Easy to use, works well in the Microsoft Windows ecosystem, and integrates well with Git
Efficiency is the main focus. Since Visual Studio's inception, it has been a race of constant improvements and attempts to improve the efficiency of the tool in every release. However, crashes and freezes are common when you work with the tool for a long time. The problems get worse when you have more than one project under development and then you need a very powerful computer to be able to perform complex developments. Even having a very powerful computer, as in my case, does not prevent you from having freezes from time to time. Long installation or upgrade times are sometimes a problem.

It has higher quality code, faster debugging, and higher quality projects
* Stability is sometimes lacking in updates. * Search/replace across multiple files is not ideal. * The debugger often has problems determining where to map files to local projects, as well as setting breakpoints, which often are ignored depending on your configuration. * The product requires a subscription to Zend Server Developer, which used to be free and now has an annual fee, but it is still worth the money.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable features of Microsoft Visual Studio are the database connections."
"It's a very easy-to-use product."
"I like the IDE or the integrated development environment. It's the best IDE."
"You can use the solution to do coding and drag and drop. It is easy to install with web documentation."
"The feature I find most valuable is the fact that it's broad-spectrum, so it can be used for a wide variety of technologies."
"The valuable feature is that it provides a basic template for everything and built-in debugging tools. They definitely save me time."
"Microsoft Visual Studio's most valuable features are usability. It's an integrated development environment, they have a lot of built-in tools that will be helpful for a new developer to quickly develop their applications, such as mobile applications or web applications."
"This solution can integrate with almost any functionality offered by Microsoft."
"It has higher quality code, faster debugging, and higher quality projects."
"It has the ability to jump to any file in your project with a few keystrokes, as well as the ability to command-click on any token in your code and have it jump to the token's definition."

Cons

"What I don't like about Microsoft Visual Studio is its user interface. It could be better. WebStorm is a better solution for me as it has a good user interface and is more user-friendly, though my friends like Microsoft Visual Studio. I worked with WebStorm for the web layer, and for the server layer, I worked with IBM Eclipse which is my favorite software. I also dealt with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS through Angular."
"Microsoft Visual Studio needs to improve integration."
"I would like to see Visual Studio improve reporting to give us more details on failures. When there are failures, it's difficult to debug. It would be helpful to have more error information to help us to identify the issue and resolve it. I want to know more about software failures and exceptions in the system."
"I would not recommend it for complex tasks."
"We'd like the solution to be more secure."
"Microsoft Visual Studio can improve by bringing back designers. They used to have designers for architecture charts and diagrams. They were able to do things, such as database design. If they can bring them back, it would be great."
"The product could be improved by including axle intelligence."
"Could be improved with the ability to personalize the interface and development style and to edit extension requirements."
"The debugger often has problems determining where to map files to local projects."
"Stability is sometimes lacking in updates."
"Most recent set of patches (2018) on Mac OS X caused the app to crash when you would cut more than 10 lines of code. Apparently, this was due to a bug in Eclipse, but regardless, it took several months for Zend to post a patch."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The development license for Microsoft Visual Studio is free. I don't know if there's a licensing cost to it."
"Microsoft Visual Studio is a free product."
"While the enterprise version can be relatively expensive due to its comprehensive features, I find the license I currently possess to be reasonable, considering it includes the full suite without additional activations or charges."
"I'm using the platform's open-source version."
"The price of Microsoft Visual Studio is approximately $400 annually."
"There's a community edition that is absolutely free to use. It's pretty good."
"You may have to purchase more hardware utilities like processors or RAM."
"We have an enterprise-level license. The cost is expensive for small to medium-sized organizations."
"The product requires a subscription to Zend Server Developer, which used to be free and now has an annual fee, but it is still worth the money."
"Licensing is reasonable for this type of tool. Although, you can cobble together a solution which is zero cost."
