Supports long-running asynchronous processes effectively but has not evolved much in recent years
I think Camunda is focusing too much on the SaaS offering right now and not much on improving and developing the product itself. I did not see any innovations on that aspect, especially for the open-source version. I was making some tests recently and the tool seemed pretty much the same as it was three or four years ago. Since they made the move to cloud deployment in a more SaaS-oriented way, they do not invest too much in the community version. To be honest, it did not change much from the Activiti initial version. Activiti was pretty much what Camunda is today. They invested a lot on Zeebe and made it the engine for their SaaS cloud version. Camunda itself, the embedded engine, did not evolve too much. They could invest more on that.

A highly scalable solution that provides various features for the execution of business processes
I'm a consultant. I do architecting, designing, and development. I have used two versions, 1.1 and 2.0. I’m unsure about the prices because I oversee the development and implementation. I'll highly recommend the product depending on an organization’s requirements. As someone who has worked with BPEL for 13 years, I highly recommend the product for an on-premise or hybrid integration. Multiple products or alternate solutions have come into the integration domain. However, the product has been in the industry from SOA 11g to SOA 12c and OIC. Though there are multiple competitors, the product has been here for a long time and has been helping multiple customers improve their business. Overall, I rate the solution a nine or nine and a half out of ten.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It has an open BPM"
"The UI is very user-friendly compared to other products. The native, vanilla UI is very interesting and intuitive to use. It's user-friendly when it comes to modernizing a business process."
"Camunda's support for BPMN 2.0 is a great advantage because it allows us to have a common language to discuss technology and business in the same perspective."
"We like the idea of working with Cawemo because it enables us to keep on working, remotely or not. It allows us to collaborate between areas. It's easy to model and easy to use"
"The visibility – the diagrams you create – and then being able to automate based on them are valuable features. It's easy to explain and comprehend, and the integration aspects are valuable."
"Camunda is a scalable product."
"We are very strongly recommending Camunda BPM; it is good, it is easy, the community is good, and there is a lot of support if you are stuck anywhere."
"We were able to build our rules-based API engine, and it does exactly what we wanted it to."
"The product has everything we need."
"What I find the most valuable about Oracle BPEL is that it saves me time."
"The most valuable feature is the support for human tasks."
"The solution is very seamless and fast."

Cons

"The migration strategy needs to be improved."
"The latency of API could be decreased."
"The product must provide more videos and training materials."
"When trying to design rule tables the solutions graphical user interface could improve, it could be more user friendly."
"The user interface needs improvement; it should be more tailored to the end-user and offer a better user experience design over the user interface itself."
"They have a migration plugin that can be used to migrate from one BPM to another BPM. It is in the beta stage since last year. If they can make it available in the market, it would be great. We are going to have a couple of migration projects for migrating from IBM BPM to Camunda, and this plugin would be useful. I have already discussed this with them two weeks ago and asked them to look into this and add it as a feature. We are expecting this plugin to be available in the next version. This is the only requirement we have at present. They keep on coming up with different features, which is helping us a lot. Its latest release that came out last month was awesome."
"Community support is basically what I'm looking for."
"I do think that Camunda can try to do better when it comes to solving the complexities of all the products in its software stack."
"In the next release, I would like to see REST improved and new technologies for microservices. I'd like to see more containers for separating containers."
"Some user-defined functions for transformation must be added to the next release of the solution."
"The solution's integration with SAP should be seamless because some formats are not accepted in SAP but are accepted in Oracle BPEL."
"They need to have support for new protocols like GraphQL and possibly some out-of-the-box adapters for SAP and other big systems."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Generally, the price could be better, as well as the licensing fees."
"Compared to other software, Camunda Platform is quite cost-effective."
"We use a community version."
"Camunda is much cheaper."
"Camunda has a free service as well as a commercial service. We are using the free service."
"I think Camunda BPM can improve their licensing costs. It isn't easy to find clients with Camunda BPM licenses mainly because it's quite expensive."
"We use the open-source version, which can be used at no cost."
"When compared with the proprietary products, the pricing costs are much less, even though it is an enterprise edition."
"The product is moderately priced."
"The solution's pricing is moderate and not expensive."
