having to pull back from tape - I'd definitely recommend it."
"The interface is great; the GUI is great; it's so easy to work with."

Cons

"It would be better for us if they improved their integration capability."
"We've had issues with bandwidth in the past, and we don't know where the bottlenecks are. We're not sure if it's on the AWS side or with the clients or the configuration in between. There's no visibility."
"AWS Storage Gateway could improve by having different kinds of storage. For example, allowing all kinds of data, whether it's images or structure, not structure data."
"Although we have not used this application long, I am not sure, in its current configuration, that we could scale this solution to meet our needs."
"I would rate it an eight out of ten, not a ten because I cannot say that it's perfect."
"I cannot say it's perfect."
"When we opened a ticket for AWS Storage Gateway, the support team was responsive but could not resolve the issue."
"AWS Storage Gateway's cost can be an issue."
"The initial setup phase of the tool was difficult."
"What could be helpful is different user base authentication so then maybe we could allow different customers to point to a single appliance and they only see the backups and things that they have."
"We have had issues getting to the right person, but once you get to the right person, they are knowledgeable."
"More capacity with the basic model of the AltaVault would probably help out."
"More than a 500 volume limit. At the moment, it only supports up to 500 volumes for SnapMirror and that's a problem."
"The solution needs faster indexing."
"It would be nice if the solution was more complete. Many customers are looking for a single solution or silo that they can manage everything from."
"I really want to partner it with the SnapCenter. We haven't implemented that yet. We're upgrading all of our stuff to the ONTAP 9, which you had to have."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We pay a monthly license."
"There is a monthly subscription for the use of this solution."
"My company needs to get monthly licenses to use the tool."
"Licensing is paid monthly. Pricing is in the mid-range - not too high or too low."
"The solution's price is reasonable."
"AWS Storage Gateway is reasonably priced. The price depends on how much you need. The whole synopse model comes into the picture for the cloud where it depends on how many instances per VM and the price will increase. It's a reasonable price because with all the competition around the price has to be competitive. It's not very costly."
"There is a need to make yearly payments towards the licensing costs attached to the solution, which comes to around 3,000 USD."
"The price is a bit high."
"It's quite cost-effective."
"It is a rather expensive program."
"The pricing is not too bad, but could be a little better."
"In one use case, and we have several, to run for a particular customer, the price is about $375,000 a year."
"You could compare it to a Dell EMC or ECS, and I think it's probably a little less costly than that. Within the marketplace, it's a medium cost."
