Has a deployment phase that is straightforward but needs improvement in the area of scalability
The main issue with HPE SimpliVity is that you are very attached to VMware or VMware dependencies because the tool works with VMware technology. HPE SimpliVity is an add-on from VMware. Nowadays, my company has a lot of concerns about VMware's licensing policy. Another big concern of the tool is related to security because one has to continuously update patch vulnerabilities that are appearing continuously in VMware's different versions. Actually, the foundation of all the architecture is VMware and that is one of the main issues with the tool. My company is analyzing our virtual infrastructure strategy to see if we can move to Nutanix because maybe it may work better and might have another approach. Nutanix is absolutely independent of VMware. I could add that since HPE SimpliVity is very precisely dependent on VMware, it is not open to containers unlike Nutanix, for example. The aforementioned area is a concern that needs to be resolved by HPE.

Offers extensive automation capabilities, ransomware remediation and sensitive data discovery are better than other solutions
Rubrik is an important tool for data recovery in case of a ransomware attack. It's a crucial part of their overall venture, as data recovery would be difficult without it. The guarantee of data restoration in a crisis is the main benefit. It's a combination of all features that offer value, like ransomware remediation and sensitive data discovery, that are better than other solutions. Rubrik is emerging with its AI capabilities. Rubrik's AI companion is called Ruby which is very useful.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"SimpliVity has provided our organization with a cost effective DR/data protection solution."
"It is just a one-stop shop, a single appliance that I can control through my virtual center."
"It has been performing well. It was more than what we expected."
"The most valuable features of this solution are the backup rate and the backup transfer."
"The replication from the different centers (the main to the secondary) has been very great. It is good value for us."
"It's much more simple than Nutanix and other hyper-converged solutions, at least from our point of view."
"I have saved time and money by moving to the platform."
"It's very simple to manage. It has reduced the footprint in the datacenters quite a lot."
"Adaptative backup and SLAs simply allow you to tell a machine to backup without taking care of the backup window."
"I think the best feature is its masterless architecture."
"The Live Mount feature is excellent; it's useful for the backup administrator and end user."
"Also, the web interface is really great. The design, from a user-experience standpoint, is really straightforward and easy to use... they nailed it. Usually, from the very first panel, the dashboard that you land on after login, you've got most of your functionality right around where you need it to be. You've got your new items on the left, you've got your support on the top right. Nothing really seems out of place or just stuck in someplace."
"Takes me 80 percent less time to manage my backup environment."
"What I like about Rubrik is its strong focus on security, particularly in combating ransomware threats."
"The search functionality is second to none as the speed of the search is fast across the whole system and predictive."
"They have a great PowerShell module and easy mediums to speak to the people who create and enhance them."

Cons

"We definitely want to see more of the CLI commands come up to the GUI, and it is a legitimate question, if we are going to be happy with the integration in the vsphere web client, which is awfully slow."
"SimpliVity has little to no integrations."
"HPE SimpliVity should cost less."
"I can say that the support was better when it was a separate company, when it was SimpliVity. But, now with HPE it has not been quite as good. B"
"There is a file size limitation when you want to do an individual file restore, but they might have resolved this in newer versions. As I'm taking backups at the VM server level, I can restore a file from any one of those without standing up the VM, and I can restore it to any mounted VM that I want. The problem is that there is a file size limitation. It becomes problematic when I'm trying to restore. When I want to restore a backup of a SQL database, my backups are considerably larger than 10 gigs. So, the only way to restore that backup file is to mount the entire VM somewhere and then copy it, which doesn't take long at all."
"They can bring more awareness about this product. In this part of the world or this region, people normally don't know about SimpliVity and its capabilities. The company we have it sold to hasn't been able to fully utilize all the features or understand the features. So, product awareness should be improved."
"Not a lean architecture in terms of anything."
"The price is quite high. The system could also be more scalable."
"I would like to see Rubrik better integrate with Microsoft Active Directory. Instead of just backing up a full domain controller, I would like the solution to have Active Directory object knowledge so we can restore specific objects in Active Directory versus restoring the whole domain controller."
"There are some features to improve on in Rubrik. For instance, they should have a tool where we can integrate with our SAP HANA. Directly from the HANA studio, we should be able to do a backup. That's what I'm looking forward to in the future."
"The customer service and support could be a bit faster."
"Better integration for complex NAS structures having to mount at root adds time and workload to the process of NDMP."
"If there was something that we could get Rubrik to fix, it would be when our DBS takes snapshots of a server or the database, the replication doesn't kick off fast enough. They can't remote it to the peer site and manipulate it back up in order to move it over, take a copy of production, slap it over, and test it out. As I understand, they are working on it. Replication works. We also get spoiled by how good things are now. We get to a point where it is so easy but when something isn't instant gratification, it seems that everything else is so amazing, why isn't this right?"
"Capacity reports could definitely be improved. It's hard to determine what is using the space and why. For instance, you can see that some host is using 2 TB on the Rubrik node and the disk space on that host is 400 GBs. It's hard to explain how there can be 2 TBs of data on local storage when nothing has changed on the host for the past three days."
"There could be better reporting and better filtering."
"Could be improved from an analytics point of view."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing is very high."
"Licensing costs are on a monthly basis. There are additional costs."
"The only thing that I think we are paying for is the VMware licenses, but we are enterprise, so it is not horrible."
"The product is expensive."
"If we compare the price of HPE SimpliVity with other vendors that are selling the hyper-converged infrastructure, all of them are not cheap and are priced similarly. However, the price we pay and what we receive makes it a good price."
"We're paying $3,000-$4,000 a month."
"This solution, while costly as all these solutions are, was in fact less expensive than upgrading my old SAN."
"The solution can be expensive if you are using a lot of nodes."
"We pay annually for the license for Rubrik. There are no additional costs. Initially, we needed to set it up, negotiate and finalize the offer."
"We do perpetual licensing... It was all based on the amount of storage we needed to use. We did a cost analysis compared to Tivoli and it was in line with other solutions."
"We pay yearly and it's based on the number of bricks."
"I don't remember the cost, but I know that for Veeam, we were spending almost $250,000 a year for 205 licenses. It was an enterprise version. When we purchased Rubrik, it was just a little bit more. It was not a terribly huge amount, and if I recall, that was for three years of support as well. So, Veeam priced itself out of the market at a certain point in time."
"The solution is expensive for small businesses."
"As a technical person, I don't have the details, but from what I have heard, it can be expensive."
"Rubrik is a little bit expensive, but it's worth the price."
"Rubrik is fairly priced."
