Significantly improved the organization by providing reliable support and straightforward configuration procedures
StorMagic SvSAN is more user-friendly than other software-defined virtual SAN solutions, especially for smaller businesses. It is capable of working on any hardware, making it cost-effective. StorMagic SvSAN allows the use of any storage type. The Witness feature, which can handle over 1,000 clusters, is helpful for our clients. StorMagic SvSAN offers a distinct advantage over its competitors by including the stretch cluster feature. This functionality, not commonly found in rival products at cost, enhances data availability and disaster recovery capabilities. It is not difficult to administer all of our storage clusters using Edge control. StorMagic SvSAN is the right management tool for StorMagic and enterprise customers, providing a cost-effective solution. It reduces downtime by about 40 percent. StorMagic SvSAN offers cost savings compared to other software-defined virtual SAN solutions. It has significantly improved the organization by providing reliable support and straightforward configuration procedures, benefiting both my enterprise and SMB customers. StorMagic SvSAN is a hyperconverged, high-availability solution with enterprise-grade functionality. Its vendor—and hardware-agnostic design makes it a cost-effective choice for businesses seeking high availability.

Expensive solution that requires professional services for installation and implementation
I'm still using a different solution. I only took two servers with vSAN to support one application that needs one feature that only VMware has. If not for that feature, I wouldn't touch VMware. Now, I'm looking at products like Nutanix, Silver Peak, Flexione, and FortiGate. For products that I choose, I don't need a specialist of that vendor. In VMware, I need a specialist in VMware. That's the issue I have with VMware. It's not like I can take any IT person, and they will know what to do. I need to make sure he will do the call, get the certificate and time to practice.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It gives zero downtime and it works with two nodes rather than three nodes, unlike other solutions."
"StorMagic SvSAN reduced downtime in our environment by 50 percent."
"StorMagic SvSAN is a highly reliable option for customers with enterprise needs and tight budgets."
"The most valuable feature of StorMagic SvSAN is its high availability. We have not had any downtime or data loss. Business continuity is highly important."
"The solution is cost-effective and user-friendly."
"It helps us prevent any data loss while working with the failover clusters."
"StorMagic SvSAN has significantly reduced our downtime."
"StorMagic SvSAN offers cost savings compared to other software-defined virtual SAN solutions."
"The most valuable feature of VMware vSAN is you do not have to use additional hardware for storage. The operation of VMware vSAN does not take a lot of effort. If you have VMware technology on your site, then it's easy for the operational support of the system."
"We have found the solution to be very scalable."
"It's completely hyper-converged, so it's very convenient."
"It's easy to use."
"VMware vSAN's most valuable features are the capability to consolidate standalone physical infrastructure into virtualization and the ease of management."
"Flexibility, growth, and expansion are probably the more important features for us. As our environment grows, the more users come on, the more VDI workstations that we need, we can easily expand either horizontally or vertically with the environment"
"The solution's unified administration is its most valuable aspect."
"The feature we have found most valuable is the compatibility of VMware products with VCF and VMware Cloud Foundation."

Cons

"The StorMagic console needs embedded monitoring capabilities to improve interoperability with other platforms. While StorMagic offers open APIs, direct integration with popular monitoring tools like GearOps or Grafana is lacking."
"StorMagic does not have extensive scalability capabilities as it is tailored for SMBs. If catering to a bigger enterprise customer, scalability might be a concern."
"I would like to see improvements in the virtual networking module as it is not straightforward and sometimes time-consuming. When you are trying to create and configure your virtual networking directly from their GUI, it is not straightforward, and sometimes, it takes a long time to finish the command."
"While StorMagic SvSAN performs well, its scalability regarding CPU and server expansion needs improvement."
"In terms of what could be improved in StorMagic SvSAN, I don't have a major issue with it, but its user interface should be more customer-oriented."
"The StorMagic console needs embedded monitoring capabilities to improve interoperability with other platforms."
"Expanding beyond two nodes significantly increases licensing costs, potentially discouraging clients from growing their infrastructure."
"There are two features missing: there's no REST API functionality, and there is no date duplication in it."
"Hackers are able to manage to leak information or data from the product using some corrupt files, making it an area of major concern where improvements are required."
"vSAN itself is a great storage platform, but one of the issues with it is that you have to be fully locked into the VMware package to use it. We're going to be deploying 72 Kubernetes nodes, and we're not going to buy VMware licenses for 72 of them, just so they can access vSAN. That's what we're using the Pure for. Opening it up so you could have vSAN as a data store, use it as a data lake, hit it with an NFS, S3 from outside the VMware ecosystem, would be great."
"The technical support, it's not satisfactory. Whenever we raise a ticket it takes a lot of time to have an engineer get involved sometimes, or we receive a less experienced engineer. We then have to repeat the situation to the next engineer which all takes time."
"I see room for improvement for vSAN just around general hardware compatibility and expanding that sort of matrix."
"In a future release, they can bring in the object storage capabilities to this solution. Currently, there is not any compatibility."
"I would like to be able to limit IOPS."
"We have encountered some challenges related to administrative tasks and licensing issues for the product."
"The solution functions as the marketing says, as long as you follow certain rules."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"StorMagic's pricing model is fair, allowing payment based on actual use."
"StorMagic SvSAN provided substantial savings."
"While not the cheapest option, it offers comparable functionality for 20 to 30 percent lower than its competitors."
"The pricing for StorMagic is okay, but as a distributor, I suggest some reduction."
"70% cheaper than competitors and provides all the enterprise feature requirements at low cost."
"The product has good pricing."
"The pricing of StorMagic SvSAN is fairly good because if you compare it with VMware, it's at a better price. This is an important thing to remember."
"I would rate the cost a one out of ten with ten being the most costly."
"The cost is expensive. I purchased two servers. The hardware cost was $19,000. The software cost for these two servers, including the vSAN, was $30,000, which is $11,000 more than the hardware. Then I had to pay another $5,000 for installation and implementation for professional services. In total, it was $54,000 for two vSAN Servers."
"It is expensive, but you get what you pay for."
"With vSAN, we didn't find the market that competitive."
"This is a cost-effective product. It's a bit cheaper than the other solutions."
"We did consider other hyperconverged solutions. It usually came down to price. vSan was the most cost effective thing."
"The licenses are very expensive. The renewal of licenses has extra costs attached to it."
"The licensing cost is high and should be taken into account."
"We pay for a license to use the solution through our company CapEx and then we continue to pay annually."
