Have supported critical environments despite room for improvement in legacy backup options
It is very efficient in cyber resilience. Deduplication, automation, and everything is very efficient. It is multi-cloud enabled and has broad protections. The software delivers flexible and efficient backup and recovery options through its cyber resiliency features. Dell PowerProtect Manager provides insights in managing backup processes. Its encryption mechanisms are very efficient, helping to secure sensitive data. Its integration with Dell EMC Data Domain is very good. It is easy to integrate with Data Domain. Multi-cloud options are enabled, and backup in cloud options exist in Dell Avamar.

Easy to use and mange with reasonable pricing
The main feature is a specific file type. If we want some PDF files just to back up, the prefix is very easy, and we do everything in Veeam backup. It's straightforward to set up. It's stable. The solution is easy to use. You can centrally manage it. It's potentially free to use.

"User-friendly data backup and protection solution for a Windows environment. The Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows is very scalable, stable, and has good compatibility and integration."
"Technical support is good. They're very responsive. It depends on the timezone responding, but I usually get a response within three hours of creating a ticket."
"The solution is very stable."
"Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows's most useful features is the ease of use and user-friendly."
"The solution has a replication feature that allows us to do the VR, and it's very good, and the user interface is good and provides a lot of information."
"We are saving a lot of money on costs right now since we have implemented the solution and we are using the community version."
"This is a reliable system that supports Veeam backup and recovery for Windows."

Cons

"Its ability to back up very large objects can be improved. In terms of new features, they can include the ability to use cloud services, like S3, more natively."
"Dell hasn't done a good job at handling these upgrades, or the way EMC used to handle them."
"For entry-level companies, I would say it's a six, or perhaps even lower, like a four, because the price point is very high compared to other companies."
"Setup and deployment of Dell EMC Avamar is complex. It requires expert engineers."
"Dell EMC Avamar is hard to manage because of the support. It’s very difficult to get support."
"The management of this solution is a little bit difficult for IT administrators. They have to be trained before going through the system."
"They should really move to cloud and reduce the price."
"Stability has improved since we first started using it, but it still has a ways to go."
"If they could let you can do replication to physical servers - a backup from physical servers and a replication to physical servers - that will be better."
"There really are no cons. The product simply has to maintain development to keep up with changes in the operating system."
"A feature I would like to see is universal restore."
"I can't think of anything that may be missing."
"We went from a 30 second RTO to a 2-3 hour RTO."
"I would like to see the ability for incremental backups and reverse backups."
"The scalability is not very good - especially when I want to backup Microsoft Windows."
"The solution's compression ratio and high speed for backing up can always improve. Aspects that need improvement are less time, better quality, higher security, and more compression. These are continuous requirements for any customer."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"This solution is less expensive than Veeam for us, although it depends on the customer because we get a great discount."
"The current pricing is generally satisfactory."
"Its licensing is weird. It is not just the licenses; we also purchase hardware. With most software products, such as Veeam, Commvault, and Data Protector, there is no hardware purchase at the same time. Because Avamar and Data Domain are tied together, they have an integrated pipe. You can separate them, but basically, they're designed to work as a couple. Because the Data Domain backend is designed to do dedupe and compression, we get 60:1. When you count it, you count it as a straight compression, but of course, that's with dedupe and some other stuff. You have to buy the hardware, the licensing, and the software at the same time. So, it's not just software."
"Its price should be reduced. It would be good if you could pay as per usage, and there is a subscription model like VMware. There should be some flexibility because sometimes, the customer only uses the backup for one month or three months. Currently, I have to pay whether I use it or not. Its licensing should be flexible and based on consumption."
"Dell's pricing structure is not overly expensive."
"Dell Avamar, including its virtual add-ons and cloud-based offerings, is cheaper than other solutions, but in the end, the price still depends on your use case. Price-wise, I'm rating Dell Avamar as six out of ten."
"The cost is high."
"It is expensive. The maintenance comes with it for five years. So, you buy the whole thing for five years, and your maintenance is included with it, but it's a big chunk of change upfront. We like capital expenses because we can CapEx them. We pay once every five years, so we spend a big chunk of change. You'd have to divide that out by the five years to come up with how much it costs. It's just about three-quarters of a million dollars for five years."
"The solution is inexpensive, more so than other products."
"The licensing fees are billed on a yearly basis, and the fees are much lower than what I pay for NetBackup."
"There are costs in addition to the standard licensing fees, and pricing can be a disadvantage or a weakness for this solution."
"We have an annual license."
"We have a cloud provider agreement with Veeam. We are also paying for the agent."
"We pay for a three-year subscription to use Veeam Agent."
"It is less expensive than one of its variants."
"We have the Community Edition and I believe we bought a license for 200 instances. Veeam Agent is mainly used for our branch offices. Those only have one or two Hyper-V servers, so it's covered with the Community Edition. Basically, it's free. I remember Veeam 7.0 or 8.0 wasn't free, but the Community Edition is."
