Provides diverse tools for effective data management but can improve customer support practices
AWS Storage Gateway is very customer friendly in terms of their features, though perhaps not in price. If there is something that the customer needs to do with moving data from one point to another, they will make sure that is available to customers. At one time they had dozens of migration tools. They make it possible for data to get from anywhere to AWS Cloud, though not necessarily back. They will make it very easy and will do customer engagements to get that data from any legacy device to AWS. AWS Storage Gateway was born of all the cloud blank products, including Snowball, the big mobile unit. All of them were created to get more people to the AWS platform. In the past few years I have worked for data security software companies implementing customer solutions.

Positive impacts seen with improved data security and reliable support
I have six months of experience with the product, and as a consultant, the use cases for NetApp AltaVault mainly stand out for me. Regarding the deduplication feature in the product, I am interested in whether clients are using it. There are different integrations available with NetApp AltaVault, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and I want to understand how they impact data security policies in my case.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The stability has to be a given; without that, you wouldn't use the product, as it needs to be a reliable solution."
"The solution has low latency."
"It's an inexpensive, simple solution that is easily implemented for an existing backup environment."
"The solution gives us the ability to move large amounts of data to the cloud and it gives us on-premises connectivity. Additionally, the storage can be shared from the cloud to on-premise."
"The most effective features are the asynchronous server functionality, which improves latency and stabilization. I also like the distributed data capabilities for data management."
"From my perspective, it's better than the traditional way of having a physical server."
"AWS Storage Gateway has durability."
"The stability is probably the most valuable aspect of the product."
"We are getting rid of our tape libraries, so this is an alternative to that, we don't have to have 100s and 1000s of tapes, and we are going into the cloud, so this helps us go into the cloud while providing better security for backup data."
"The jobs we have baseline into the AltaVault, it seems to be able to recover faster than the previous solution."
"Our restore window has been cut by 10 times, from having to pull back from tape - I'd definitely recommend it."
"The interface is great; the GUI is great; it's so easy to work with."
"The most valuable feature is the portability of large archived data, as you're able to put things on large on-prem, low-cost storage and then augment that with even lower cost storage in the cloud."
"The solution is great for reducing headaches in the IT department."
"It's been very helpful for us in our environment and what we do."
"Being able to move data seamlessly from one-premise to the cloud (Azure). It works great. The backup solution is perfect for us."

Cons

"I cannot say it's perfect."
"We've had issues with bandwidth in the past, and we don't know where the bottlenecks are. We're not sure if it's on the AWS side or with the clients or the configuration in between. There's no visibility."
"AWS Storage Gateway could improve by having different kinds of storage. For example, allowing all kinds of data, whether it's images or structure, not structure data. This would be great."
"A data pipeline tool would be more beneficial for data authentication and DataOps."
"Data migration and collection could be made easier for improvements - there's still work to be done there."
"Its interface could be easier to use."
"Pricing is an area of concern, and it can always be improved no matter what it is."
"It would be better for us if they improved their integration capability."
"NetApp's own competing products complicate things."
"To clarify, the catalog feature is lacking, and you need to depend on somebody else."
"I really want to partner it with the SnapCenter. We haven't implemented that yet. We're upgrading all of our stuff to the ONTAP 9, which you had to have."
"The initial installation is difficult for my clients who have it on both on-premises and on cloud."
"My advice is to stick with ONTAP and ownCloud because NetApp AltaVault is going to die."
"It wasn't as easy as I thought it was going to be. It was actually a complete rebuild, and then migrate the database."
"I would like to see more web support."
"We've had a lot of issues, crashed the service console a lot, service crashes."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"There is a monthly subscription for the use of this solution."
"Licensing is paid monthly. Pricing is in the mid-range - not too high or too low."
"My company needs to get monthly licenses to use the tool."
"AWS Storage Gateway is reasonably priced. The price depends on how much you need. The whole synopse model comes into the picture for the cloud where it depends on how many instances per VM and the price will increase. It's a reasonable price because with all the competition around the price has to be competitive. It's not very costly."
"We pay a monthly license."
"The solution's price is reasonable."
"It's quite cost-effective."
"The price is a bit high."
"It is a rather expensive program."
"The pricing is not too bad, but could be a little better."
"In one use case, and we have several, to run for a particular customer, the price is about $375,000 a year."
"You could compare it to a Dell EMC or ECS, and I think it's probably a little less costly than that. Within the marketplace, it's a medium cost."
"There is a need to make yearly payments towards the licensing costs attached to the solution, which comes to around 3,000 USD."
