Enhanced data quality and lineage understanding with great support
It is mainly for documentation purposes, to document metadata in a data catalog, and also to improve understanding, access, and exploration of data I've been an external consultant, advising clients on IT solutions and helping them implement these solutions, including Collibra Governance. It's…

The sensitivity and retention options in Purview are excellent
Some of the menu headings may not be easy to understand for some people. For example, when I first used Purview, I noticed that one of the self-compliance centers had changed its name. Microsoft has done a huge amount of updates, and sometimes it's hard to keep track of what Purview can do. We almost constantly have to explore it. Maybe Microsoft could have a 365 roadmap where we can look at upcoming features, or some kind of bulletin announcement for Purview users that explains new features and what they can do in simple terms. We could also look at the menu settings. In my experience of using Purview, we've never used it as an exclusive system for IT professionals or technical staff. We were very keen that other specialists around the business made use of some of these features because we thought that some of what Purview could do was relevant to other departments as well as IT. For example, we have HR managers and financial staff who use it. I think that some of the terminology in Purview is pitched toward IT and tech professionals, and it may not be immediately understood by other specialists. This is something that could be improved.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Workflow is very helpful and assessment are good features. I really like the structure of this solution and how it is compartmentalized."
"Provides a good view of the data and how it's being utilized, as well as calibration quality."
"The beauty of the solution is that you can customize it quite a bit."
"The customization and the dashboards are pretty good."
"It's incredibly easy to use."
"I like the lineage feature the most because I don't think there's any other tool that actually depicts the data flow from multiple sources and the connectivities between every data element inside those sources."
"We have folks in the field doing our clinical research operations, and they have the opportunity to refer to Collibra when they are examining a particular report. When they have a question about how something in that report is derived, they can pull a metric that is defined fully in Collibra. They have the opportunity to drill back into Collibra to see that."
"The most important feature is the ease of use."
"It starts off with records management, insider risk management, and information protection. And there is the discovery of the clouds, and we can get analytics on that as well, so that we know which user is using which cloud application and for how much time. The Activity explorer tells us which user was transferring out what data at what moment and on which device, including the serial number."
"The most significant value lies in its seamless integration into the Azure ecosystem, automating various processes and reducing operational burdens."
"The data protection feature is vital as it controls who can access data when it moves out of our protected boundary."
"It gives you the opportunity to know your data and apply policies around it. If those policies are flouted, you can always track what's happening. You have options such as alerting the person who is committing that action, or you can take automatic action by blocking, for example, an email that is been sent externally. It's very useful."
"The custom classifications are one of the most valuable features."
"Purview helped us automate and control our data without having to rely on people to manually tag documents with specific retention periods."
"Microsoft Purview is scalable."
"MIP also provides strong information rights management settings, such as the ability to specify who has access to content and at what time."

Cons

"There should be more detailed documentation on the selectors and certain information, and a reduction in cost as compared to other tools."
"The solution's data lineage is a little difficult and will not support all the source systems on the database."
"There's a lot of things available in their Data Intelligence Cloud that are not available on-premise."
"The connectors are not very sophisticated. They can do, for example, Informatica and Tableau, but the connectors themselves could be improved."
"It should have more integrations with things like CyberArk because its main purpose is GDPR implementation. We have to have more scope for things that implement more privacy. CyberArk makes sure your credentials are vaulted and your things are secure when you're creating your integrations or connecting to an application. I do believe that they are working on this feature."
"The workflows and the language they use needs to be improved."
"The interface is not very user-friendly and can be difficult to navigate."
"There are a lot of gaps in Collibra's support and documentation."
"I would like to have AI functionality on the dashboard to help me analyze and report on the data that we capture using Purview on a daily basis."
"There are some limitations with regard to the lineage of data from different parts of the system."
"Privacy features should be integrated into the core product rather than offered as optional add-ons, as privacy is not a luxury but a fundamental requirement."
"Two features are unsupported—custom insights and the DLP component—that would be beneficial to me as a consultant and for the customer in terms of security and monitoring. Regarding security, DLP would provide a more granular level of data masking. Custom insights would offer more detailed monitoring and alerts that can notify customers of failures or anything requiring urgent action."
"It supports only a limited number of tools and technologies that pertain to Microsoft products. If you want to leverage other solutions such as Workday or Oracle Fusion, features will be coming up, but as of now, it is for the Microsoft suite."
"While Microsoft Purview currently allows weekly scans for data sources, this limitation hinders the usefulness of the tool for frequently changing data."
"There is room for improvement when it comes to Purview's data connector platform in supporting ingestion from non-Microsoft data sources."
"he one thing it doesn't do is data quality."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Generally, it is a rather expensive solution compared to some other tools in the market, but I found it to be fair-priced for its capabilities."
"We purchase its annual license. There is an extra cost for additional users."
"I think they have a trust issue. I did not like the way they recently went through the process. They were like, "Finish this SOW first, only then will we sign the other SOW." Or, "Finish this code." I didn't like that much."
"There are different levels of licenses. For example, some users can only do read-only licenses, and others have the stewardship license where they can give access to users."
"The solution's pricing is moderate and not very expensive."
"Collibra Governance is an expensive solution."
"I rate the pricing a three on a scale of one to ten, where one is expensive, and ten is cheap."
"It is substantial, and we do pay yearly."
"I consider it cost-efficient because of the metrics it provides."
"Microsoft Purview has a pay-per-use pricing model, so it's one of the most cost-effective tools, as your cost will be based on your usage. It's a pricing model that Microsoft has nailed down, making it great whether you're a small organization or a multinational, giant organization."
"To get the full features of Purview, we currently need E5 enterprise licenses, which are expensive."
"Some people find the tier licensing system complicated, but it offers a lot of value for money if we use the features."
"Microsoft Purview is expensive."
"Currently, the licensing differs for the governance side compared to the risk and compliance side."
"Microsoft Purview is priced in the middle. It isn't the cheapest, but it isn't the most expensive. It's affordable compared to other public cloud services."
"People often and unjustly say that Microsoft product pricing is not in the scope of reality, that it's just too expensive at times. I do not feel that is the case at all... If I'm able to let go of 30 to 70 percent of my IT administration staff, that makes up for a lot of money."
